    The Laughing Cat

As you enter through the open door, you can't help but notice @Cynesiege standing idly by, the joyous man unnaturally still. You would've gestured for him to follow but, alas, the door slammed shut, moved by some metaphysical force that none of you were aware of. Unknown to all of you, the man had disconnected from the game and was kicked out the dungeon. Regardless, before any of you had time to think about your predicament or properly analyze the room, a purple shadow jumped down from up top (in what was supposedly the ceiling) and landed with a practiced grace. The situation clicked after a few seconds and you notice that someone familiar had appeared in front of you. The cloaked creature smirked, its white, toothy smile ever apparent from underneath the shadows of his cowl. It lifted its hand and gave a mocking, slow clap yet, despite its relaxed action and calm greeting, its shoulders were tense and its omnipresent grin seemed to dim, looking more like the gritting of teeth rather than a display of no animosity.

"Congratulations. You failed Luna's puzzle and that shining knight in armor of yours is dead."

He gave a mocking bow, lifting one hand over the room as if it were a spectacle and he was introducing the locale to paying tourists. You feel an unsettling sense of omen in the pit of your stomach as the creature in front of you stayed still, not moving from his position. It lasted for a few tense moments before, with its head down and shrouded, it jumped up into the air, floating and staring down straight into your eyes. It gave a borderline mischievous and malicious smirk before it disappeared. Its words lingered in the air.

"Solve this one. She was proud of this puzzle."

You couldn't help but notice an air of frustration in his tone but, as he disappeared, your attention drifted away to the room. It was an eerie room but it looked nigh-identical to the last. There were, however, a few peculiar differences. The rabbit, despite being obviously made by the same mechanic, seemed to be connected to no wires or electricity. If you checked it, you would also find to slot for batteries. The eyes were conductive and the paint layer was still a polished white color (albeit with a few harder edges here and there). The way it had lasted that long in that condition was a marvel and a remarkable anomaly. Unlike the last rabbit, it seemed like someone had cared for it manually.

You approach to investigate the rabbit further, only to find another note in a rainbow of crayons.

"My name is the Delirious Rabbit.
    I'm sixteen years old.
    Solve this puzzle:
    4:21 ... 5:27 ... 6:32 ... ___"

Unlike the previous puzzle, there was no selection and the only tool available to you would be the decorative rabbit that stood there, staring. Maybe it was just the game or your gut instinct, but you knew you'd only have one try.

  6. Beatle walked passed the idled Cyn, unaware of his absence until right after the door closed. As the little creature confirmed his suspicion, Beatle grew concerned. It was going to be rough enough already, being a group made randomly and having little concept of what each other's capabilities were. Now, they were without a tank (arguably the most important role in a dungeon), so if and when a combat situation arises, they'll have to be quick on their feet.

"If it's just two healers and two DPS, this may be doable still..." Beatle thought to himself, squinting at the new puzzle before them but not really looking at it. "So long as our dps' hold the aggro of anything we fight, Magi and I should be able to keep us all alive. Hopefully we don't have to fight anything too big... who am I kidding. It's a dungeon."

At that, Beatle sighed, and actually began looking over the new puzzle. It involved less objects, which you'd think would make it easier, but actually provided quite a challenge to decipher. After staring at the crayon handwriting for what felt like hours and doing some mental calculations, Beatle arrived at his conclusion and opened his menu.

The remaining party members would receive a message from Beatle the Bard. Inside the message was simply (7:36) without any explanation to his conclusion, simply because Beatle didnt feel like typing it all out.

"If I'm not mistaken, it's just following a number pattern. The hour increases steadily by one each time, leading to the 7. The gap between the minute side changed as the series continued, decreasing in distance at a rate of 1. Therefore, the first minute gap was 6, the second was 5, so the third must be 4. 4+32=36. Hence, 7:36. Hopefully puzzles are the biggest concern in this dungeon, because not being able to say stuff like that to people is gonna really suck in battle..."

To the group, it appeared that Beatle's lips were moving, giving off the look of someone talking under their breath. He inspected the Bunny thoroughly as he muttered inaudibly, searching for a power source.

  7. Grimacing at the immobile Cynsiege Roland tried to shift past his large frame walking into the room before him. He was hoping the large man would prove a more suitable tank, and take the lead but it seemed Roland would be forced into the position instead. Even worse as they all entered the room, the door behind them slammed shut with a thud leaving the man stranded behind. Roland rushed towards the door in an attempt to break it down before his actions were interrupted by the mysterious figure that had been tailing them this entire time.

