  1. Why was she back in this cursed crystallized region again? No, it wasn't because she missed encountering prism-shaped mechanical monsters that could shoot purple lazor, nor was it because she wanted to get herself turned into a crystal due to reckless mining that bore no results. Eldhi had an important business today, specifically regarding arms and armor.

See, she thought it was about time to change her poor copper longsword into something else, the blade had served her well but after all her adventures, it started to chip and bent, it didn't feel right in her hands anymore. She could get it fixed but the incredibly cheap price didn't warrant spending gold on it, better to just get a new one. Only a simpleton would think otherwise.

Fortunately, one of her companions during the Princess rescue mission deep in the unnamed mountainous region, Ursula Goldsmith the Tinkerer Extraordinaire, was also a blacksmith. The white-haired Paladin had arranged a commission for a new longsword and to return the favor, Eldhi agreed to escort her as she gathered the necessary materials. Zalra huh... that'd mean her sword would be hard and shiny like a diamond! Oh nice~ very nice. She'd do all in her power to make sure this mining expedition went smoothly. Ursa would handle all the mining, of course, Eldhi certainly wasn't going to try that again after last time...

@Ursa Heyo! I've arrived at our rendezvous point, sending you the exact location now. Everything looks good so far, just crystals all around. Don't worry, I'll keep you safe should anything happen. :)

  2. Step followed by step, a rough sigh escaped Ursula’s lips. Crystallized Zalra, a natural — or not — place that she held some grudge because of the environment that had managed to beat her mining skills before. She treaded on a path that the crystallization infection was barely present, since she’d need to reach her destination at the best of her health because digging and mining in this place was no easy task. While she slowly progressed within the crystal forest, her mind remembered about the specifics shared by her mentor about the rendezvous point, where most crystals were supposed to have a dark coloration. Following north from there, they should find an abandoned orichalcum mine.

But Ursa would never go through the pain of all this for just about anyone, no — this time around, it was one of the people that deserved the Goldsmith’s Recluse emblem of steel; @Eldhi Arc, the paladin of Tyl. The blacksmith saw her skills back in the mountain pass while fighting off the Aesirs to reach a rendezvous point in the mountains back then. Regardless of her deitic alignment, Ursa would gladly help someone of such value and that had no problems with sharing her power to help with fighting off the pirates. In the blonde’s eyes, it was only a fair trade for her to help out the paladin with a new and proper weapon.

Her blue eyes narrowed down on her destination not too far away, as she could already make the crystals with slightly darker tones. Suddenly, Ursula could hear a beep and one of the tiny magic boxes appeared before her vision again, only to be quickly shooed away with an annoyed grunt. She was no magic user, and yet these things kept popping up all the time!

As she approached the rendezvous, Ursula waved at Eldhi’s sillhouette in the distance as she approached. The crystal infections was starting to pick up at this point, so Ursa would be straight to the point because they had no time to waste. “Howdy, Eldhi-missy. How ya doin’? Hope ye ready for some crystal party, ya know?” A silly grin was plastered on her lips. “I’mma be straight to the point, aye. Just north of here, we’ll find a bunch ol’ orichalcum mines that been abandoned for a good ol’ long time n’ all that, ya know. Boss told me I could find somethin’ there that channels the light magickus pockus pretty easily ‘n all that. Y’all ready and prepared for goin’ in?” In case Ursula received a positive reply, she’d give Eldhi a thumbs up before heading out for the mines.

Much to their dismay, however, at this point the crystallization curse would star to kick in. Since they had taken relatively safe routes up until now, however, the only symptom would be a simple yet abnormal chill through the body. “Ya know, I hate ‘dis feelin’. It’s like ‘dis goddamned place is tellin’ you ‘quack off!’ or somethin’, ya git what I mean?” She looked behind her, to make sure everything was alright with Eldhi, focusing her eyes on the path ahead shortly after.

Eventually, they arrived at what appeared to be the entrance to the abandoned mines. Many age old tools were scattered around the crystallized ground, crates and heavier equipment stored in a large cave where light seemed to have a hard time pushing through. Ursula purposefuly stepped on the ground inside the cave, the crystallization curse hissing at the sole of her boots. “Aye, this place ain’t kiddin’ with us ya know.” The messy-haired blacksmith glanced back towards Eldhi. “Can some of yer divine spell things at least slow down this crystal bullpoop or somethin’? I ain’t very smart when it comes to magic n’ all that, but that’d be real nice to have right now, ya know.” She crouched, trying to make out anything dangerous in the darkness of the cave. She turned the lights on her mining helmet on, but the results didn’t get that much better.

