Potential generations of misunderstandings (INV)

Discussion in 'The Slums' started by Auriel, Nov 12, 2016.

  1. Pass out

    profile
_____Auriel was still freaking out until she saw the medic kit in the dwarf's hands. He breath slowing slightly as she tried, very hard to regain at least some composure. her eyes looking towards those around her, mostly the kids. If they seemed scared of her she would try harder to clam her nerves. Slowly moving her left hand to take off the right glove to show the small goblin tooth fragment still resting in the back of her hand. The right hand then unlocking the four clips that held her chest plate and coat together to remove the sleeved jacket and show some more bandages, some had a bit of blood, while others had more and seemed to have been reopened during her struggle.

_____Auriel kept her gaze down and away from Hestia, still unable to look the goddess in the eyes. Focus slowly blurring as she rapidly shacked her head to try and stay awake. Her figure slowly slumping as she looked ready to pass out, not just from the pain but exhaustion. She had to try and save face, even if she was in such a state if she was making someone worry she tried her best to make sure they worried less about her. "Sorry... I ..." Auriel could not even finish her apology as her head leaned left and she blacked out. It would be a few seconds before she seemed to snore lightly.

"There we go, there we go. We'll fix you up as best as we can," Hestia said with a warm smile. The smile fell away the minute Auriel passed out on the bed. "Oh no. Is she-?"

"She'll be fine, Hestia," the dwarf woman said to her as she carefully removed the goblin tooth fragment from the Pallum's hand, "She just needs rest by the looks of it. Poor girl, wonder what happened to her down there?"

"I don't know. Poor thing, she looks so exhausted..." Hestia sighed as she put away the book she still held in her hands and started to patch up the Pallum girl. She made sure the wounds were disinfected before wrapping the bandages around the wounds. It took a while, but they finally finished patching the poor girl up. "Thank you for the help as always, Nalsora."

"No problem. Just make sure this girl stays in bed for a while, okay?" She nodded as the matron turned to see that there were some children staring curiously at the Pallum girl in the infirmary. "Hey now, shoo! Go on, the girl needs her rest!" The children laughed as they quickly scattered and the matron followed after them. Hestia let out a tiny smile at the display before turning to Auriel's sleeping form.

Her gaze fell on the book the Pallum girl had dropped. "...Hm..." She took the book into her hands and rested it on her lap. She was curious as to what was inside it, after all the girl seemed to be carrying it when they first met her. Was it something religious? She did mention she was searching for the goddess for something... Curiousity won her over and she opened the book, pouring over its contents.

  3. Waking up

    profile
_____Auriel was still passed out as Hestia opened the book. If she opened to the first page only one question was left at the top of the page with lines to fill in the answer or reply to the question. ‘Are you Fiona… Or at least the goddess the influenced the Pallum’s religious beliefs?” However the rest of the pages had all been blank, unlike the first time Hestia might have seen the content of the book.

_____If Hestia closed the book it would cause Auriel to begin stirring as she quickly sat up screaming. Her face lined with terror as she seemed still lost in her sleep, her hands waving around as she started moving to get out of the bed in her freak out. If she was allowed to get out of bed her wounds would open once more as she looked around, her eyes lost in a daze as she kept waving her hands through the air. "Sis … Where … Anyone! Someone!” Auriel would fall to her knees as she started crying.
    @Hestia

Hestia closed the book with a sigh upon seeing the single question written on a sheet of paper. She was not Fiona, she knew this. She was not the goddess the Pallums looked up to and it was quite sad that Auriel thought she was their god. Even though she had taken the form of a Pallum as her mortal form, it did not mean that she was their goddess.

Hestia looked up in alarm when Auriel woke up suddenly, screaming. The girl landed on the floor, reopening her wounds in the process. The goddess immediately stood up, dropping the book to the floor. She then began to kneel by the girl as she put a hand on her head. "Shh, shh, it's just a nightmare, it'll pass," she murmured. She didn't know how to make the girl snap out of it, but she found that moving someone who was suffering from a night terror was a bad idea, since the person in question would lash out quickly.

