Mags nodded along as the pirate spoke, managing to be both annoyed and impressed by his ceaseless pirate puns. She was amused that the game would conjure up such a fun, likable character for their quest. Perhaps he would be able to stay around after all? He was answering their questions, so maybe that was a good sign?

When he pointed, and noted that ships do not simply vanish, Magdalyn sucked on her bottom lip. It was a bad habit, and one she figured she would never break, but it indicated that she was working through a complex problem. She was turning something over and over in her mind. Ships cannot simply vanish? They are right... there? Her eyes narrowed as she tried to spot something in the distance. Could they be cloaked somehow? Was this Terrasphere's Bermuda Triangle?

The woman remained so lost in thought that she nearly missed Olly Mango-Leg's friend's arrival. Then, with lips pursed in disappointment and disapproval, she watched the health bars of her comrades begin to dip. Damn, she thought bitterly. She was quite fond of this Olly man, and she had hoped to keep him on as an ally.

But he was hurting her party, and that was unacceptable. So she freed the spear from its place on her back, and dropped into a ready position. As soon as Corvella finished her attack, Mags moved smoothly up behind her, and jabbed the harpoon into the ghost's midsection. A jolt rocked her as she realized how incredibly stupid she was being. Attacking a ghost... with a pointy stick?

It was unfortunate that they were going to have to fight the ghost pirate, because honestly Luna had thought he was a fairly charming gentleman. He hadn't just attacked them and had been pretty forthcoming, at least as far as she actually understood what was happening. Which, come to think of it, wasn't super much, considering that she wasn't exactly the best at paying attention when she didn't feel like she or anybody else was in any real danger of being attacked or killed.

That was at least, before Ueno had tried to restrain the pirate and he seemed to not like that very much. Not that Luna could blame him, being restrained probably wasn't the most fun thing in the world, now that she thought about it. At the very least, it had kicked a whole sequence of events into motion that would have them attacking the ghost, a sequence in which Luna would have to take part in. She couldn't exactly allow her allies to handle everything by themselves, now could she?

"Please Natiri!" Luna spoke, receiving a chuff from the tigress who launched herself headfirst into combat, stalking around the attacks already being thrown, before she found herself in position to bat at Olly with a heavy, clawed paw.

That was relatively easy. Without putting up much of a fight Olly Mango-Leg had confirmed the group's suspicions and was in fact gleeful about the ordeal causing him to now be promptly beaten down by Alric's fellow party members. They each took a different approach of attacking but the end result was the same. Why a ghost was able to take on a physical form was beyond him though. In a world of magic and monsters it was easier to just not question these things.

While the tiger kept Olly busy he decided to take advantage of the situation and circle around to the pirate's rear with his weapon now drawn. With everything he had Alric ran and with a jump drove his blade into the spirit’s back. As the opposite end emerged from the man’s chest he smiled.

“Hopefully they'll make more room in Hell for you this time around.”

He didn't like hurting spirits, but malevolent souls always rubbed him the wrong way. It a glance Mango-Leg appeared harmless enough. Perhaps under different circumstances he would have been a successful comedian. If he really did kill the crews of those ships though then he was too dangerous to just leave alone.

After being struck to the chest and face, pierced with a spear, and the final, most devastating blow from @Alric Stalwart's blade, there was no doubt that the malevolent, undead pirate had fallen. And what a way to go! He had made no movements to avoid these attacks. After all, he could not move very much with his legs bound up by the wood around him.

"Is it over?" Rumbottom peeked out, appearing a bit more cowardly than anyone ought to desire, from behind Lumberface. "Has he finally been finished?" A quietness lingered in the air, as fog swept around the ship. The greenish, misty crows nest vanished from view. If it had been Olly Mango-Leg that had brought on this curse, if it had all been bound to him, certainly this marked the end of it. How quick had their victory been!