"Congratulations. You failed Luna's puzzle and that shining knight in armor of yours is dead."

“Knight?” Roland thought, the gears spinning in his head as he quickly jumped to conclusions. As the creature continue its taunting, he called out, “What did you do to Cynsiege?” The mysterious entity, of course, disappeared as it normally did leaving them with yet another puzzle to solve. Roland’s mind, however, was elsewhere as he tried to push pieces of the tidbits the monster spoke of together, mumbling softly to himself in deep thought, “Failed test, shinning knight, sixteen year old girl, rabbits, and skulls. Who was that note addressed too? Luna? Is it the same one that left this puzzle?” Roland peered at the note the rabbit held, ignoring the numbers at the bottom, and focusing on the words preceding it, “Delirious rabbit. What was the previous one? Heccabit…. A failed test”?

Roland began to pace back and forth within the room as a storm brewing on his face as he tried to decipher what the monster was referring too. “Did we fail the previous test?” he asked himself out loud, “The answer seemed right, and there was some sort of a reward as a result. So what test was failed, and who failed it? Luna? No, she seemed to be the one who set up the puzzle room at we're in, but who, the shining knight? Was the creature not referring to Cyn, but rather someone else that we have yet to meet?” He scratched his chin as his rambling thoughts failed to coalesce into a sensible order. With a deep sigh he looked at the numbers resigning himself to the puzzle at hand.

The numbers were some sort of a sequence, leaping off from the theme of time from before. As far as he could tell the rabbit was the only thing worth interacting with inside the room, meaning they had to deliver the next number into the sequence into it. Considering the last room, and the fact that the sequence was digitized time, they’d likely just need to move the rabbits arms into the analog position that the next number would land at. The question became what should the rabbit’s arms be turned too.

As if Roland had been explaining his thoughts out loud, Bard messaged the party, “7:36”. Roland glanced at the numbers with that number in hand. His gut instinct was that they were just a sequence of adding an hour and six minutes, but the math quickly proved this wrong. He glanced at the Bard taking in his silent companion with simple curiosity. His chin was up high and his expression seemed stable, clearly he believed his answer, and with a thankful nod Roland responded, “Well you seem confident enough. I say we move the rabbits arms to that time and see what happens, unless someone has a suggestion.”

Roland looked around for any complaints or suggestions. Unless someone argued with the idea, he’d move the rabbit’s arm’s himself. That said, he’d ask that everyone try and move to the opposite side of the room as he tried, if things went poorly they couldn’t afford to lose anyone else and he was the best geared to handle most situations. In the meantime he picked up a small pebble from the ground, if he saw that creature again he'd try and toss the pebble at it, and try to see if it was a physical manifestation or not.

  8. Magi Heart wasn't sure what to do. The doors had shut and left the loud voiced knight guy outside. Then the creepy kitty said he was dead! Was that true? Magi Heart was also not too sure about all of these puzzles anymore. After all if they failed the first one then these were probably all trick questions or something mean like that. Would a game do that though? Weren't they here to accomplish a quest and have fun? Wendy really wanted to do better so she tried to solve this one too. Hopefully one of her companions would get them through this.

"Uh.... I guess? I hope it's not another weird trick question like last time."

Magi Heart was probably looking pretty stupid as she tried to make sense of what The quiet bard was saying in his message. She wasn't too sure but decided to go with it. The part where it said it was 16 years old bothered her but while she was good at Ultimate Candy Storm Revolution, she was not so good at this kind of thing. She nods to everyone and waited to see what would happen. Hopefully nothing else bad. She hoped that the knight guy, C, was okay.

  9. The cat creature showed up again leaving Ortix rather unsurprised. He now assumed the cat would show up at the start of every challenge or puzzle. But to think, they failed the last puzzle? What did they do wrong? They had gotten the key to the next room but still failed? Ortix was heavily confused by the creature's words, and now another puzzle gave him something else to think about. He observed the party's tank beside him motionless. Ortix assumed he was deep in thought about the puzzle and chose not to question him. The rabbit who gave them their next riddle seemed in pristine condition compared to the last, it also seemed to have a more modern wireless design. Regardless, it still administered a piece of paper with the riddle on it. Ortix noticed there wasn't any place to put the groups response though. The only explanations he could come up with is that the rabbit was voice activated or they had to put their answer on the note and give it back to the rabbit. Ortix sat in thought about the difference between each of the times. Between the first and second time, there was an hour and six minutes. Between the second and third, there was an hour and five minutes between. The next time, if the pattern persisted, should be one hour and 4 minutes from the third time. This time would be 7:36, the same time the bard messaged in chat. Next, the swordsman, Roland spoke up about how to input the answer. Ortix hadn't considered this method yet and decided to voice his opinions.