  5. Nervous

_____Soon after Auriel started to cry she would slowly fall towards the ground, her mind slightly easing before her eyes began to open slowly, no longer lost in her nightmare. Her first sight was Hestia causing Auriel to try and crawl away only to wince slightly due to her wounds. Slowly looking towards Hestia the Pallum smiled truthfully. She did not get many decent minutes of sleep, but what she had gotten was enough for her to not freak out so much as her face was dyed a light red blush.

_____"Sorry... I ... Never had a easy life ... haunts me even to this day and when I close my eyes..." Auriel spoke faintly as she sat up looking towards Hestia. Auriel wanted to do something to make up for causing the goddess so much trouble. Nervously weaving her fingers together in her lap she looked to the goddess with soft and troubled eyes that told her train of thought. "I'm not good at many things... but Im a decent chef... I mean ... um ..." Auriel turned red trying to figure out how to word her sentence without sounding like she was trying to ask the goddess out on a date or something.

"I see..." Hestia said, a look of worry on her face. So the poor girl did went through a lot in her past. Poor thing, she thought to herself as got up from where she was kneeling. "You're still hurt. Please, rest yourself for a little while before going out," the goddess said as she motioned for the girl to get back on the bed and lay down.

She paused as she tried to think of what to say next. Her mind went to the question the girl wanted to ask. "...I looked into your book while you were sleeping," she said finally after an uncomfortable pause, "I do apologize for prying like that." Another pause before she sighed. She didn't know what to say to the girl concerning that, but she knew Auriel would be crushed to know she wasn't the goddess Fiona.

  7. Nervous

_____Auriel nodded with compliance towards the goddess telling her to lay back down. She knew her wounds would hinder her return to the military HQ, but she felt bad taking up a bed within the home of Hestia because she was not strong enough to protect herself that well. She stopped with her hand on the bed when Hestia mention her book she had come here with. "All the Pallum have is hope, be it a flickering spark, or less for others... If the goddess does not exist ... I guess I can't roll over dead until I hold the name of Fiona to help my people get back out of the ashes and start anew can I?" Auriel gripped the blanket tightly, her wound bleed a it for her action before she moved to lay down.

_____Auriel sat up slightly to remove some of her armor before she spoke to Hestia again. "Well I can't come here on a wasted trip ... I know I'm not much ... but if you need a cook for the kids I can lend a hand... it's the only thing Im good at aside from causing people trouble." Auriel's mind began to think of how she might rise to gain the title of the non-existent Pallum goddess, however the thoughts caused her to pass out shortly after starting to think as she snored lightly, her figure now slightly more at peace despite getting the hint her people's goddess truly did not exist.

"I see. So that's why..." Hestia looked at Auriel sadly. "It's good that you want to bring hope to your people even in times of hardship," she said, a soft, sad smile on her face, "I'm sure they'll look up to you when the time comes." She paused as the girl mentioned that she could help cook for the children of the orphanage. "Oh, I don't mind some extra h-"

She blinked when she realized the girl had fallen asleep. "Poor thing..." She sighed as she sat at the edge of the bed and thought about the girl's situation. She knew, deep down, that she wanted to support the girl in her endeavors as best as the goddess possibly could. She had a noble and difficult task in mind, with her wanting her people to have hope. But hope still existed and she wanted to make the girl's dream a reality. She watched over her as time passed on.

  9. Sleepy head

    profile
_____Auriel had gotten the best knight sleep she had ever gotten in, well as far back as she could remember. While she might have mumbled about her sister and being trapped under something or another, a few tears rolling off her face, and a lot of flipping and rolling on the bed she seemed to be perfectly fine in her sleep. It was a long slumber though, a little over five hours before she woke up noticing she passed out on the bed without even asking to rest on it.

