    The Last Laugh

With his mug and his eyes pointed to the skies, Olly Mango-Leg gave a sigh. The sea was his unlawful kingdom, the stars his advisers. In life, they had been his guides. A map in the sky that he could always rely on. When his skin and soul was fresh, those stars had looked down on him with adoration. They helped him willingly. Now, in death, it seemed they only gave him confused glances, wondering why it was he was still there...

@Ueno Mizuki 's claw attack struck, the pirate making no moves to evade it. It left brutal marks across his face, tearing the flesh in a rather horrifying manner, leaving grotesque wounds across the visage. It was only upon @Alric Stalwart striking the mug, shattering it's chimeric shape, that Olly's face showed something other than an apparent, unfaltering grin. Looking down from the stars above, the pirate furrowed his brown, in partial confusion. It was as though, perhaps for a moment, the dreamlike enemy remembered his fate, his doom. But this only lasted for a moment, his eyes locked upon the one who had struck his drink. Even as @Magdalyn 's spear pierced him, and @Luna Avalbane 's arcanamancy blasting into his chest, his gaze was stuck upon @Alric Stalwart.

"Now I ain't ever met Captain Morgan..." Olly reached for the spear lodged in him, pushing it out, as he stood up straighter. Reaching somewhere at the side of his belt, he pulled from an invisible sheath an illusive cutlass. "But that was good rum, matey." Reaching his arms up, he swung the blade down. It struck just as the projectiles had, passing through, but leaving a haunting ache in the non-physical wound.

"Penelope Peachy-Pie! Glad you could join us!" From behind the pirate's frame, a female, equally ghostly form appeared. With wide eyes, as though there had been great, sea-borne horrors witnessed by those orbs, she stood behind her captain defensively. With an inhuman gait and sway, she drunkenly darted towards an opponent, striking with a ghostly blade, just as her captain had, before vanishing, and reappearing next to Olly.

"Pie-aye, captain! Wouldn't leave ya here alone!" She cheered, reaching somewhere unseeable to pull a mug full of rum for her captain. She smiled. Good friends, they were! "For Mango-Leg!"

Meanwhile, Johnny Lime's defeated body began to fade from this realm. The illusion of the crows nest began to fade as well, having been bound to the lookout. @Corvella would begin to see the wood of the ghostly crows nest beneath her begin fading with the apparition she had struck down!

"Gah!" Luna certainly hadn't been aware of the next approacher, nor had she been aware of the attack aimed at her until it struck true, sending her stumbling backwards with a yelp of pain. Ouch! She whimpered, before her eyes widened as Natiri lashed out with a paw to retaliate, though it didn't exactly strike with a masterful amount of force.

Though now that she looked closer, Olly didn't seem to be in the greatest shape. She looked around at her allies. One of them seemed to be the undead captain's particular target. It made some sense, really. He'd done very well against the pirate himself. It was really impressive, actually. Meanwhile, she'd not done much at all.

She sighed. Spectacular. Once again, she wasn't much help to anybody she partied up with. Just what she wanted.

Uh oh, she forgot that the ghostly crow's nest is a part of the lime she had thrown overboard. Corvella looked at the mast, getting ready to climb down before she saw that once again Mango-Leg brought another crewmate of his aboard the Grubby Skipper, this time it's seemed different from earlier skinny pirates. And apparently he's getting back that mug of rum. Realizing the opportunity to strike the newcomer from above, she gripped the edge of the mast, fast-roping like a special force with her metal grips withstanding the heat.

The rope slowed down her fall that might be enough to survive the fall if she doesn't misjudge the height, and when she thought it's the perfect distance to jump off, Corvella let go of the rope, leaping straight to Penelope Peachwhatever trying to slam her shield with her whole body weight put behind the strike.

To his surprise the plan (if you could call it that) had worked. Mango-Leg had fallen for his taunts, but before Alric could try to evade the approaching blow the pirate's blade effortlessly passed through his body. A hand shot up to clutch the spot where the sword had entered but no traces of a cut were found, despite still taking damage. This was more like it!

He jumped back to examine the field now. Only two this time around. Olly's ability to summon more of his crew was starting to get annoying. With the captain's focus on him it'd probably only add insult to injury to ignore the man now.

“Sorry captain, that rum just had to man-go away... But now I think it's pie time we ended this.”

With a little more self loathing established for succumbing to the puns, he charged again and aimed his sword toward Penelope’s stomach.

Magdalyn knew that she was letting herself get too worked up over the battle. First, it had been rage at her own failure, because what was worse than killing an enemy just to watch him come back? Then, it was frustration, and hesitation, at not knowing the right answer. She always knew the right answer. Why was this so different?

And as yet another enemy was rolled out before her, like a model on the runway of an endless fashion show, Mags gritted her teeth. What in the world was she supposed to feel now?

