Personality
From a distance Alkaid is a refined, serious woman. Often found deep in thought, she spends much of her time absorbing ideas and information, living in a realm of theory and possibility. She spends much of her time seeking a higher level of understanding, with many of her observations regarding others being driven by a desire to “pick at their brain a little.”
Contrary to appearance, however, she is more at home in a rowdy, fun-loving atmosphere. No stranger to a drink or three, she can be quite playful. She takes no small amount of pleasure in the teasing of others, and is quick to pick up and dish out dry humor when done in good taste. She is careful and observant regarding others’ feelings, incredibly aware that while that everything is “just a game” that she is still interacting with actual people. Well, usually. A much more guarded person in real life, she is more likely to let such strangers in than many of her personal acquaintances.
Of course that isn’t to say Alkaid completely disregards the “it’s just a game” notion. Feeling free to express herself – both the good and the bad – she can also be lazy, childish, and manipulative. She can also be quite fierce in a heated moment, more commonly combat, and shows a little too much enjoyment in a DPS role, although she won’t get so into it that she’d neglect any support she can provide to make a more efficient team.
In short, Alkaid is a woman full of contradictions. Mature and immature, introverted and extroverted. Like many people she lives on a spectrum, but hers oscillates often.
Positive: Thoughtful, Nurturing, Friendly
Negative: Stubborn, Escapist, Self-doubting
Biography
Kyouko was always a sharp kid, albeit not quite a high achiever as she could have been. In school she’d usually set out to complete whatever routine, monotonous assignment she was given as quickly and efficiently as possible to get a high grade and then scamper off to the not-mundane-and-boring realm of her imagination. Far from a genius, and certainly no prodigy, she’d always been satisfied by meeting the bar set by her parents, who awarded her with whatever she asked for so long as she was successful.
And so she was well-behaved, did well in school, made a few close friends, fought with friends she’d grown apart from – the usual for most children.
She was a good girl. And so she’d listened when her father told her everything would be okay with her mother after their arguments grew more fierce. It wouldn’t be until she was halfway middle school that she reported to officials that her mother was physically abusing her father, and that while she hadn’t been hit herself, verbal lashings were common. Not long after she and her father moved to a new home, although most nights it would just be Kyouko and the company of whatever TV show, video game, or book had caught her interest while her father was busy with work.
Regardless, life would move on, and so they had to, too. Kyouko’s early years of high school were rough, no thanks to certain attention her male “friends” became more expressive over, or worse, spats over said attention – which, at the time, she simply didn’t care for very much. Her grades slipped a bit when she started her first job, but she still managed to get into a good university and eventually move into the tech industry.
Cut to her late-twenties, and her father had remarried a woman who had a son of her own close to high school age, she'd ended up talking to her mother a few times, had her first boyfriend in university, a break-up with said boyfriend, a slew of bad habits picked up, and eventually a promotion on the way. Oh, and her own place. That one sucked at first, but on the other hand, no one could tell her she couldn’t have ice cream after a bad day at work other than her scale, which was plenty fine because “one of these days that lying piece was going to be thrown out a window.”
Which, in it's own way, leads to how she found out about Terrasphere. Since drinking, one of her aforementioned bad habits, gives a little extra in the weight department - among others - Kyouko was open to the idea of checking out gaming rumors and trends. And as if watched by Big Brother himself, she'd received a mysterious invitation to play a game she'd thought was merely a rumor. Naturally, she downloaded it expecting something of the usual MMO experience: love it at first, then the usual spiral where the only reason you're around is because of the friends you'd made. Of course, with the details and pleasures to be had in a virtual world, well, perhaps it might just capture that bit of imagination left from when she used to sit in class...
