  3. _____If there was such a thing as a extremely bad idea, this had to be in the top ten from Alice as she looked down into the large hole in the castle floor. Her heart felt like it was going to give out at any moment as she swallowed back her lunch and began her descent. She was one of the many asked to try and support the tunnels below so the castle did not further collapse, but she seriously felt like her trying to support the structure was asking for bad news.

_____Thankfully others would be, maybe protecting her as she set up roots to support the areas, but so far she seemed alone in her given location. Inhaling deeply before gagging at the smell she focused herself and decided it was time to get to work. Arms reaching out as she slowly waved them drawing her energy out, not so much like a dance but without her voice. She was lucky not to be going extremely deep, but the risk was still lurking in the darkness as roots began breaking soil and waving into the tunnel to try and hold it steady.

_____She was lucky not to have any trouble starting up her magic, but as the ground below her began trembling she figured good times would not last forever and her fear began bubbling up as she steadily walked forward moving her roots along with her. Some might have not even seen her consider her height and the only hint she was there was her blonde hair reflecting the faint torch light carried by one of her roots beside her.

_____This was also the time Alice learned a valuable lesson that motion and fire attracted members of the brood, the ground breaking ahead of Alice and rocks knocking her head as the first wurm rose facing her. Animals sure, people maybe, but the moment Alice saw a monster she freaked out and did one of the worst things, scream. The high pitched panic carried in the tunnel and caused some ground to fall as she was no more freaked by her own voice and screamed again.

_____As the wurm moved to loom over Alice she fell backwards and crawled against the ground, her sky blue eyes filled with fear and the reflecting of the monster as it kept moving closer to Alice’s face. This was going to be her end? Trying to help people and getting killed because she had everything focused on supporting the area? Tears starting to trace down her face as she closed her eyes and grimly awaited to be eaten alive.

  6. They weren't descending very far, Claire reminded herself. There were other parties that were delving far deeper into the network of caverns and tunnels than she would ever dare go.

The reminders did nothing for the tense set to her shoulders as she walked along with her party members for this venture. The small faerin woman was working hard at supporting the tunnels with her plant magic and so all she had to worry about was keeping her safe and exterminating any wurms left. That was fine. Claire had had to do similar protection quests in the past.

But the memory of the immense Elder Wurm loomed in her mind, and though she knew it was highly unlikely that there were any of that size remaining, thoughts of another of them bursting through the ground filled her mind.

And of course, that was when the ground erupted in front of her.

There was screaming that echoed through the tunnels as Alice stumbled back, one of the small wurms surging towards her. With a curse, Claire tossed out her hand to freeze the creature where it was, only just barely managing to stop it before it latched onto Alice. Quickly forming a blade at the end of her polearm--why did she not consider that a polearm would be a terrible weapon in enclosed spaces, why--she swung and sliced the wurm in half.

Alice looked so frightened that Claire wanted to ask her if she would be okay, but there was no time for checking up on others, as the ground rumbled again and even more wurms started pouring out of the ground, attracted by the sound of screaming and the smell of fresh blood.

  9. Ben had to wonder to himself why he'd even bothered to delve into the cavern. It certainly hadn't been for the glory of vanquishing disgusting Blood Wurms. There was probably nothing of value down here either. Probably. But he had no time to regret his decisions of exploring because a bunch of those nasty creatures had come to devour them.

Claire had reacted without hesitation, destroying the first one so it wouldn't hurt their little support Faerin. Ben reacted, feeling the vibrations of new predators approaching, and warmed up with a dance. By the time the new Wurms breached the surface, Ben's singing and dancing had progressed into a truly tantalizing sight, confusing and slowing down the Wurm's long enough for him to twirl closer and slice them up with his dagger.

He only managed to get one down before he had to back up again, his dance interrupted by a Wurm crashing where he'd stood before.

  12. What she wanted more than anything was to run into the danger, especially as she saw her teammates getting thrown off by the wurms that so yearned for their lives. The more the wurms tunneled in to attack, however, the more she found herself having to hold up the crumbling walls, trying to keep Alice from being hurt by debris along with the rest.

With a grunt, she found herself barely holding the walls together, trying to use her holy magic to call for the tunnels and wurms to stay still and at ease. Sure, praying didn't always work, but it was a good sentiment, so she thought. Glancing at each side of her, she wondered just what she could do to protect the rest of her team.

"Ben!" Jumping, she was quick to cast a barrier, hoping to at least slow down the wurm on it's way towards the dancer. His skill in music was surely strong- it had even distracted her from her job, unfortunately- but that wasn't enough to stop these beasts, and she knew it.

"This tunnel really doesn't want to hold, does it Alice?" She glanced to the small faerin, who was working so hard as a support alongside her. Groaning under debris that continued to come at her when wurms got closer, she felt herself wincing just slightly. "Alice, if it starts to get too much, tell me, okay? Everyone, make sure to tell me!"

  15. _____As everyone seemed to arrive to assist in the exploration Alice figured she had to get her guts about her. Hands moving slowly outward flipping her palms from facing up towards the ground as the moved before more roots surged out and began stabilizing the tunnel. A small dense bush cut across the opening made from the wurm in the ground to allow the group to carefully proceed. The roots acting as a natural air filter much like the leafs of a tree would due to the magic imbued into them.