_____Slowly rising to sit up Auriel looked around trying to see if anyone was still around her. Sadly she was still sleepy so her vision was blurred and her hearing a bit messed up. Left hand covering her lips as she yawned while the other rubbed her eyes to try and clean out the crust and wake herself up faster. "Never knew a better nap then that..." She yawned once more now working on cleaning her ears out somewhat. Her hair was a mess and her cloths slightly offset from all her tossing and turning. But she seemed much better then when she met Hestia earlier.

Hestia couldn't stay with Auriel forever, she had children to attend to. Once she made sure the girl would get enough sleep, she slipped quietly off the bed and out of the infirmary. She would take one last glance back at the girl, her gaze lingering for a moment before she closed the door behind her and went off to attend to the children.

Time passed and it was starting to near dinner time for the group of children. Hestia decided to check up on Auriel to see if she was awake now. As she climbed up the steps, she couldn't help but feel worry for the girl that seemed to be very troubled indeed. She hoped she would be okay on her own, despite the feeling she was getting that told her that the girl will be fine. She opened the door and her eyes lit up at seeing the girl awake. "Oh, you're awake!" she exclaimed as she went over to the girl, "Feeling better?"

_____Auriel moved her gaze to the door to see Hestia, quickly staggering herself to stand beside the bed as she bowed her head with respect towards the goddess. "Thank you for letting me sleep on the bed... and staying here while I recovered slightly ... and tending to my wounds after I reopened them trying to run away..." Auriel slowly raised her head again, her left hand twirling her bangs slowly, a little habit she did when she was holding something back from being spoken.

_____Auriel moved her focus to a window to try and get a thought about what time it was. Looking back to Hestia she smiled weakly, left hand holding her right hand as she spoke shyly. "If you need some help cooking food for everyone ... I can lend a hand... Least I can try to do as a way to show my thanks for your hospitality..." Auriel turned after she finished speaking to go and get her armor and clothes back on. She struggled with the fastens to her chest armor for a bit before they finally clicked into place.

"It's alright, dear. You didn't cause any trouble," Hestia said with a smile as the girl showed her gratitude. She didn't question the odd gesture the girl did when she twirled her bangs, she just assumed it was like her nail biting habit whenever she was worried. Whatever the gesture meant, she welcomed the girl to stay at the orphanage.

"Oh? You'll do that for the children?" she asked as her eyes shined, "I'm sure they would be very happy to try out your cooking. I'll show you where the kitchen is. Come." With that, she beckoned the girl to come with her and walked downstairs to where the kitchen was. When they arrived, Auriel could see that there was one or two volunteers already at work. They stopped what they were doing momentarily and waved to Hestia as she entered. The goddess looked back at the Pallum girl with a smile. "I bet your cooking will taste lovely. What do you plan on making?" she asked.

_____Auriel was nervous to say the least when she entered the kitchen. Before she even thought about cooking anything she needed to look over what exactly she had to work with. She knew her way around some of the most simple kitchens, and some on a much grander scale like the one in the Military HQ. So for the time being she would overlook each pantry, taking note of each item she saw, she would check for the cooking areas. Stoves, ovens steamers fryers or anything the kitchen might have also played a big roll in how one made a meal.

_____After her sweep of both the cooking areas and the foods within the kitchen her focus would set on the other dishes that had been made. She made sure not to touch them or get to close, her eyes focusing on them before she would move back to the sink and rinse her hands off. Slowly drying them before she rolled up her sleeves and looked towards Hestia with a light blush. "First time I tried cooking for kids... Do any of them have any food allergies I should be aware of before I start cooking?" Auriel asked with true kindness in her eyes before she moved to get out a few dishes for the dish she was still thinking about in her head. Having a large arsenal of known dishes was hard to pick one.

"Food allergies? Oh! Some can't stand nuts while others can't eat fruit. I don't know why they can't eat fruit, though, but they break out into hives and have trouble breathing when it touches their tongue," Hestia explained to Auriel as the other began scrutinizing the dishes. She simply waited at the entrance to see what the Pallum girl would do.