"Okay, so I agree with the bards answer as I came to the same conclusion, also I have two suggestions to try before we go twisting the rabbits arms. First, we say the answer aloud to the rabbit and see if it's voice activated. Second, we write the answer in the blank on the piece of paper and see if we can input that into the rabbit. If neither of those work, we can fiddle with the rabbit.

Had you ever felt true fear before? The feeling of a bitter cold overtaking your senses? The feeling of clammy, sweaty skin and bitten lips that have been peeled raw to reveal the pink flesh underneath? The fear the makes your hands crawl up your neck and scratch. The fear that freezes you in your place, not because of fright or flight instinct, but because you know you can't do anything to change your fate. That fear that you could only feel when you're absolutely certain that your demise may come sooner rather than later.

The answer had been chosen. The verdict was decided. The Delirious Rabbit's clock-hands ticked back and forth, whirling without prompt until it finally settled at 7:36. At the precise moment that it did so, there was a horrifying beep which resounded. It was like the ticking clock to your death; the sounds of impending doom that would befall you all.

Suddenly, despite the expectation of something of the like happening, you all fell victim to a static discharge which rippled from the rabbit's base, crackling as it made its way and danced up from your toes through your spine and cheeks. The distinct smell of burning and smoke was there as the shock-waves continued, never stopping as you all fell over, shaking and spasming uncontrollably as the electricity rolled through your veins. Your health bar ticked down.

    90%
    The ground began to crack.

    80%
The sound of a mischievous chuckle could be heard.

    70%
You could hear your companions' screams.

    60%
Oddly, you could hear the sound of trickling water underneath you.

    50%
You wonder how death feels like.

    40%
You could hear roars and guttural, inhuman groans.

    30%
You convulse, foaming at the mouth...

    And then it stops.

The lightning stops coursing through the ground. The rabbit stops conducting electricity, playing a symphony of individual screams. The sound of charred flesh could be masked by the salty sea smell. You feel water pooling against your body, slowly making its way up. The ground dividing you and the Delirious Rabbit was destroyed, the marbled floors having been weakened with age and withered to the point where the electricity-generating rabbit could shatter through the panels and invite whatever was underneath.

Your eyes focus and a shadow rises from above the ground. A sea dragon, a leviathan, a creature beyond imagination had risen above the rising sea level. If one paid close attention to the rabbit, they'd notice that it had unscrewed itself from the ground, floating with a golden key behind the behemoth which confronted the team...

  11. Roland wasn’t sure what had caused the machine to start to move on its own. Had they said something wrong? Did someone do something he did not notice? He guessed it didn’t matter, now that he was immobile. Without warning the floor had been covered in a static field, shocking him and sending him to the ground as if he had been tazed. Roland tried to roll and look at his teammates but instead only his eyes rolled into the back of his head, leaving him in darkness aside from his health bar that he saw slowly deplete. For a brief few moments he thought he was the only one effected, until he heard their screams. After this, his mind ceased to function as it was consumed by overwhelming agony while time crept slowly on by.

Without warning the electricity trap ended leaving them all gasping for air as a pool of water began to slowly collect underneath them. Roland took the moment to compose himself, lodging one of his swords into the ground beneath him, and pushing himself up off of it. His muscles strained against the motion, still in pain, and a quick glance at his health bar explained why, it showed red at the 30% mark. Quickly he glanced at the party’s health, and sure enough each of their health read relatively the same. “It would be bad if we were attacked right now.” Roland thought as he noticed the pool of water reaching his ankles.

Much to his dismay, he quickly realized what was happening, the room wasn’t done with them yet. Obviously they still needed a way forward, one that wasn’t readily apparent. Roland quickly scanned the room looking for another door much like the one hidden in the last room, and in doing so he saw the serpent rise before him. The fish monster was massive, far larger than anything he had fought at this point, and he immediately regretted losing the giant man who had accompanied them before. As the monster entered the area he continued to scan for more clues, knowing he was running short on time, quickly spotting the floating key as a glimmer of a plan began to enter his mind.