Then she heard @Alric Stalwart. His voice carried over the sounds of the waves, the boat the battle, and she heard his light, easy puns. And somehow, that was exactly what she needed to hear. Despite herself, Magdalyn smiled.

This was supposed to be fun, right? She was in a game, on a pirate ship, in the middle of what should be a goofy-ass fight. So why was she being so hard on herself?

Hot on Alric's heels, and thankful for the morale boost he had unknowingly provided, she also drove her spear into Penelope's gut.

There was something both annoying and amusing at the way the pirate captain just took the strike without even trying to defend himself. On one hand it felt somewhat insulting that he'd rather just take the attack than take it seriously, and on the other... well, he looked kind of silly with how he was standing there even as claws dug into his skin. Seeing skin, flesh and facially muscles cut in response to her own attack Mizuki felt like she should be somewhat disturbed by the sight, but instead she was just happy she got a result.

Although for the ghost to be bothered by his mug getting shot of all things... The Caenis jumped backwards to avoid possible retaliation.

"...I have the strange urge to grab that mug and see what ghost-rum tastes like."

And yet another member of the ghost crew appeared. Given the fact that the captain was the only one who'd returned after being struck down she had the strong suspicion that the rest of this fight would consist of getting rid of his crew one by one until finally there were none left and the captain was vulnerable. Some kind of ethereal link between the captain and his crew?

Well, no use wondering too much. For now they were actually doing pretty well, with the others already having begun their assault on the new ghost. Regardless of how the captain had respawned after the first time he died it seemed like nobody wanted to try it again until they were given reason to believe it'd do anything. Mizuki for her part had no qualms against taking care of the pirate crew before taking down the captain himself. Especially since she was pretty sure his underlings would give her more of a reaction than mister 'I'll just let you claw my face open'

Running back in Mizuki decided to switch it up a little, not wanting to become too predictable. Circling around the two ghosts she spun and lashed out with her leg, trying to sweep out the female pirate's legs. Ghosts or not they still acted like they had real bodies, so why not see if they also reacted to being tripped and kicked?

Even for a ghost pirate, it was very surprising to Penelope Peachy-Pie to be suddenly attacked by not only a tiger, but an enemy who somehow was falling from the sky? Then, after stumbling away from the surprise, airborne attack, she nearly turned out of the way, as a blade pierced her abdomen. A moment later, a spear found it's place within the same wound. Then, with the final combatant circling around and striking at her legs, there was not much the female pirate could do to keep balance. She fell back onto her rear, bombarded and overwhelmed by the torrent of attacks. Unfortunately, for each attack that struck within her wounds, the attacker would feel a dull ache in their own form, within the place where the ghost pirate buccaneer had been struck. Weakly, she looked over towards her leader, still standing not too far away. "C-captain?"

Olly had been occupied... His attention had turned towards Rumbottom. In a spectral jaunt, he had appeared immediately in front of the feeble captain. With his apparent, ghostly wounds severe, this only served to make the image appear more haunting. "Jon-Jon, we have fun-finished business, don't we, lad!" With the shadowy cutlass flickering in his grasp, the wraith-like pirate tightened his grip on the handle. "Ain't it true that it was the treasure I loaned ya that purchased this... Grubby Skipper." He gave a horrible cackle.

"Very sorry it came to this, Olly-boy..."

"Back away from my captain, ghost!" Lumberface stood defensively before her captain, holding a rusty knife in her hand. Unfortunately, due to the changing of the times, her and Rumbottom had not the funds to afford proper equipment. With no obligations, they had become more of a decoration of the docks, rather than a functional piece of the seafaring life. "Aye, this blade be from two generations back. Me mother used it to sever a leviathan's limb! Don't make me slice ya!"

"It be a shame, lass..." Bringing the blade above his head, he was nearly about to bring the cutlass down upon her, when one of the opposing force's words got to him... He paused, freezing almost completely in his action, before letting his hands come down, dropping the mug of rum and his ghostly edge. Turning, he faced @Alric Stalwart, the enemy's words finally registering in the pirate's head. In the heat of the moment, he had not really been listening too closely, but... It was a joke!

"Hah... Hahahaha!" He turned to peer across the deck towards the foe, smiling and nodding. "That was a good one, lad! Thank you for playing along."

Hold on, was it @Alric Stalwart that made the earlier pun? Wow, she is definitely impressed. As Corvella landed with her body over her shield above Penelope, she kicked the pirate to bring herself into the air with her acrobatics, sending her into a backflip and slamming her shield once more into the ghostly buccaneer's face. The blonde felt both impact on her own skull, probably one of those damage reflecting tricks. With the help of berserk, she ignored the pain and landed safely on the deck, slightly disoriented. On her feet, Corvella held her shield with both hands to engage the weakened ghost.