While the cooking went on, Hestia couldn't help but think about Auriel. The poor girl needed a direction of some sort, something to raise her spirits since she had such low self esteem. But how would she go about doing that? She briefly thought of inviting her into her familia, but she wasn't quite sure if the girl would accept. Still, she wanted to help her in some way, she just wasn't sure how.

_____Auriel nodded before she cracked her knuckles and started getting out what she would be using. She pulled out a small amount of Ginger, some tomatoes, and a piece of meat. She was honestly not sure what she should or should not use in the kitchen because it was not her own. But as she began cutting up the tomatoes and sprinkling the finely deiced pieces with the ginger she seemed to somewhat know her way around the Kitchen. Cutting the bottom side of the meat with a cross pattern and deep enough to leave vents through the mean before placing it over the diced tomato and ginger mix.

_____If Hestia knew that both Ginger and tomato helped make meat more tender and even rival some more expensive meats for a lower price, Auriel would be slightly shocked to be honest. Moving the dish into the oven before she focused on the next part to complement the dish. with memory of rice being one of the dishes already made she went about using some of the remaining rice for the next part. Setting some water to boil on the stove before she went about chopping and skinning the sweet potatoes. Dropping the cut pieces into the water before she moved onto the onion cutting.

_____Her hands gliding across both knife and onion as she thinly sliced them and added them into a sauté pan along with curry powder, cumin, and cinnamon, Slowly stirring them with a wooden spoon until it was all evenly covered this of course was done a few minutes after the onions had time to soften. She seemed entirely focused on her dish, to be honest if she tried to explain what she was doing she was likely to fail with something or another as she stirred the content a bit more noticing some still had only a small bit of the spices on them.

As Auriel cooked, Hestia began to take part in some cooking herself to help out the volunteers. She was currently chopping some vegetables finely and sprinkling them in a soup that was located in one of the larger pots. The smell wafted throughout the kitchen as the four of them worked to create something for the children.

Sometimes she would glance at the people working with her to see how they were doing. She smiled lightly when she noticed that Auriel was very focused on her cooking. It was nice, seeing her concentrate and not seeing her apologizing, not that the goddess minded, but she would be happier knowing the girl had some confidence to her. She hoped that whatever she was making would prove to be delicious.

_____Auriel moved to lower the heat to give her some extra time to chop what else she needed as she went. Dicing the tomatoes, adding them to her sauté pan along with some chickpeas before mixing the blend together, adding some water, and raising the heat higher then before to start the next part of the cooking. However due to her dislike of spinach she left it out and checked on her meat instead. Slowly pouring some of the juice from the meat over the top before closing the oven and returning her focus to the sauté dish.

_____ With her potatoes softened she mixed them into the pan and stirred it some more. Closing the lid as she let the flavors begin to blend within while she got out the meat. it had been almost thirty minutes since she had started cooking and the smell of the meat washed outward as she pulled it out and tried to get it onto a cutting board. Her knife sank through the meat like butter as she finely cut it into the same size as the potato before mixing it into the other dish in a large bowl.

_____She nervously blushed as she finished her work and just had to stir it and bring it out. However she knew all to well the moment she picked it up and tried to bring it out she would trip and ruin the entire dish. Looking towards the others as she looked at her dish once more trying to find the words she wanted to say. " Could someone else bring it out... With my luck I'll end up tripping and ruining everything..." Auriel moved away from the dish as the scent soaked into the air some more. It was well thought blend of earthly scents and sweetness. It also was a full coarse meal when paired with rice for Curry. Auriel wishes she had some lamb though since the meat would off set the flavor some due to the type.

After some time, Hestia took note that the meal was almost finished being prepared. They just had to add in a few garnishes and seasonings before the food would be complete. She looked at the door frame as the matron from before, Nalsora, came into the kitchen. "Alright, kids are ready and waiting for the food," she said as she eyed the Pallum girl. She grunted as she took the dish from her and began to move it outside to where all the orphans were waiting.