Swiftly he bellowed a series of commands, hoping that each of his teammates would follow his advice, “Ortix, get that key and find the door to use it on! Bard, get the party healed! Magi if you can do something about the water, do it! Otherwise focus on keeping me alive while I distract this thing”. With that he rushed forward unsheathing both of his blades in one smooth action. For his plan to work he’d need to distract the beast long enough for them to get out of the room, if they could fight this thing out of water they’d stand a chance. Luckily, he had built his character to be able to do just that.

With the dual wielding style, he could effectively have two moves with his swords in a single turn, his plan was to utilize that to taunt the beast with an attack, and defend at the same time. Wasting no more time he approached the creature at moderate pace while screaming incoherently at it “HEEEEEYYY!! AHHHHHHH!” Hoping that was enough to get its attention Roland thrust his first blade forward in a clean arc aiming for its chest, but knowing the water would likely prevent it from every connecting. He then prepared his second blade to help parry/block what he hoped would be the creatures counter attack being aimed at him. There was no way he could bring the beast down on his own, he’d have to rely on the others.

  12. Beatle watched anxiously as the bunny's hands moved, almost not breathing after they landed on the time he'd sent to the group. It was silent for but a moment, though Beatle could've sworn it was an hour. Then, the Beep resounded through the room, and the only thing on Beatle's mind was a single word that described both his fear, anxiety, and acceptance of his failure.

    "Fuck."

Suddenly, pain. Pain unlike anything Beatle had ever felt in his life. His body seized up, taking away his control and twitching uncontrollably. His mouth was wide open in an attempt to howl in pain, but no sound escaped his lips. Perhaps that was the most terrifying part. No matter how hard he tried, he was denied the sweet relief that a cry of agony does provide. Instead, he was forced to suffer in silence, and was unable to close his mouth either. He heard the piercing screams of his allies, and felt a sense of guilt mixed in with the pain.

Just as Beatle began to plead for the sweet release of death, the pain stopped. No rhyme or reason to it. It left as fast as it came, and before Beatle could even catch his breath, the room began to fill with water. Beatle stumbled and collapsed into the water, lost in a daze of his thoughts.

"T-t-tha-that.... that felt like.... like I was going to die. Is it because of how lifelike this game is? Wh... what happens if..... if I die in this game?"

Beatle's mind raced. Images of fake newspapers with headlines reading "Thousands Die After Playing A Shadily-Dealt VR Game!" Pictures of his real body lying in the bed he was in now, without a pulse.

"I... I don't wanna die...." He muttered to himself, right as a Leviathan arose from the water. The creature towered above all of them, massive and terrifying. Beatle stared at the creature, jaw slack and eyes glazed over slightly. In front of him, Beatle saw Roland stand and shout something, but Beatle was too stunned to focus on the words. He simply watched as Roland began to not only move, but attack the creature.

"What... what's he...." Beatle couldn't even complete his own thoughts. There was simply too much information. He wanted nothing more than to just run, hide, and live. "We can't kill that thing... Were all so close to death already... is this the end? Why did I think I could solve that STUPID PUZZ-....."

A flash of gold caught Beatle's attention. "A... Key?" The rabbit that had so cruelly shocked them was floating behind the creature with the key they needed to escape. This jump-started the gears in Beatle's brain forcing them into working overdrive.

"Im not dying here," He muttered, standing up and facing the creature head on. He grabbed his guitar and, holding it tightly, repeated himself, this time a little more forcefully. "Im not Dying Here. Im not dying here. IM NOT DYING HERE!"

Beatle strummed his guitar to activate the Muse mechanic, and began playing as if his life depended on it, desperately trying to restore his comrades health bars. Attacking would be useless, and Beatle was pretty sure he couldn't take a hit, but he was determined to do what he could to ensure the group's survival.

  13. Ortix watched the rabbits hands moved, only half confident. Could such simple logic really give them the answer they were looking for? Suddenly a fiery stinging sensation came over the party causing Ortix and the others to drop to the ground. His body turned stiff and it became harder and harder to move. His body refused to listen to him as he could only writhe in pain. He and the rest laid shaking on the ground, letting off steam as the water content in their virtual bodies turned gaseous. When they were on the verge of death, it stopped. All was silent except the trickle of water. The only thing able to permeate the pain was cooling water that now lapped against the downed party's sides. Ortix was sure the pain was causing him to hallucinate; he could smell the ocean. When he finally got his eyes to open he realized that this was no hallucination. He picked himself up off the flooded ground which was partially destroyed. To his surprise he could move just as well as before the group was damaged, however the pain felt real and his health bar's status proved it. While he regained himself, he noticed bubbles from underneath the area where the ground used to be. Upon a closer inspection, there were a pair of eyes glowing fiercely and headed his way. With an eruption of water, the creature was here. It looked something like the Loch Ness monster except with a radiant blue color and far superior ferocity. In the heat of it all, one thing managed to get through to Ortix, a single order barked to him from Roland. As if it was his own idea, he repeated it to himself.

