    Reclamation of Rugome Fort

    “Please, brave adventurers, protect our livelihoods and avenge our fallen.”

    It was with those parting words that the adventurers set off down the trail, up a hill, and towards the destitute remnants of Rugome Fort. Situated in a forest clearing, the original intent of the building had been to serve as a guard post centered near various high income villages and towns, but as decades drawled by and those very same villages fell to ruin, the Fort itself no longer had any reason to exist. Troops withdrew, leaving nothing but a hollowed out structure riddled with moss and weeds, once-paved roads reduced to game trails flush with dandelions. As springtime sunlight filtered through the thin canopy above, a crisp breeze passing by green leaves, the tranquility of this centuries-old fort was almost enough to lull the four adventurers into a sense of security and peace.

    Almost, if not for the dark patches that occasionally spotted the verdant terrain. Crusted blood, the iron stench long gone, served as a reminder that this once abandoned fort was no longer bereft of inhabitants. Before the adventurers stood a variety of eroded stone walls, some mere piles of brick, while others as tall and proud as they always had been. In front was a clear path through thick brush, leading to a precariously dilapidated tower, made of the same dreary stone bricks that every other manmade structure had been constructed out of.

    Standing at the threshold, a few steps before the band of valiants truly entered the territory of the ruins, they would have a final moment of combat preparation before the battle truly began.

    Now, how would they proceed?

    As Sean approached the overrun fort with his companions, he motioned for them all to stop a good 10 or so paces away from it. "We need to stay back so they don't see us while we prepare," he whispered. "So I say we have somebody with defensive capabilities take up the middle and draw the attention while our DPS people swing around the side and flank while the enemy's distracted," He explained softly, drawing a rough sketch of what he thought was the fort in the dirt and drawing arrows showing how to move. "I'll flank from the left while Briar moves in at the middle to be our tank. Everybody else will flank from the right." He nodded as he talked, talking a bit slower than usual to make sure everybody knows what he wants them to do.

    After the explanation, Sean brushed away the drawing of the battle plan. "All right, like we discussed." He nodded one last time before moving into Zone 1.

    Lady Briar loved herself some chaos. The thing was, her idea of chaos wasn't the same as a goblin. It was a pain when they were trying to terrorize people she was wanting to 'play with' (i.e. probably do similar, but with less harmful tricks, even if just as mentally scarring). She'd joined the party just to get the gobs off her land. This was, to her, a turf war.

    "I dunno where you get about giving orders," The cat muttered, glaring at @Sean Poteitoku only for a moment before shrugging her shoulders. "But I gotta give ya credit. You're smart to put me front and center~ I'm purrrrrfect at confusing and playing with the foe~"

    With a giggle and a mew, she wandered on ahead. She was going to take the 'middle' as meaning front and center. And, if her job was to draw attention, she'd do it from a safe distance with her magic tricks. She'd been coming up with new ones anyway, after all.

    Cautiously, she continued no to the battle field. Whatever the rest of the team would decide, she knew her task. "I'll make sure to cause plenty of chaos among them~ It will be such fun to put them in their place~"

    Though only partially similar to the plan, she found herself in Zone 2, towards the back but ready to catch the attention of all that might come at them.

    So this was it? A battle against forces inside an abandoned fort. This was his second foray into the frontlines and ever since he managed to train his magic a bit after the war. Though as he heard Sean's plans, he felt it might be a good one. But he needed to add something before he can head off.

    "Good idea. But if we want to pull this off flawlessly, someone needs to attack them first when they are distracted. They may have an advantage even if you took the damage." He then tightened his grip on his grimoire as he stared at the battle plans on the ground. "Also, there might be a chance of ambushes, so I'll try to deal with the back with my Arcana magic. If that's okay with you all." Once that was said and done regardless of their answers, Jace headed off to Zone 3 as planned.

    Seigi was, in a sense, surprised. She had played Terrasphere for quite a while now but honestly hadn't done such a 'classical' quest as 'Beat up Goblins' yet! This was, literally, the embodiment of doing JUSTICE. Beat up evil creatures of evilness for the... good! It was only recently that a particular person called the girl out for her actions and what she believed in. That Seigi had wavered back then had already been bad enough... now, however, she wouldn't let anyone ever again get so personal with her. Games are supposed to be fun!