_____Alice smiled to Solaria before nudging her head forward as a hopeful hint to go join the others and allow her to handle the weight alone. She was the worst for fighting, but when it came to her desire to keep others safe she clearly started to show a bit more talent then she let off prior. As she slowly advanced she resumed waving and weaving her hands and arms, the roots crossing paths and piercing into the walls and ceiling where it seemed about ready to give to support the weight.

_____While Alice could deal with the tunnels, the dangerous fumes, and if needed healing her party she was left wide open if any wurms managed to reach her. She had to help the group advances faster so nobody would get seriously hurt. Her arms waving inward before slamming the earth and allowing larger roots to start sprouting from the earth to make things safer. A wurm attempting to break through the wall was successful and followed by smaller kin.

_____Alice wished she could help her group even just a bit, but as she tried to move a root to hold a wurm the tunnel began to shake and she was forced to send the root to hold the falling section up. The good news was she had plenty of time to think about what happen not long ago. She was not expecting any sound to have escaped her lips but sure enough she was able to scream, did that mean she could also talk while in the game?

_____It was truly something she wanted to find out, but seeing her work starting to get a bit sloppy and a rock dropping on her head she figured now was not the best time to do vocal testing and resumed her focus on keeping the others safe. casting a small healing spell over the air to lighten the fumes to be bearable on their lungs before she focused on trying to support the tunnel further ahead of them for when they made it past these foes. There was no doubt in her mind, she trusted them to be able to survive this and escape.

  18. Well, this was no good. Claire grimaced as she and Ben worked to clear the tunnels. Alice focused on reinforcing the tunnels as they fought and Solaria's combative support abilities were very helpful, but the little worms were voracious. Moreover, the tight confined spaces of the tunnel made it difficult to fight in tandem, and Claire got the feeling that the wide sweeping motions she was used to would be more of a hindrance than a help.

All right. Changing tactics, then. Rather than a scythe blade, Claire focused and caused her ice to reform into a sharpened spear point. She began jabbing at the wurms that approached, movements clumsy at first. Hopefully the game would let her compensate for the new fighting style faster than normal.

Alice looked to be doing her best to keep the tunnels from collapsing in around them. She was doing a great job of managing not only that, but also the fumes of toxic gases that leaked into their tunnel from neighboring ones. It wasn't a perfect job, as Claire discovered for herself when she took a deep breath after a particularly strenuous combo and nearly coughed her lungs out, but it kept them alive as they made slow, but steady progress through the tunnels.

  21. He hummed low in appreciation as Solaria saved his ass, the massive Wurm bouncing off of her barrier, breaking it to pieces. That did not save him from being bashed into a crumbling wall by another feisty Wurm, taking quite a bit of health out of him. He hissed, eyes squeezed tight to stop the tears from dropping. He quickly found his revenge in the form of stabbing the damn monster repeatedly, his blade piercing its flesh long after it had died, collapsing to the floor. His ribs hurt. They were probably bruised, but the pain was rather subdued because of his pain settings. He didn't want to imagine what it was like on realistic mode.

He looked back to the two supports and wiped at his face with the back of his hand. "One of you," he practically growled as he followed in Claire's footsteps, "needs to help us fight. Keeping the tunnels up is fine and dandy but won't matter if the Wurms kill us all anyway!" Rubbing at his smarting ribs with his free hand, he used the other to hold his dagger in front of him.

At least they'd taken down quite a few of those pesky monsters. Ben wasn't sure how many more he could handle. While they weren't exactly difficult to kill, the Wurms hit hard, knocking him around with ease. He didn't really want to try dying just yet.

  24. The battle wasn't getting easier, and her teammates were starting to get weak. She had thought the sidelines was a better fit for her, but having grown stronger since starting, she knew the pleas for help were a sign she was in the wrong spot. She gave Alice a gentle glance and a pat on the back in encouragement, before rushing to help fight the wurms.

Pulling her sword into a ready position, she used a kendo-like style to swipe her katana at her enemies. Sadly, the worms were quite well guarded. "Even if I help, I don't think we're getting rid of them easily! Does anyone have an idea of how to stop these things before they stop us? And...Maybe someone can cast a healing spell too? I'm starting to regret not doing that first!"

Regret wasn't normally in her repertoire of emotions. Impulsive actions were in her blood, it was what ran most of her life. She could name probably a dozen relatives with this same need to act before thinking, and as she tried to defend herself from the wurms she'd angered because of it, she was thrown into one of the already crumbling walls. "Damn! These things are too sturdy! We need a better way to get past them!"

  27. ______Alice wanted to help them more, her healing was mostly dealing with the dangerous fumes and her focus locked on keeping them from getting crushed. She wanted to be able to focus on keeping them alive more but her magic was weak for healing and better at stopping them from getting crushed. She could not even bring herself to say sorry to them as she moved her main roots further ahead and caused smaller roots to branch out and cross across the tunnel to prevent any more worms in the area.

