Personality
A very laid-back, casual person, Desiree speaks to people like she’s known them her whole lives and just never paid them much attention. She’s generally a very relaxed person and very accepting of even the most dire situations, though some good-natured griping is usually in order. Getting bad news provokes a “That sounds about right” reaction and good news is more like a “Huh. Go figure!” She’s very even-tempered and accepting, seldom judging others on their appearance and putting firm stock in their actions instead. She has a wry, dry sort of demeanor and clearly doesn’t mind what others think about her, even if she comes across as sloppy. Because of this, she almost never gives out information about herself. She might not seem like a reliable person, but the absolute opposite is true—while Des does her very best to avoid responsibility, the truth is that when she commits, she’ll follow through with it to the ends of the earth. Literally. Ask her to do something, she’s yours. That doesn’t mean she’ll like it, but hell—she’ll do it.
Desiree has a quirky sense of humor somewhere on a spectrum between “deadpan” and “ridiculous.” Puns, wordplay, and general weirdness seems to delight and amuse her, though she tends to play it off in a dismissive manner. She’s sort of a loner and seldom joins up with other players for groups or large quests and events, though she doesn’t mind talking to people one bit and is definitely the accommodating sort. Des mostly takes her enjoyment in large-scale travel, one-on-one interactions, and cleaning up some mess or another when one turns up in her path. Her game isn’t set to auto, so she tries to avoid trouble/death/heavy combat when she can. She’s a firm believer in taking care of things herself. One downside is that since her character is significantly taller than herself, she tends to stumble or act clumsily in her new body, which never fails to annoy her. She has little shame or personal discomfort and can unknowingly invade others’ comfort zones at times.
Positive: Relaxed, Accepting, Humorous, Reliable, Capable, Helpful
Negative: Unmotivated, Clumsy, Loner, Secretive, Shameless, Can’t Say No
Biography
Desiree is biracial and was raised by her Chinese father and his family in the southern United States, her mother cutting ties when she was born. She grew up with high expectations from her family and was a devoted student before her teenage years, when her father began to suspect she was dating her close friend Russell Mendez. His attempts to separate the two of them enraged her and she dropped out of school, leaving home with Russell. The two were roommates for the next four years, in which she worked several minimum-wage jobs in various industries—food service, sales, street musician. She took the test to get her GED at nineteen and began an apprenticeship preparing her for veterinary school. Russell left to attend flight school and Des continued her studies of veterinary science. She progressed well in the discipline and gained a wide variety of biological, anatomical, and medical knowledge about domestic animals. She was chosen to attend a field study about wild animals as well over the next year and spent it with her teacher in Ontario, Canada, banding wild birds and studying the various populations in the area.
Returning back home, money became a serious problem for Desiree. She’d fallen into debt with bank and education loans and debt collectors were practically banging down her door. She dropped out of vet school, unable to afford it, and was prepared to live on the streets until Russell contacted her about a job he’d gotten in Canada as a helicopter pilot for wolf and big game hunts. Des took the opening—she left the country with Russell, fleeing her debt, and found work again in a small town back in Ontario. Her knowledge of the local populations and terrain landed her a job as a part-time tour guide. She was often assisting hunters, but on occasion she’d get to help out with a field study, or guide hikers on little-known trails, or birdwatchers seeking a rare migratory sight. While the cash only came and went per job, it was enough to scrape by, and she continued assisting local game wardens and rangers in the area. She wasn’t exactly a vet, but more than one time she had a local family banging down her door in the middle of night for help with a sick pet or another, and sometimes they brought her a dinner in thanks. It was a good deal.
Russell still went back and forth, but they had the chance once or twice a year to work together for air hunts chasing big game from the helicopter. As a permanent legal resident and citizen, he always joked that they could get married if the Canadian government ever found out she was an illegal alien and she got deported, which always made Des laugh (Des Mendez? Excessive.) The two wanted to stay in contact, however, since Russell was always traveling to Alaska and back. Screens gave Des a headache, so VR seemed like the perfect compromise. The pair played several games together online during late-night hours, but TerraSphere was the first one that Des really liked. She’d even play without Russell when he was busy, just for the sake of wandering and exploring the world on a day off. The shooting games and driving games had never really struck a chord, but she loved the realism of TerraSphere, even if it could be uncomfortable sometimes (and was technically illegal.) She has been playing for several months now and has basically accomplished nothing.