    Listening to the red-head, Seigi nodded. "Yesyes I am listening. We're doing JUSTICE..." Giving a glance towards the chaotic kitten. "... and get done with it! They're just goblins! We're the good guys. The good ones always win! These vile creatures of evilness will tremble in front of my..." Seigi now pulled out some weird arm contraption, a... Gauntlet thing, before needing a good few seconds putting it on. Her entire lower arm was now covered with this weird piece of armor...weapon? "SEIGI POWER PUNCH!" With that, Seigi punched forward.

    It took a second or two as the contraption itself went to work: Releasing some sort of mechanism that allowed a piece of metal, stuck at the upper end of the weapon, to press forward. Making contact with the actual gauntlet-part itself which resulted in a sort of second, more powerful, 'punch'. It kinda worked like how a crossbow fired a bolt.

    Right, the Hero needed to adjust it a bit, not to mention manually pulling back the mechanism. "They won't even know what hit them!" The girl whispered to herself in anticipation before adding. "Gotta think of a cooler name though!" Her 'prototype' weapon was called Final Judgement, after all.

    Putting on an actual second one of these hideous gauntlet things, Seigi actually followed the plan and moved to Zone 3! So much for a glorious advance.

    img A group of adventurers had gathered together right next to a old abandoned fort... well abandoned by humans anyway. Among them was a flame haired swordsman, a cat girl who had a dangerous aura to her, a average joe, and supposedly two others who had yet to arrive.

    There was one other who was here though and she was pretty basic as well actually. A girl with a cold expression that belied her 'cute' hair style. A scarf around her neck and a outfit one might expect of a simple merchant or traveler NPC, not a player warrior or mage. Her dark jacket was fully buttoned and her arms were folded in a relaxed way. Chelsea was Lady N in this game, yet she was still far from what she was imagining Lady N to be. So... she was just the mystery girl party member for now.

    "The best strategy against little green men is to outsmart them and let them fall over themselves. I don't think this will be very difficult if it's...."

    Chelsea almost called it a quest in a way that would make her seem to be a player. She would rather leave that anonymous for now. If they figured that out, good for them.

    "Stick close together and let the limitations of the enemy make itself obvious. Until they do something it really doesn't matter what we do. It's not like you are all professionals yet correct?"

    Hopefully this approach would be taken seriously. If too many "CHARGE!" types were here... well just boo then. She would move to Zone 2.

    Reclamation of Rugome Fort

    With strategies exchanged, weapons readied, resolve steeled, the band of adventurers plunged into the territory of the ruined Fort, spread out lopsidedly with the majority of their forces favoring the right side. But it was all according to the flame haired swordsman’s plan, as he himself sought glory in solitude, planning a pincer attack carried out by a single sword and the fire of his soul. On this side, the ruined walls were taller and in better condition, a perfect opportunity for an unseen approach.

    The two ladies, on the other hand, remained brazen despite both their caution. Wading through the thick grass, the cat eared speargirl and her emotionless companion cut a swath through the waist-deep undergrowth, their relatively short statures working against them in this case. God knows how many creepy crawlers were hidden underneath…but perhaps those facts weren’t worth thinking about. Not when the possibility of traps or other, more deadly surprises were a factor when going down the central path.

    Thankfully for those on the right wing, their path wasn’t impeded by vegetation at all, only the occasional pile of rubble from a collapsed wall. With the ever energetic Seigi taking the vanguard, they stepped past, over, and around an assortment of rubble, occasional detours required in order to take a forward path. A simple enough trek, yes, but on barren, stony ground, hidden neither by walls nor vegetation, they were exposed.

    Two glints twinkled atop the far off tower, only an instant allowed for the astute to react, before twin arrows flew through the air, striking the lightly armored @Jace Vale . One shaft buried itself deep in his left shoulder, while the other grazed against his right flank, missing @Wally Bertrand 's foot by mere inches. Against the backdrop of the azure sky, two green skinned creatures cackled loudly, hurling sharp abuse at the far off adventurers.

    Scarlet drops stained the cobblestone path, as the battle began in earnest.

    Cycle 1
    Battle Conditions

    [IMG]

    Zone 11 - 2 Goblin Archer A [150/150]
    Zone 11 - 2 Goblin Archer B [150/150]
    @Jace Vale receives 40 HP damage from two attacks.