Regardless of how things would turn out, they were in for a rough ride.

  3. Soon enough, the golden-haired Smith and Tinkerer arrived at the scene, clad in her usual clothes and distinctive hat, she looked quite ready to begin the excavation. "Greetings, Miss Ursa!" The white-haired Paladin cheerily waved at Ursa, once a comrade in a Falderen princess rescue quest. Now, they'd be partners once more. "I am doing quite fine. Yep, I am as ready as ever!"

She gestured to the - chipped - sword strapped to her back, "My blade might be dented but it still has some uses. Well, that's why we are here now, yes?" She nodded gingerly as the duo began their journey to the abandoned mine, "Yes, they are called Prism Gems, I tried to mine them before but one exploded on me. You are the expert on this so I'm sure you won't repeat my stupid mistake."

Due to previous experiences, the knight already knew the dangers of exploring Zalra, not just the lurking monsters but the environment itself was against them. If they weren't careful, they could end up joining the cursed landscape as the crystals took over their body. Fortunately, Eldhi found out that healing magic helped to slow down the effect, Illumancy included. It wasn't needed right now as aside from the unnatural chill running down her spine, they were fine.

Moments later, the crystal-infested entrance of a long-vacated mine was visible. There were various mining tools and objects lying around, of course, all covered in crystals. "Hmm, let's tread carefully here." The hisses coming from their boots were a sign to make use of her arcane talents. Eldhi opened her right palm as a soothing golden light washed over both Ursa and herself, keeping their HP up, warding off the crystal sickness, "Have no fear! My light shall keep us safe!" Conveniently, it also served as an additional source of light, joining with Ursa's lightbulb hat thing.

If they weren't in constant danger of being ambushed by monsters or crystallized, this place was actually beautiful, especially now with her divine light shining over the gems, creating seven-colored streaks of light as it passed through them. Regardless, the faster they finish this, the better. "Lead the way, Miss Ursa."

  4. Ursula’s lips curled up as she saw the intricate workings of the whole healing magic spell. That was something none of her inventions and tinker machines could ever reproduce, much to her chagrin. Seeing such a rare gift being used for the good of others was somehow new to her - Ursula bumped on many mages on her wandering, but few did not succumb to the arcane or divine powers. “Ya know, always good to see some mage peeps usin’ that magic thing for a good cause. It’s funny, ‘cause I ran into a lot of trouble because of magic and other Elysid guys.” She commented, wide grin on her face, “I’ll make sure to git a good chunk ol’ orichalcum to git ya some nice shinin’ new weapon, thanks for ye help.”

The blacksmith let out a hearty laugh as Eldhi asked her to lead the way, “Drop the Missy, will ya? I ain’t that old ya know, not yet. Feels wrong to use that shinin’ noble word for a peasant like me, aye.” She tried stepping once more on the cursed and crystallized cave ground, no audible hints of severe infection. “Aye, good to go!” , as they walked, the mixed light sources of her mining helmet and Eldhi’s magic painted the crystallized interior in many colors. “Well now, ain’t this some whole lotta ligh--”

Ursula suddenly stepped back and threw her body to the ground near Eldhi’s feet, instinct biting fiercely on her neck. From the walls, large crystal spikes protruded abnormally towards her previous position, clashing against one another. “Aye, see that? I told ya this place ain’t a big fan of us!” she gritted her teeth, standing up as soon as possible and pickaxe readied in case something else happened. With no movement in sight, her stance loosened just enough one could see her shoulder movement. “Well ‘dis doesn’t look good, Eldhi.” Her eyes shifted to Eldhi, and soon after to the base of the crystal spikes. If one squinted enough at them, it’d be possible to make out the shape of a crystallized human being, almost invisible because of the multitude of color streaks from the light sources used to maintain visibility.

“Ya know, this place is givin’ me the creeps. Not that I dislike it or anythin’.” She inhaled a great deal of air, “Aye, press on!” Ursula pulled back her pickaxe forend handle, reloading the weapon with powdered mana and along with a loud and characteristic ‘k-chak’. With one over head swing, her weapon clashed against the crystals on their way, generating a powerful kinetic blast strong enough to break the crystals and clear the way. “I git the feelin’ we’ll have to kick something’s butt, so be on yer guard.”