"Thank you, Nalsora," she said before turning to Auriel, "And thank you for cooking for the children, I'm sure they'll love it." She began to help the other volunteers carry out the food to the dining room where the children waited. Some greeted Hestia while others looked at the food with eager little eyes. She went back into the kitchen to get more food out when something popped into her mind. "Why don't you join us? I'm sure you must be hungry right now," she addressed Auriel as she got the food to the table.

There really wasn't any need for saying grace, considering that they were in the presence of a goddess, but the children and the adults who were with them remained quiet as Hestia spoke. "Thank you, everyone, for coming here tonight," she said as she eyed each and every one of them, "And I would like to thank each and every one of you for helping around the orphanage. I'm sure it wouldn't be standing here today if it wasn't for the volunteers and the matrons doing their work." She gave the adults a smile before she continued. "I want us to be thankful for having this bountiful feast in front of us, prepared by hard workers. Give thanks as they have given you the food to eat and the drinks to drink. Now, I believe it's time to eat, hm?" She waited for the children to start eating before she began to sing.

    Awaken and rise
To the glow of the sun
    The fire is out
    The ashes have settled
Come, my dear, and light it up again
    For the hearth is always
    Home

    Go about your day
    A job, a lunch, a life
    The fire flickers
    Waiting for your return
Come, my dear, come home soon
    For the hearth is always
    Home

    Come back home
To a family, to a business, to a house
    The fire blazes
    Merrily as it provides warmth
Come, my dear, sit by the fire
    For the hearth is always
    Home
Once she was done with her song, she started to grab some food for herself while watching the children talk to each other happily. She noted that the older ones were testing out the curry Auriel had made while the younger ones...well, they were more leery of curry that was prepared for them. After all, it was something knew and some of the children preferred things to stay the same way. "It's good!" One of them called out, taking a second helping of curry.

"You have Auriel to thank for that," she said.

    "New volunteer?"

"Hm, perhaps." She began chewing on her food thoughtfully as everyone ate.

_____Auriel looked away from the goddess with a faint blush. She wanted to say she was not hungry but her stomach growled lightly giving it away. Looking towards the goddess she smiled faintly before she spoke. "The food would taste better without me nearby... It was nice meeting you and everyone... If you ever stop by the old ruins you can find me at the Military base..." it might have surprised Hestia that such a person was serving.

_____ But it was the fact she was serving that helped keep her from walking off a cliff. If there was a chance to be deployed during a war she would die a just death. The thoughts showed in her eyes as she began to walk out of the kitchen towards the exit of the orphanage. She did not want to admit it, but she liked it a great deal here. But it was that fondness of a place that she would have to leave it, to avoid causing darkness to befall it like her home town.

_____Auriel blamed herself for anything bad that happen to those around her. She might be named after a angel of hope, but she felt more like the bringer of bad luck more then anything. Unless someone tried to drag her back into the dinning room she would leave and go back to the military base. However she had left her book and belt that held her dagger. One could only hope a kid did not think it was just another toy of some kind, the blade was dangerously sharp.

It was a shame that Auriel couldn't really stay, but at least she found the children liking the curry that the Pallum had made. She planned on giving her her thanks when she found the time to look for her. She ate quietly as she watched the children talk to each other. Then she stood up, as if remembering something. "What, you're done now?" Nalsora asked as she ate the food laid out for her.

"I think Auriel forgot her book here, I need to return it," she responded, earning a nod from the dwarf woman before going out of the dining hall and into the infirmary. When she entered, she began to look around the room for anything that seemed amiss. She found the book and the girl's belt and dagger on the bed. "Oh dear, that's no good," she mumbled as she took the items and ran downstairs as fast as she could.

The goddess ran out of the door, trying to look for Auriel. Where is that girl? she wondered as she ran out beyond the gate and into the city streets. "Auriel! Auriel?" she called out, "You left some things at the orphanage! Auriel?" She began to look around for the girl, trying to find her in the slums.