"And... Scene!" A voice boomed, the door to the back cabin of the ship being kicked open. "Aye, quite the drama there, but I prefer me stories to have a bit more arr and arr, if you catch me sail!" There he was, as though he had never been slain at all. It was somewhat unnerving, even for him, to see the dead visage of himself, bound in a prison of wooden planks, and wounded from all sides. With a motion of his hand towards the upper mast, fog churned to reveal that his shipmate was still there, within a dreamlike crows nest. "So how about we try again, aye?! That was fun, but too... Grrrave to be true!"

With a hand in the air, mug still within it, he gave a mighty cheer, and another projectile flew in from an unforeseeable angle, impacting, yet not penetrating, the form of the one who had struck him the hardest, @Alric Stalwart. And while it was not completely apparent at first, a black spot appeared upon @Ueno Mizuki 's knuckle, after having struck the pirate, soon causing similar effects as to when the same condition appeared upon @Corvella 's palm.

"Tangerine Terry! Welcome aboard, matey!" The ghost captain cheered. With Johnny Lime in the crows nest, there was a strange scampering about. Another tenant, though this one much much more eerie, began scampering around in the shadows, no doubt planning some horrible mischief. He avoided eye contact, leaving only a trail of pattering footsteps as he ran all about, feverishly shaking.

With the pirate being the one to strike first it looked like the rest of the party was also willing to resort to violence, which was good since Mizuki wasn't feeling like being too kind after that shot. They had tried being reasonable, but Olly Mango-Leg was the one who broke the parrrlay so he couldn't complain if they returned fire. With an assault from multiple sides, including a tiger mauling him, the ghost pirate was quickly beaten down, the lupine woman exhaling as at least that was over and done with.

Except that the damn ghost was still up and kicking, having reappeared in another spot as if nothing had happened. Narrowing her eyes Mizuki glared at him, glancing back at his original spot to see if his previous apparition had disappeared. No, it was still there... had it been a fake all along, or was that just part of the trickery of a ghost, to leave behind its slain body only to reappear somewhere else? Her thoughts were interrupted by a sting of pain, looking down at the fist she had used to punch the pirate to see a nasty spot, looking both unhealthy and unnatural. Drat.

Shaking her head she first looked up, to see that the ghost in the crow's nest was still there. Maybe she could do something about that one... attacking Olly at this point seemed fruitless, since even @Alric Stalwart's magic hadn't actually deterred the pirate. However there were others better suited to that task, and seeing them get to it the lupine woman focused on what she could do.

Attack Olly? as long as she didn't know how he reappeared like that it would just be a waste of effort. Heal herself? She could, but she wasn't sure if it would do anything either. It was honestly a relief when the ghost pirate himself gave her another option, when he called upon another one of his crewmates, this one skittering around on the deck instead of hiding somewhere far above. Leaving the spotter to her allies Mizuki closed her eyes and focused, one of her ears twitching as she sniffed the air. This new arrival, Tangerine Terry, was the slippery kind who'd try to avoid being hit. Which was why she'd make sure she could track him even in this fog.

It took some focusing, ignoring the pain from her arm, but then Mizuki suddenly opened her eyes, one glowing golden and the other icy blue, before dashing straight towards Tangerine Terry was. She moved on all fours, only when she had closed the distance bringing one arm up and using her strong hind legs to launch herself, placing all her momentum in a punch straight into the man's gut. While that alone probably wouldn't be enough to take care of him at least it'd get him to stop moving around... if the ghost still obeyed the same rules as those of flesh and blood, of which there was absolutely no proof.

It worked. She thought that the infamous pirate captain Olly Mango-Leg won't go down this easily, but they've done it. With it legs trapped, the adventurers quickly launched a combination attack, ended with Alric's thrust. They defeated the pirate ghost.

Or so they thought before another Mango-Leg kicked open the door behind them, revealing he is well and alive. Not believing what she saw, Corvella looked back at the ghastly body that they just killed. There's no mistake, it's Olly Mango-Leg. The blonde was sure that the one they killed weren't just an illusion; she would have sensed it. Did he just clone himself?

