Personality
In every great story, there is the hero, the villain, the damsel in distress. There is the voice of good and that of evil to answer it. There is the powerful leader and their loyal right-hand. There is the wise magus, the gifted apprentice, the noble knight.
Some people are not made for greatness nor gifted by the gods with any particular skill or talent. Some people are simply a stepping stone for the real characters in the tales elders tell their descendants for generations to come, nothing more than minor characters who might never have their name mentioned even the once. Many a man has been driven to dark deeds over inferiority or slights such as these, ambition curdling their relationships and turning them against their peoples.
Feryn has known, however, since his first step into the world this: that he is meant to be just another face in the crowd.
Where ambition could ruin him, he instead accepts his allotment. He accepts mediocrity in avoidance of bitterness. If one does not have expectations, one cannot be let down. His intellect and quiet nature aid in picking up on tasks and doing what is needed, quickly and efficiently... and yet there are always those who surpass him in leaps and bounds at every turn. He is, all in all, average. His temper is a mild thing and he is difficult to anger. He possesses a patience, only swayed by his fears, that would be a credit to him if it didn't mark him as a pushover. His easy acceptance of things and lack of personal passions make his opinions nebulous, only the passion of a bolder personality necessary to sway his thoughts in line with their own. Feryn's own lack of strong commitment to any one idea leaves him with a quiet thirst to be apart of something greater. He wants no spotlight but simply wants to help. The Caenis never sacrifices a night's sleep for dreams of glory, but he'd sleep easier knowing good was done, not in his name or by his hand, but made possible by some drop of water he added to the ocean's tides. Because of this, he is dependable and relegated to even the most menial errands without complaint.
He's aware when he's being used, but too desperate to care.
The one interest that catches him away from his tasks is a curiosity toward the complex world into which he has entered. The creatures that cling to the strange new world in the corner of his eyes distract. The mystery of a game with a robust population of ruins, legends, gods, and spirits whispers strange possibilities. In the presence of the dead, there is no one to fail. They have lost all they had and are so eager to teach, act, and touch. They need hands. Feryn has those. They need magic. Feryn has that. And Feryn can be useful.
Positive: Loyal, Intelligent, Reliable, Curious, Mnemonist

Biography
Lane doesn't talk to his family. Hasn't in a long time. One cousin stole from an uncle who beat his ass, an aunt got involved, his mom got slapped, his brother blamed his mom, and Lane just laughed. Alcoholics or drug-addled minds ruled the family reunions and holidays. They were spread out in the midwest in too many small towns with nothing else to do. He got out before finishing high school, fled across state lines, and worked to get his GED while slaving away at three part-time jobs. He quit pet-sitting after the Jack Russel Terrier at 315 Laney Ct. The bookstore had been nice though. Working the cafe in it had not. He met Naomi though. That was good. He didn't want to die married to a high school sweetheart and working on a farm, in the general store, or a bait shop in The Middle of Nowhere, Nebraska or any one place you could alternatively call 'Hell'. Naomi wasn't that. She was going places.
It took four months of dating, with a break in the middle to 'try other things', before they decided they'd get married. If not for each other, then for tax benefits. He was never sure if she was making it up to save face and pretend she didn't care as much as she did or if she just knew shit about taxes. He didn't. They didn't teach you that getting a GED, it turns out. It worked for years though and their finances steadily improved, so maybe there was something to it.
Naomi got big. She clawed her way up from working as an editor on a local zine to writing movie scripts. Lane kept working whatever he could get. Nothing ever kept his fancy and he moved on quickly past everything but her. He had asked her once in their first year together if she ever wanted kids and she had laughed until she cried and downed a glass of wine, going off on a rant about the state of the nation and her bank account. They'd bought a sad looking beta fish that weekend and put it in a twelve-gallon tank because if they couldn't live in a mansion, then he would. She named him Sprinkles because it made Lane look at his wedding ring like for even a second he actually regretted anything. But Naomi had gotten big and things had changed and Sprinkles had died a year before.
Having a kid was tougher than buying a beta fish. And it didn't work. It didn't work in the way that ended in tears. Naomi recovered physically, but every time she met his eyes, he could see what she didn't want to say. She threw herself into her work instead and he got the divorce papers together. He moved across town. They still shared a bank account and still sent each other pictures of tacky clothes or signs with typos. Lane kept on picking up coffee for her and her assistants, dropping it off on the way to do whatever job he'd gotten a call to do for the day.
When the game came along, it offered a welcome distraction. He wasn't miserable. Or unhappy. Or at a loss. He just really missed Sprinkles was all.