    Zone 11 - 2 The top of the ruined tower. Ranged attacks targetting those in this zone receive a -20 penalty, unless it is a Geomancy or an Aeromancy attack.
    Zone 11 - 1 The bottom of the ruined tower. Roll a d100 and add +5 for every tier of either Hunting, Tinker, or Rogue if you enter this area.
    Zone 2, 5, 8 Tall, wild grass, waist deep if you're short. Roll a d100 and add +5 for every tier of either Hunting, Mobility, or Rogue if you enter this area.
    Zone 1, 4, 10 Short, grassy terrain with short, half-crumbled walls. Ranged attacks targetting those in this zone receive a -10 penalty, unless it is a Geomancy or an Aeromancy attack.
    Zone 7 A tall, intact wall stands up and out. Ranged attacks can not target those in this zone unless it is a Geomancy or an Aeromancy attack.
    Zone 3, 6, 9, 12 Piles of rubble from toppled over walls and structures fill the area. A treacherous path if you recklessly advance.

    Movement Every turn, you may move to one Zone adjacent to your current one for free. You may also spend your action for this round and move to another Zone after your free movement. Ending your turn on certain Zones may trigger events.

    Range Ranged and Magical attacks can reach any zone. Melee attacks can only target those within the same Zone as the attacker. Tinker can be used to either add additional modifiers to melee attacks, acting similarly to Berserk, Hunting, and Dual Wielding, or be used to temporarily change a melee master into a ranged attack.

    Actions
    Everyone is allowed to perform one of these actions per cycle. RP-wise, you can do a number of things, but the system only counts the action you pick from the spreadsheets.
    • Tank - Protect allies, disrupt enemies, and mitigate zonal damage.
    • DPS - Damage, damage, and more damage.
    • Support - Heal, buff, and dispel conditions from allies.
    Feats are special actions that can be performed at the cost of one's HP. These are to signal truly desperate times, and outside of Strenuous Effort, can only be used once per Challenge.

    Strenuous Effort By permanently sacrificing HP (reduce both your current HP value and your maximum HP value), you can gain a bonus modifier to your roll equal to the amount of HP spent. This modifier can not be applied to Buff rolls.

    Soul Filled Strike This is the climax, the final clash. Offer up your heart in exchange for godly strength and ensure that your nemesis falls. Roll a d100. If your result is 70 or below, you die. If your result is 71 or above, your HP is set to 1. Your next attack is (100 + modifiers + buffs) x 2.

    Bravery's Gift You swore to yourself once that you will never see a friend fall, and now, it's time to fulfill that promise, even at the cost of your own. This Feat can be used retroactively. Usage of Second Wind is sealed. In place of a maximum of five others, take two times the damage they would have taken during this turn.

    The Last Prayer If there is Divinity that watches upon, then with your earthly desires, pull them down from their lofty throne and force a miracle out of them. Select three targets and give each of them the following: a single target attack buff lasting three turns, a single target heal, and the removal of all debuffs. At the end of this turn, you die.

    Death caused directly by the usage of a Feat can not be overturned with a Ressurection spell.

    Though she wasn't one to take orders easily, Lady Briar took some of the words to heart- or, at the very least, she followed them whether she'd been listening or not. Standing her ground inches in front of Lady N, probably about as far ahead as she was taller.

    In her mind, she was still snickering, though no longer about the battle. She hadn't noticed until now, but the young lady looked awfully familiar to someone she'd met, just once, in real life. She had an eye for details, after all. Still, the cat decided not to taunt the girl for the time being.

    It took her some time to choose which of her usual spells to use- she'd been working on more complex ones, but for now, the basics should be enough to scare their enemies just so. She chanted, still wondering just how lucky it had been she chose a magic that let her cause hallucinations- which, somehow, let her tank when she was otherwise only good at poking with a stick.

    Hugging her lance, she shouted her spell, a slight purplish-blue light taking root around the goblins, particularly their heads. "That should keep them busy a while. Let's see how they like their televisions staticky~" She purred, snuggling closer to her weapon. Oh, how she loved playing tricks on hopeless prey!