"Get the key, get the key, get- THE KEY!" The key glimmered in Ortix's eyes like it was trying to draw his attention to it. Without an ounce of hesitation in him now, he made a blitz for the key and dove into the water. Dual-mindedly, Ortix focused one eye on the key and the other on the beast before him. He swam feverishly forward at the key while keeping a slight distance between him and the oceanic hulk. Not wanting to leave all the work on his teammates, he swung wildly at the beast and kept swimming towards the prize. The water whirled around with a force no weaker than a riptide. The Leviathan's array of fins stirred the water violently making it infinitely more difficult to traverse, nonetheless, Ortix pushed on. Miniature waves relentlessly washed against his face and invaded his orifices. The taste of seawater, snot, and blood filled his mouth as he clenched his teeth trying to resist the pull of the water. A soothing song from the party's bard seemed to be the only thing that kept him going. After what seemed like an eternity, Ortix was in reach of the key now. He frantically grasped at it with his one free hand.

  14. Magi Heart screams as she is being drowned. The virtual reality was mimicking it very well as the lightning surged though her body with her face still in the water as it rose up. This game may not be really meant for kids was it? Her head was pounding and her heart acing. The shock finally subsided and she pulled herself up. Seeing that the water was rising with her. Her short height was not ideal for this kind of thing actually.

Her eyes widened as tried to regain composure. It was just a game Wendy, just a game. She's a practicing heroine, a magical girl in training! She can do it! Magi had to keep at it.... that was until a giant serpent rose out of the water and hovered in the sky above her. A large drop fell by her forehead as the skin around her eyes and nose went blue. Really? This was just mean....

Music was playing all of a sudden. The bard guy! She felt her health improving slowly, maybe she should help. It looked like everyone was moving quickly and shouting, it was for good reason but she did not know how to handle all of this. Uh...

She focused on her healing if she and the bard both healed together. Maybe they could handle whatever the monster threw at them? She would have to a AOE to ensure that the everyone 's fallen health gets out of the red. Magi Heart could only hope that her Illumancy was high enough to make the healing effective. She never used it in actual battle yet....

    "Pink Heart Power! Love spread!"

Hearts of healing popped into existence and a pink hue would fill the area. The little hearts would rush to each party member and upon touching them would burst with pink sparkles. Healing each of her allies for whatever health her hearts good give them.

    PAUSE

You sigh in relief as you feel your wounds heal and knit together. You all came to the consensus that you all could not defeat the Leviathan in your current states. The impossibility of the fact was made clear and apparent as the Leviathan lashed out, brutally slamming its spiny tail against Roland, cracking one of his swords. The whiplash sent Magi flying, the poor girl distracted in her decision to heal the party. You watched, helplessly, as Ortix dashed off, wading in the roaring pools of water below, reaching for your one key to salvation. Beatle continued strumming his melodious song in an almost deceitful way, misguiding any who would stumble upon into believing this to be a peaceful confrontation. You breathe as flashing red lights began to float above your teammates' heads (and your own as well). The Leviathan had shrugged off Roland's attack as if it were child's play and, with a ferocious howl, dove straight at the man, intent on tearing him to bits. The man guarded against the monster's attacks, holding on as pain seared through his arms and legs as the Leviathan's body threatened to slice and crush his body. The taunts from earlier had distracted the Leviathan long enough and, with time and skill on his side, Ortix weaved his way through the dense pillows of water and, without hesitation, snatched the golden key from the murky wastes below. As he rushed, he noticed something poking out in the corner of his eye and, without a second thought, he swiped a yellowed piece of parchment that had been floating peacefully atop the waters.

Upon getting the key, Ortix frantically searched for the door but, at that point, the Leviathan had taken noticed on the felis. Anger boiled from the Leviathan's very core and, with a strangled shriek upon seeing itself tricked by the incoherently-screaming knight, it dove straight for the door and, before anyone could reach, guarded it from interference. A light blue bio-luminescent glow could be seen coloring from his stomach before crawling up its torso and, finally, resting at its throat. It stared the group down maliciously for a second and then, without another indignant squeak or beast-talk, blasted a rain of death upon the adventurers within the room. It targeted indiscriminately, pouring all its anger and soul into its attack. It would be its final one.