Much to their dismay, however, as soon as they progressed further in the orichalcum mine cracks could be heard in the entirety of the cave. Soon after, warped moans echoed throughout the crystal walls, agony clear from the abnormal intonation. From the cracking walls, crystallized humanoids emerged, consumed by the crystallization curse - they were, in fact, not that far from zombies. There were fewer inside, and the quantity coming from behind them increased by the moment, with more and more emerging from the walls.

“Uh, ya know, maybe I ain’t kickin' their butts. Ye see, they’re probably pretty hard because of the crystallization thing, aye?” She kept her back towards Eldhi, weapon in hand. “We goin’ further in, or we gettin' outta here!?” Ursula reloaded the explosive addon again, ready for another attack.

  5. "Ahaha~" The tanned girl blushed at the compliment, one hand rubbing the back of her neck, she could feel her head bloating there. However, a proper knight must remain humble and chivalrous even if they deserved the glory. "I am but a humble servant of Tyl, Miss Ursa, it is my solemn duty to assist others whenever I can." Eldhi pondered, she consciously realized that not all those who possessed arcane powers were responsible with their usage. On the contrary, the tales of mages gripped by power-lust were timeless classics. "I shall endeavor to stay true to my principles." She nodded, "Duly noted, just tell me when we are at the spot, and please, thank you!"

"Ah, uhm..." It was the first time ever since they began the foray that Eldhi had reservations. Ursa was an older figure than her, so it would only be fitting if she called her by a proper title, especially since she was a knight with proper decorum and etiquette. However, there was also the fact that the recipient herself wanted to be called on a first name basis. So... which one should she follow? Guh.. this was confusing. "Hmmm... alright, Mi-... uh... Ursa." In the end, she acquiesced to her wishes just because there were alone. She couldn't guarantee such boldness in a public setting, however.

The pair of female adventurers journeyed deeper into the abandoned mine, nothing of note happened so far except for the ever-present threat of crystal sickness, thankfully staved off by Eldhi's light. "Hmm..." Going by experience, it'd be only a matter of time before something happened. "Wha-?!" True to her instinct, Ursa suddenly dove at her feet, prompting the Paladin to brandish her chipped longsword, the edge glowing with a searing light, somewhat mitigating its damaged state.

Red eyes turned to the protruding crystals as if they were deliberately out to get the Tinkerer. "Then let's be on the lookout." The knight turned serious now, dropping her giggles, "Let's get the mining over with and leave this place post-haste." She fought back a nervous gulp as vague humanoid shapes shone from inside the crystals, they were Zalra's victims. Eldhi was not letting Ursa and herself succumb to the same fate.

"You have an odd sense o-... ahaha, nevermind, yes, let's just go." Moving faster than before, Eldhi kept very close to the tinkerer as she mined through the crystals with apparent ease, Eldhi would have blown herself up a few times there. "Monsters lurking about?" It certainly wouldn't be her first time facing them, first was the crystal Gryphon fought together with Magi Heart and Ashiore, the next was the strange machine-like contraption, and now... "Eh?" she really wished she had a better them for them but... crystal zombies, they were zombies, covered in crystals.

"Uh... I never liked those movies." They weren't even scary as much as they were boring and tedious to watch. "Hmph, a Paladin doesn't shy away from a battle!" Eldhi turned, huffed proudly, then took a few steps forward. "Hyah!!" Instead of closing up to them, Eldhi swung her longsword as she unleashed crescent waves of burning light, striking at the zombies, causing their heavy bodies to lose balance and fall. "Pfft!" Now grounded, their clumsy hardened limbs couldn't get themselves back up. Eldhi just had to keep launching wave after wave as more crystal zombies clanged with the equally crystallized ground. This resulted in the fallen zombies becoming roadblocks for those still behind them.

"Alright~" Eldhi whipped back to Ursa, "Let's continue, shall we?"

  6. Ursula watched with eyebrows perked up as @Eldhi quickly made short work of the enemies that had a clear intention of getting in their way. Perhaps the sin of greed was responsible for awakening and forcing them to walk once more in the world of the living just because of the precious ore inside. “Now ain’t that somethin’, buddy!”, the goldilocks scratched the back of her head slightly unsure of just how to react.