    As Sean maneuvered through the left side of the battleground, he noticed a small detail about the goblin archers. They're atop a large object. If I hit them with some fire magic, maybe I can knock them off the tower, he pondered as he noticed one of the goblins get hit by some magic. So somebody has the same idea as me, he examined. After thinking for just under a second, Sean pointed his palm at the goblin who had not been hit by magic. “Burn!” he yelled, sending a small bolt of fire from his hand hurtling in their direction while moving forward a bit bracing for a barrage of arrows in his direction.

    The messy, crumpled grass gives way to higher ground, to decrepit shells of buildings that were now slain corpses in their own right. Breath.. And he took another breath, and another.. Oh. It was best not to hyperventilate, right? His vision hung over the edge of a trail cleared out by past footfalls, thinning and disappearing when the piles were themselves too thick. He’d just been running. Dazed by experiencing a near miss and the sight of what might have happened to him if he’d been just a hair closer to the point of the arrow.

    Wally was only stranded by his thoughts, and so he resolved to clear them. He couldn’t manage much at this stage, but, well. He grasped at the fabric of his starter outfit and straightened his back to look out at the warfare before him. What to say? He hadn’t really thought about it. But he picked through his mind, thumbing through the files and patting out the papers. Ah. There.

    Now.. On the topic of targets. He’d followed that redhead’s plan so far, so him. Yes. He ticked him off the list with the hope that with his focus he could reach @Sean Poteitoku from afar. There was closer, of course. The duo that had split off to one of the other zones. He chose at random. It was just a little pick me up after all. He came up with likewise human of the two - @Lady N , another, but not the last. Wally turned to those advancing in front. That one was still injured, no doubt. So he spent the remainder on @Jace Vale and finally leveled his breath. Quickly, now. Before it was too late to catch up.

    A clear voice rises to the farthest reaches of the battlefield, carrying with it promised magic to empower.

    img So everyone was just going to split up and toss projectiles? Fine if that's what worked. Also... who was that super excitable blonde? She really looked like someone. Or was it more she just had that same 'gusto'? Chelsea could not help but eye her for awhile. Well one thing was for sure. So much for not having a highly aggressive set of companions here. They were all pretty gungho right now. Chelsea turned away from Seigi just in time to see arrows flying at Jace, the really average looking member. His health was dropping pretty fast according to her investigation mode. He had no source of healing either. She followed the trail of the arrows with her eyes.

    "Goblins... with arrows? Little green men regardless. Hmph! Lady N's turn now fairy tale boogie men. Let's see now..."

    Indeed she was sounding even annoying to herself. Surely she will never be gotten oto close to by these people that way. Time to give a small test of herself now. Even with her weak options. She still had a crucial thing... her brain and... her tech! Without a weapon that might be difficult though...

    "I'm going ahead. The enemy is just going to keep shooting at us if we sit here. The tall grass isn't pleasant but... hmmm."

    She ducked low and began to make her way through the grass being sure to keep her head under the foliage according to her investigation mode scan there was a good area for arrow safety nearby. She decided to try it and use it as a base for her to figure out how she could attack from so far away. Did tinker... allow her to just generate tools? That would be pretty cool even Cheslea had to admit. If her plan succeeded she would meet up with the flame haired Sean shortly. Better to be near a wall than a bug filled grass field.

    As the colorful group went on their way it didn't take all too long until, suddenly, arrows started flying. Hitting the guy who originally wanted to be Seigi's mentor! They came... from this big tower, huh? That was actually pretty smart! Weren't Goblins supposed to be stupid, or something?

    Nonetheless! This already looked like a lot of fun. "Hahahaha!" The hero girl laughed before yelling out. "Don't worry, Jayce..." That was his name, right? "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger!" One of Seigi's bestest pieces of wisdom and all.

    That said, the girl couldn't just keep standing here. No, she actually had to do something! Maybe use her weird Rocket-Launcher thing? But... she wanted to try out these fists of hers! And the tower was a way smaller target than the gigantic angel, so putting a rope around herself to basically close the distance could end up badly. Even if it seemed super fun.

    No. Today, Seigi simply wanted to punch things. Real hard. Punching was always good. So forward it was! Now, despite her ballsy attitude though, Seigi played enough games, like the Dark Borne series, that a blind charge would bring her nowhere! Outside of that one particular game, JRPGs tended to be way harder than that boring western crap anyways.