Another projectile was shot, this time it hit Alric critically. Olly raising his mug must been a cue to shoot. But where was it from? She looked at the ghastly crow's nest above, suspicious that Johnny Lime might be the one responsible for the projectile. The knight quickly ran around, putting her shield on her back and swiftly climbed the mast, to a surprise considering she wear all-heavy armor. As she tries to make her way towards the Crow's Nest, yet another crew of Mango-Leg pirate boarded their vessel, this time it's Tangerine Terry. Curse pirates and their fruity naming conventions.

Corvella almost reached to the top by climbing the mast before an immense pain burns her right hand. The condition has spread even further to the lower arm, this time it looked so much worse, almost made her fall into the deck. The knight promptly casts another illusion spell to herself to ignore the pain and continue ineffectively climbing. Finally reached to where Johnny Lime was, Corvella confronted the ghost pirate figure in front of her with shield once again wielded. "You're done fishing for trouble here."

In hindsight, Luna figured that she really should have known that it wouldn't be over after a single rushed assault against the ghost pirate. He was a ghost pirate for crying out loud! How were they supposed to beat something like that without a ghost pirate of their own? Fight fire with fire, that sort of thing? Either way, it became fairly obvious to Luna that somebody needed to deal with the foe at the top of the crow's nest, so it would probably be best if she did that. Let somebody else draw the captain's ire as she made sure that nobody else could attack them.

The newcomer was also a concern, he seemed like he was planning something and she wasn't too convinced that they'd be able to survive whatever was about to happen. How many other ships had these guys potentially sank or stolen, after all? Surely they couldn't be the first group that they actually revealed themselves to or even fought before they sank the ship....or whatever pirates did.

She focused as Natiri rushed back to her side, flicking through the pages of her grimoire as she selected a spell. A magical circle flared to life below her feet, her single visible eye glowing purple as she focused intently, a purple haze appearing around the crow's nest, before it exploded. It felt like it'd missed its mark though. She'd not put enough power into it. Damn it! Somebody would need to give her a hand here, it seemed.

    “AH!”

He wasn't sure how or why, but the fight wasn't over as Olly Mango-Leg appeared again after being slain by his party and performed a counterattack alongside the phantom crew. Without warning Alric had been struck by some kind of projectile that sent him sprawling onto the floor. Though the wind had been knocked out of him, it wasn't difficult to get back to his feet.

It seemed everyone had diverted their attention away from the deceased captain to disable the support he was getting from the other ghosts. After tracing out a spell using the ring a spell circle appeared beneath his feet and magic began to swirl around Alric's body. By the time he managed to lift his blade the spirit energy had twisted to form an oversized lance. With one swift motion he raised his blade and lowered it to point toward Lime before firing the magical polearm at the spirit.

    "What the-"

Her curse was drowned out by the slapping of the waves against the hull, the shouting of men, and the pounding of feet on wood. Of course the ghost came back after being killed. It was a ghost. She knew that the moment she thrust her spear into it's torso, so why in the hell should she be so shocked now?

Mags gritted her teeth against the sheer stupidity of her actions. And worse, the urge to strik the pirate once more. Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results? You moron, she scolded herself. You can do better than that.

So she swung her attention to the scheming sidekick who sneakily scampered about. What in the world was he up to? Rage at her own foolishness still pulsed through her veins, and the more she reflected on it, the angrier she grew. By the time she threw herself into the path of Tangerine Terry, her harpoon was burning a bright, violent red. It promised death, as did the look in her eyes.

Fight smarter, not harder, some small voice chided, but she barely heard it. The salty breeze blasted her hair back from her flushed face, at the same time as she plunged her spear into Terry's chest. She used far more force than necessary.

Tangerine Terry had barely sustained the first blow from @Ueno Mizuki, as he continued scampering off in the opposite direction. His hands clutching his stomach not only served to nurse the pulsing wound, but to clutch some unknown object close, hiding it from view. His eyes were locked behind him, watching cautiously towards the one who had struck him initially. Unfortunately for him, a swift end was upon him, as another enemy valiant had positioned herself in front of him. Finally looking where he was going, his mischevious feet were not quick enough to evade @Magdalyn's blow, the spear penetrated his flesh just above where his hands protected. As his body collapsed, an apparently incendiary explosive device fell from his grasp, harmlessly tattering on the ground. Thankfully, he hadn't been able to set up the contraption anywhere! "Well done!" Rumbottom chimed. The heroes had made quick work of him. As Tangerine Terry's body collapsed against the wooden surface below, his shape soon faded away.