Was that light magic? She pondered in her thoughts for a few moments, wondering if that was the reason their enemies were dealt with so quickly. Imagine if she had a proper sword! The goldsmith was both overjoyed and excited to imagine word of her crafted equipment to run around the world. Newcomers explored and ventured the world just like her, didn’t they? Strangely enough, the enemies that Eldhi quickly disposed of were consumed once more by the crystallization curse, which seemed way more strong this time around, crystals covering the rotting bodies within moments they collapsed to the similarly infested ground.

“Aye, lemme see if I find anything useful over here… Ya don’t mind keepin’ watch, aye?” Ursula gave Eldhi a thumbs up, “Since ye can deal with ‘em easy peasy, I’ll go ahead and try to find some stuff.” She readied her pickaxe and headed straight further inside the mines, “I don’t think more of them are goin’ to show up, but keep yer guard still. If ye need help, gimme a holler, will ya?” Within moments, she was long gone from Eldhi’s sight. However, if Eldhi were to focus, sounds of Ursula’s tools hitting on the crystallized structure could be head. She wasn’t that far away from the paladin. If Eldhi focused her attention on hearing Ursula’s mining, however, she’d soon come to realize that the sounds of cracking and breaking crystals could be heard.

Crystals expanded from their previously defeated enemies, joining the infected zombies with each other, moaning and screams of pain ensued with each forceful fusion. Powerful crashing and cracking could be heard from the powerful crystallized mutation. Eventually, the monster grew big enough to reach the mine’s ceiling. Upon contact, it was promptly assimilated by the monstrosity, ground shaking from the collapse of crystallized walls, large rocks and stalactites raining down on Ursa and Eldhi. All the zombified crystal humanoids shouted and moaned at the same time, generating a warped roar from the huge golem that was at least 20 ft tall.

It raised its crude but powerful right limb on the air, releasing and crashing it with a single downward swing on the Paladin of Tyl. From the looks of it, the creature wasn’t going to let go of the riches inside the cave for nothing. “EAT THIS, YE CRYSTAL POOPER”, Ursula’s voice boomed from inside the mines and a powerful explosion from a swing of her pickaxe ensued as it hit a large crystal falling toward them, repelling most small and medium-sized debris as well. Eventually, the monster’s attack hit the ground generating a powerful shockwave that raised a large amount of dirt inn the air, limiting visibility.

“HEY, ELDHI, YE OKAY!?” The white-haired could hear Ursula’s shouting. Meanwhile, the creature approached them loud steps hissing as they made contact with the ground, every inch of the crystal golem overflowing with the cursed power of Crystallized Zalra.

  7. As the crystallized ground turned on their own 'brethren' so to speak, assimilating the fallen zombies, Eldhi knew the threat was taken care of. Huh, was that it? Easier than she thought. "Sure! I'll catch up in a bit." The Paladin made final checks that everything was a-okay before turning on her heels then went after the blonde Blacksmith, using the clanking sounds of pickaxe against crystals to home in on Ursa's location. They'd get this quest done in a jiffy!

    ...or not.

The ground rumbled and the very air grew heavy as the Paladin's gut instinct blared at her. "...?" Holding back a nervous gulp, Eldhi turned around. Apparently, her check wasn't thorough enough to notice the zombies weren't assimilated into the ground, nay, they were combining with one another, creating a hodgepodge abomination. The towering crystal golem, made from all the vengeful zombies Eldhi angered earlier, lumbered towards the Paladin. "Holy Tyl!" Her gasp was drowned out by its demented roar. What manner of horror had she wrought?

Her tiny - compared to the thing - size and chipped sword couldn't do anything against the beast as it swung down at her, shattering the crystals and creating a shockwave that flung the Paladin like the insect she was. "Guh...!" Her back landed against the hard ground. "Hah... nngh..." Wincing, she checked her status and damn... that one attack took out half of her HP bar! Also, there was a large stalactite about to fall on top of her. That's it, she's dead...

"Nnngh?!" Only to be saved by Ursa's timely intervention. Coughing from all the smoke and debris, the white-haired girl shakily stood up, then examined her sword... her broken sword, yep, it was nothing more than a grip, a hilt, and a quarter of shattered blade. Well, the thing had it coming anyway. "No..." Eldhi mumbled then turned her head at Ursa, a very awkward grin on her tanned features. "I... screw up, didn't I?" They weren't going to fight that thing, nuh uh, she was a brave and courageous Paladin, not a fool. "Let's uh... let's get out of here?!"