    This wasn't even about strategy or anything, really. It was simply... obvious? That a big object in the path of the arrows would protect her! Then again the Archers did seem rather...occupied... all of the sudden thanks to the heroic chaos kitten's magic? Whatever, now, what would be actual thinking was the consideration that the Goblins wanted them there! BUT too much thinking took out all the fun.

    With her course of action set, Seigi simply dashed across the battlefield, dancing through Zone 5 right into Zone 7 where another girl was already waiting! She looked quite familiar... right? Eh, whatever. No time for that. Seigi was grinning from one end of the ear to the other. "Hehehe... I can't wait to punch things, heroically!"

    While he was able to prepare himself as they entered the fort, he wasn't a good strategist so far. Just countering an ambush sounded very contradicting, but it was an only idea he had so far that he had to feel helpful. Also, he was already aware of his lack of defense due to his choice of armor. Because of this, he gritted his teeth as he felt the pain of two arrows piercing through his body. Not even @Seigi's advice was helping him for the moment.

    However, to his relief, @Wally Bertrand responded to this with a musical buff on him. Sure, he wished for a healing spell, but it was good enough for me. Considering the whole area around him, he knew running into another zone would be unwise. At least he was a sorcerer and not a warrior. "I guess it's time to start the battle." Opening his grimoire, he flipped the pages to his desired spell before aiming his hand at one of his attackers. "Spiritus, release!"

    With a ball of mana, he fired it to the Goblin Archers without any hesitation. And thanks to Wally's buff to him, the ball was larger than his usual one, hoping it would deal a huge damage.

    Reclamation of Rugome Fort

    The revelry of the goblin archers was short lived as the adventurers returned fire, sending magical fury up the fortified tower. Ducking under cover as a bolt of flame smashed into gray battlement, Argus screeched as his woolen crotch cover was lit ablaze, the green skinned monster scampering up and down while trying desperately to put out the pyromancy induced conflagration. Rushing over to his brother’s aid, Beezus dropped his crossbow to the side, scaly hands smacking at the burning rag as well.

    Suddenly, however, the goblin screeched in horror as his vision twisted, malformed, inexplicable fuzziness overcoming his senses as he stumbled away, clutching at its head. Something else was invading it, something else was c-

    His left foot slipped over the broken edge of battlement, the fangs of gravity claiming his body as Beezus...

    Argus

    Nisssa!

    Lunging forward, the brave brother of Beezus reached out, grabbing onto the archer’s foot. Another bolt, this time purely magical, smashed into his back, eliciting a cry of pain through grit fangs. But despite the agony, he didn’t let go.

    img
    Beezus

    Argus

    Yadda!

    Blood dripped off his back while the stench of charred flesh pervaded the air, but slowly, Argus pulled his brother up, both of them panting from exertion as the adventurers advanced down below. The fight wasn’t over yet. They still had much more to do! Beady eyes glistening with hatred, Beezus tracked the movements of those ugly, pale fleshed humans before curling his teeth and letting out a furious scream.

    With that, the twin archer bros picked up their bows once more, unleashing a salvo upon their targets, before Beezus bravely stood before his comrade, his friend, ready to protect him from the next magical assault.

    He’ll never lose another sibling to these flesh apes again.

    ~~~
    A chill raced up the spine of Lady N as she dashed through the thick undergrowth, adrenaline pulsating through her veins so thickly that the pinprick of a small blade hidden in the grass didn’t even register. Pressed against the tall wall that hid her from the gaze of the archers, the twintailed lady was joined by the hero of justice as well, both of them preparing their next step from there.
    But that chill that had passed up her spine wasn’t without good reason, and humans weren’t the only ones who understood how walls could be used as cover, both from singing arrows and from prying eyes.
    The heady smell of unwashed bodies had been noted too late by the two girls, as two thickly built goblins ran out from two ends of the tall wall, bearing spiked clubs. Their bodies more scar tissue than flesh, they were almost the same size as the two girls, an extraordinary height for mere goblins.
    Ah, it made sense, after all. With many days to fortify their position, there was no way the goblins wouldn’t have noticed a blind spot in the defenses of their crossbowmen.
    Two spiked maces smashed into the less armored of the two, @Seigi , the powerful blow sending her into the wall that once served as cover. Now, it simply obstructed their methods of escaping easily, and that made the Goblin Bashers very, very happy.