In the crows nest, a pirate peeped over the edge, peeking down at the mayhem through a spyglass. Certainly, such a device of vision lengthening needn't be used when the efforts below were relatively close, but the rather short pirate did not seem to notice. Usually, through the glass lenses, he caught close up glimpses of the wooden planks below, and occasionally catching sight of a face or two, but only very briefly. His initial peace was cut short, as an arcane explosion wracked the crows nest. Leaping behind the barrier, he peeked out again a moment later, as a giant, spiritual looking lance thing soared towards him. "Bah! Blawaah!" Collapsing backwards, the lance crashed into the phantasmal crows nest, sending ghost-wood chips splattering across the undead form of Johnny Lime. He had not even noticed @Corvella till she had spoken, then turning to her. what a terrifying predicament!

Olly lowered his mug ever so slightly, his overjoyed expression twisting into one much less pleased. The arrival of his crew seemed to be bringing the attention off of himself! How could he allow his audience to be so easily swayed to secondary sources of entertainment! Needless to say, he was a heartbroken man at this sight. Raising his mug again, he gave a displeased frown. The next crew mate in line to enter the scene began to appear next to him, but he waved this one off.

"Nar, lass. I need some time alone with these ones first, argh..." The apparition wavered, before fading once more, waiting until its captain's cue. With a melancholy sigh, he glanced towards the ocean, as it splashed against the side of the boat. "Ye always wave, don't ya. I suppose that just be what an ocean do." He couldn't keep himself from chuckling at that one. "Now rear your eyes, mateys! It be me! Captain Mango-Leg! Give me your attention!"

The previously clear night had been swept up with a fog of clouds. Swirling mist caught around the boat like a dog bound to a tree, running hastily in circles. Somehow, pieces of sand and salt hung in his tornado, causing some discomfort to any who fancied... Breathing.

It was satisfying to connect with her punch, seeing the little ghost react a lot more substantially than the captain who seemed to enjoy everything that was done to him. Of course just because this one reacted differently didn't prove that it also had more of an effect, but at least she felt like she was actually punching something and getting results. However even so it wouldn't mean a lot unless she managed to prevent Tangerine Terry doing... whatever it was that he was planning on doing.

Fortunately her ally @Magdalyn was paying attention, finishing the cowardly ghost off while it was trying to get away from the aggressive Caenis. With the strange contraption falling uselessly on the ground that was one threat dealt with, Mizuki nodding towards the other woman in approval before returning her gaze towards the source of it all, Olly Mango-Leg.

Truth be told she still wasn't sure what to do about the situation. Tangerine Terry appeared to really have disappeared once he'd been pummeled enough: she didn't pick up on any signs of him reappearing, even as she turned to look around the ship and angled her ears to try and catch up on any small sounds. So either the ghosts were playing more tricks, or it wasn't that they were immune to being struck... She wasn't sure what to make of it all.

"So is the captain an exception, or are we being toyed with..."

She said this more to herself than anyone else, but she spoke loudly enough that at least her allies, those close to her, would be able to hear it clearly. However her attention was immediately caught when a new ghost began to appear, only for Olly to wave it off and say that he wanted some more time in the spotlight himself. So there were more ghosts waiting as Corvella had suggested, but how many...

The mist obscuring their vision was a nuisance, but the real issue came when Mizuki began to cough, realizing that the sudden change in weather came with lots of tiny particles in the air. Covering her mouth with one hand she narrowed her eyes, then began to run towards Olly. She doubted he was really invincible, otherwise he wouldn't be a threat to them either. The only way that logic didn't work was if this world somehow completely disabled the action-reaction law of physics... which would make for a boring story. She doubted the creators of Terrasphere wanted the world to be boring.