_____She could not do much against the air issues as Alice moved forward trying to finish her job quickly so the others could get out and be properly healed. If any of them died it would be her fault, the fact she could not support them and the area at the same time clearly showed how bad she was for other people. She and them would be so much better if she just quit playing and stayed in her hospital room until she passed away. Sighing lightly and shivering at her own mouth making sound as she kept moving forward blocking the routes.

  30. Well. This situation was... not great, to put it in a few words. There were just so many wurms crawling out of every part of the tunnels that they had barely made any progress. Alice was doing her best to block off any open entrances, but when the wurms could burrow, it didn't help much. But it did give them all some time to catch their breaths.

"So," Claire said, raising her voice to be heard over the fighting. "I don't think it would be wise to press on any further. We should return to the surface and inform people that there are more wurms than normal in this area."

There wasn't a chance to wait for a response, as Claire saw a few wurms nearing her. Picking up her spear again, she got to work holding them at bay. The next time it seemed like the endless tide of wurms was thinning, then she'd hear what her fellow players had to say.

  33. There was yet another break in the combat as the Wurms decided to leave them be, their brethren dead or dying and no backup coming. Perhaps they'd gone to whack around some other idiot crawling through these caverns. He should've gone with a different group. Somebody that could carry him through this death trap. Oh well.

He looked to Claire, and then the other two girls, a frown on his lips. "We keep this up, and we're dead," he said simply. It wouldn't have been a problem if they were getting some healing from either of their two supports, but it didn't look like they could do that.

Should they head back? He supposed it would come down to the other two and their decision. He couldn't go back alone without risking his life regardless. "You think there are many more of these things?" he asked, pointing his thumb over his shoulder at the direction they were heading in.

  36. Solaria began to pant while slashing through the beasts that came at her and threatened her new friends. Others spoke of running, and on the one hand, she could see that being a good plan. On the other hand, she had her share of concerns for what would happen if they did.

"If we run, these things might just chase us out of the tunnel. We can't exactly stay here, but letting them escape and injure people not part of this quest probably isn't a good idea either! I'm good with running, but not at the risk of others. I'll do what you guys want to do, though."

The air was toxic and getting hard to breathe- she was beginning to regret a bit of this battle, particularly the fact that she wasn't strong enough to protect anyone from the fumes. "If this place collapses, we're just as screwed as we'll be if we stay. This is far from a win-win situation...At least for us."

Glancing behind her towards Alice, the faerin that had taken the brunt of the support side since she'd opted to rush in to attack in the end, she frowned a bit. "How about you, @Alice? Are you holding up okay...?"

  39. _____Alice could not stand it, they had come so far and everyone tried so hard to explore and protect her and now they had been so close yet so far off it seemed. Building up her own bravery she ran forward, she had to finish exploring and setting the area to avoid collapse she owed them that much. Wurms rushing from the ground to try and stop her as Root broke the tunnel around her and bashed them along the walls causing the tunnel to shake slightly. She lost her focus on keeping the area safe, she wanted to reach the end, even if it was a rushed supporting job Alice wanted to make sure everyone’s efforts did not go to waste.

_____More rocks falling down on her frame as she began to have trails of blood across her face but kept going, the fumes filling her panted breath as she tried her hardest to keep moving, to finish what everyone needed her to do. Eventually if nobody decided to follow her deeper into the network she would be overrun trying her hardest, but maybe if they all gave one final push into the darkness they could see the brighter light of the surface that came from both making it back alive and finishing the quest as a team.

_____Needless to say Alice would be spending some real time thinking about how to make herself more useful for others, how she could make sure her teams never suffered like they had during this quest, and how she could be someone they could fully trust to guard the rear and heal them back up. This was going to be her turning point, she was done dragging others down and would strive with everything she had to prove she could change. Roots rising into the tunnel to support the area and soak up some of the fumes as the Faerin went all or nothing, with or without their help.

"Just a bit more until the end and it's all supported. Just a few more roots and the fumes will be dealt with... I have to try... I can't let everyone down after they supported me all this way..."

  42. Ben made a fair point. They had no way of knowing whether the path back was safe to traverse. Actually, it was fairly likely that they would have to fight their way back to the surface. Maybe they could do it, if the four of them all decided to head back as one.

But Alice blazed on ahead in a sudden burst of movement. Looks like that decision was made for them, then. Biting back a curse, Claire followed after her, stabbing at any wurms that still remained.

Exhaustion was catching up to her. In the dimly lit confines of the tunnel, trying to keep track of where each new enemy was emerging was a futile task, the problem compounded by the sudden light-headedness brought on by the heavier concentration of toxic fumes.

That's why Claire didn't see it coming. One wurm latched onto her side like a leech and she staggered in pain as its sharp teeth pierced her torso. The scent of fresh blood seemed to attract the rest of the wurms, and they all piled on her, biting at every bit of exposed skin in a frantic rush to find more blood. She couldn't keep a hold of her weapon, letting the spear drop to the ground with a clatter. The last thing she saw before the endless dark consumed her was the ravenous maw of a wurm lunging at her face, and then-
