Personality
Rook is… strange. In real life, he's cripplingly shy and incapable of socializing at all to the point where he never leaves the house. He seems to use a mask to cope in-game by hiding his nose and mouth, which seems to make him more comfortable with other people. Even so, Rook seldom speaks. What communicating he does, he does through noises and gestures. Even on comms, he seems to prefer emoticons or symbols (wingdings is his favorite) to flavor his messages. He sometimes plays on the beaklike shape of his mask, mimicking birdlike gestures and sounds. When he does speak, he seems to actively struggle with putting a full sentence together, broken and hesitant.
Rook prides himself on his speed, finesse and knowledge of swordplay in combat. His player has an obsession with knives, swords, and fighting techniques, so it is Rook's goal to master them all. Rook is quick to impulsively jump to the defense or assistance of those in need. Generally reckless, Rook is quick to run off and investigate topics of interest, sometimes very literally in the middle of a conversation. He doesn’t ever seem to think, just react. If he doesn't like a conversation or how a scene is playing out, he'll just leave, consequences be damned. His player has a fantasy backstory goal to achieve (finding his teacher's lost sword and mapping the country) and plays heavily through that lens.
For being unsociable and odd, Rook can be sort of cute in an innocent way. He experiences wonder and amazement at small, interesting things and derives great amusement from them. He's embarrassed by many social situations and oblivious of many others. He has a difficult time showing caring or emotion, so while he may genuinely like and appreciate other people and do his best to play with them in his weird way, Rook sees nothing wrong with walking away from his relationships as well. He'll break a promise or a deal without even thinking if his whims change and not even consider that he might have done anything wrong.
Positive: Selfless, Honorable, Innocent, Driven, Serious
Negative: Strange, Shy, Quiet, Disloyal, Impulsive
Biography
Miquel has two older sisters and was born in Barcelona, Spain. Having had two children before him, his parents realized quickly that something was different about their son. At three years old, he still hadn’t said his first word. He was withdrawn and strange, refusing to socialize with other children and preferring to drift around his parents and other adults. He used gestures to communicate and only seemed to imitate his parents when coaxed. His parents suspected a hearing disorder and took him to an audiologist, but the real trouble was just an oral-motor problem that made it quite difficult for Miquel to talk. With some coaching, however, he began to improve.
In elementary school, Miquel had an experience with some other children taunting him that seemed to break him. He withdrew completely into his shell, frightening his parents and sisters. They took him out of school and he seemed to recover somewhat, but he’d stopped talking. He took online classes from then on, mutely completing the tasks assigned to him. One of the few times he showed excitement was with books, movies, and video games—something one could dismiss as being “typical kid” if not for Miquel’s normally withdrawn demeanor. He loved reading. In his teen years he became obsessed with knight and samurai stories and became obsessed with swordfights and traditional weapons.
After receiving his diploma, Miquel continued to live at home. Aware their son was “special,” his parents didn’t object. They could hardly imagine him fitting into the work world as he was, and he didn’t cost them much room and board. He stayed in his room, ate peckishly, and could usually be found plugged into some device or another. Altogether he was never an unpleasant child, but the relatives talked about how strange he was. Hoping he would socialize more and slowly indoctrinate himself into society, his parents got him VR. It was no surprise that Miquel quickly managed to get his hands on the illegal software for Terrasphere and crafted his own custom character for it, ready to play a real hero's journey, swords and all.