That didn't actually answer the question what the best way of dealing with the pirate was, but for now she settled for running up to him, inhaling deeply through her nose to minimize the amount of dust and salt she inhaled, then raking her clawed hand brutally across his face, wanting to see what he would do if she did something a bit nastier than just relying on blunt trauma.

The moment Johnny Lime realized Corvella's presence, it was too late. She was already in position for a critical strike, swinging her shield hard enough to dislocate a jaw. The strength of the sudden strike would sent the rather short pirate flying, but she won't care enough if he lands on the deck or the bottom of the sea; that last blow should be more than enough.

The crow's nest was a advantageous position, except that Corvella has virtually no use for it as she lacks the means of ranged attacks. The knight looked at her teammates at the deck, signalling them that the annoying pirate should have been taken care of. It looked like they have finished the shady Tangerine Terry as well. But apparently the captain wasn't a big fan of being ignored, as he denied entry to another ghastly crewmember and instead released something to attract more attention to him. Sand... it's coarse and it gets everywhere.

For now, Corvella decided to hang around the Crow's Nest, maintaining higher ground and communicating with her fellow shipmates to set up another tactic to stop Mango-Leg's jokes.

Finally, they were making progress! With one spirit down all that remained were Mango-Leg and Lime, but the former had quickly dropped his jovial facade as the group's focus had shifted away from him. Alric instinctively brought an arm up to protect his face in a desperate yet futile effort. The smog was too thick and easily choked everyone on the battlefield.

Through the chaos though he could hear the voice of @Corvella from above. A petty trick? Maybe she was onto something… But whatever stunt Olly was pulling could wait.

“I thought you were a pirate, not a clown… You're really starting to piss me off though; put that shit down, take out a weapon, and fight us like a real pirate would!”

Tightening the grip on his oath blade, the Wight Knight charged the pirate head on this time. While putting as much weight behind his slash as he could he aimed for the mug the man had been clutching onto so fondly since he first appeared. With it smashed into a million pieces maybe he'd at least take this fight more seriously moving forward.

When Magdalyn had imagined herself caught in the heat of battle, she had always been so sure of herself. She had always known exactly what to do, and if there had ever been any hesitation, it was caused by her lack of ability. Never had she envisioned these pauses, this uncertainty, this momentary panic. This "oh-shit-what-do-I-do-now" approach to combat had never even phased her. And yet, here she was. Wondering what the hell she should do now.

Fortunately, she had succeeded in stopping the scampering minion. His brilliant explosive-on-a-boat scheme had been foiled, and that was something to be proud of. For the moment, she had been successful, effective, the hero. And now, she was simply the girl with the spear, and a dumb-struck look on her face. What was there to do next? Try to hit the bad guy in the crows nest, though she had no way of reaching him? Or stab the ghost who she somehow knew would come back to life?

Rock and a hard place. Lesser of two evils. The not-as-stupid-as-the-other-option option. What did she have to lose? This quest was already proving itself to be full of surprises, and maybe she would surprise herself again, by actually being helpful. Maybe the ghost would stay dead this time.

With a practiced ease, and a confidence that she hoped hid her hesitation, she once more poked the specter with her spear.

With her spell unleashed against the one in the crow's nest, Luna could only turn to the undead captain himself and prepare another spell. Maybe if she hit him hard enough, she'd draw his attention or blast him away? Perhaps he was like the zombie pirates from that one film and couldn't swim or even stay afloat? If only it were that easy.

She held a hand out, Grimoire open at the correct page, a magical circle sparking to life around her hand and connecting to a small magical circle that sparked to life on Olly's chest. No time to waste here, she had to just keep blasting him along with her team, even if that strange smog made it kind of hard to focus.

"Flow power, flow. Scream soul, scream. Cast a drought of rain and a drizzle of sun, amidst the maddening world." Her eye flashed, flower releasing blue sparkles of light as the circle on Olly's chest blinked once. Then twice. And then it detonated.
