Put Out Fire
Janet stared absolutely agape as the penguin soared into the air, fireworks bursting from its body. Was this part of the show? She’d been busy ruminating over her own subpar performance when the unexpected had occurred. Now, the object of the tournament was in danger of burning to a crisp, and taking the whole circus tent with it. Think, think. Something to put out the flames. A memory rose in the teenager’s mind of a huge, moss-covered boulder that she and her brothers had used to play on in the woods near the farm. Even in the dead of summer, it had been cool and plush to the touch.
The girl shifted her skirts and knelt, touching one hand to the ground and closing her eyes. Moss, she willed.
When she opened her eyes again, at first it looked like the naturamancy had failed. She’d half-expected the entire circus tent to be covered with the same lush, verdant covering she’d been imagining. It took her a moment of looking around in disappointment before she realized a medium-sized circle of emerald-green had still appeared directly underneath the struggling pile of bodies. Those unfortunate enough to be on the bottom might find themselves now pleasantly supported on a new mattress of springy foliage, which had grown over the top of Prinny as well. Alas, the flames seared on. The moss shriveled, turning brown and crackly as the fire licked hungrily at the living matter.