While she was occupied with fighting Penelope Peachy-Pie, a sudden revelation from Captain Mango-Leg himself stopped her fighting for a while. Captain Rumbottom loaned from a notorious pirate, to buy the Grubby Skipper? But hadn't he been chasing Mango-Leg for all his life? Jon-Jon did not directly acknowledge or refute the claim, but she has this feeling that the captain of the ship intentionally left this information untold.

With hesitation clearly shown in her eyes, the knight brought herself to ask the captain. "Captain Rumbottom? What's the meaning of.. his words? Is it true what he said?" She looked back at the forth at Rumbottom and Mango-Leg, demanding answer for the earlier claim.

He nodded back to Mango-Leg with appreciation. If anything, the man did have a good sense of humor even in death. The praise did little to help sooth the pain Alric was feeling now though. His body was starting to show signs of damage as his movements became more sluggish. With health and energy dwindling, he wasn't sure how many more crazy stunts he'd be able to pull off without a break.

As Corvella dealt another blow to the female pirate he followed slowly with his sword in hand. For a moment he paused to examine the fallen form of Penelope but ultimately plunged the end of the Oath Blade toward her throat.

"This be the end of it, Olly. Let these waters be yer rest, as it shall be for us all, one day!" Captain Rumbottom appeared more frail by the minute. Perhaps it was the sand and salt lingering in the air, that spun around the ship like a tornado, but his hunched frame waned under the pressure of the scene. With a hand on Lumberface's shoulder, he steadied himself. Meanwhile, the forces opposing the undead pirate struck down the fearsome Penelope. Mango-Leg did not bother peering back towards his fallen crew mate, his mind and gaze fixated upon the two sailors before him.

"A final offer, before I take it myself then!" He hunched over, his body collapsing onto the wooden deck a moment later. As his face impacted upon the hard surface, listless eyes pointed towards the open sea, longing for life. Of course, this was not the end of the pirate captain, as he appeared again a moment later, his foot upon his own corpse. Like a snake shedding its skin, Mango-Leg took on a fresh, unscathed body. "Now, where was I? Oh yes, me offer!" Reaching down to the ghostly blade on the deck, he pointed it towards Rumbottom with the tip of his cutlass.

The winds around swept up with a renewed fierceness, ripping bits of the sails into tatters through small bits of sharpness. The whipping and whistling gave rise to a blueish-green radiation, and all around them, the fallen crew mates began to rise again, taking on new form just as their captain had done before them. From the side of the boat, a skeletal hand reached up. A moment later, the cobwebbed muscles rose up to reveal the face of Penelope, back from the dead again again. From behind a barrel the wet scampering of footsteps marked the return of Tangerine Terry! And the crows nest, with it's broken pieces flickering back up, as though it were a clock set to run backwards, reformed, vague movements able to be made out within it.

"All I ask is that ye swim to shore and leave me my vessel. It be mine, after all! Ye purchased with ME VERY OWN treasure!" He smirked, ripping a tatter of flapping coat off of his shoulder, letting it fall onto the ground below, his clothes decaying just as his body was. "My curse will be lifted, I shall cause no more trouble for ye. Leave me with me treasures, this Grubby Skipper, and ye will hear none more of Jolly Mango-Leg!"

"It ain't been me who set ye to this fate, Mango! You'd gone vanished before I could repay ye!" Rumbottom argued from behind Lumberface's shoulder. "This vessel be ours, mate! The damned ought to stay that way!" Lumberface added, as the undead captain approached closer...

"Honor a pirate's dyin' wish. Off with ye!"

The ghosts start to reappear just like Mango-Leg did, with no signs of them stopping doing so. She was still able to fight, but if they keep doing this it's going to be only a matter of time before they are all exhausted. And this curse on her right arm, it's getting worse and worse each time Olly reappears. Not only him, she could sense that the others came back stronger too.

Corvella stopped herself to not to strike a ghost with her shield as she listened to the offer of Mango-Leg... A pirate's dying wish? So it was this ship, the Grubby Skipper that held him to the material realm all this time. He's asking all of them to leave the ship for him, while swimming to the shore. Wouldn't that make them the same as all the others that get their ships taken by the ghost pirate? On the other hand, if he's telling the truth then all of this can be stopped for good, once and for all.

The knight lowered her shield and turned her head to the captain of the ship. The ship might not mean much for them, but it's certainly a lot more for the old Jon-Jon Rumbottom. She knew he's not going to let it go easily, as shown by his argument. "So it's this ship that kept you haunting the sea for long." Corvella continued with a question directed to Mango-Leg, half of her hoping that he would give an answer satisfying enough for Rumbottom to let his ship go, but her other half wanted to protect what's left of an old sailor; his vessel. "But what good is a ship in the land and sea of the dead?"

Mizuki looked around as first the ghost captain reformed, stronger than before, but then the entire ghost crew so far reappeared as well. So far the only clue they'd had towards how Mango kept returning had been that he was the only one, with theories ranging from it being the mug he drank from or him using the rest of his crew as substitute lives. Now that the three ghost underlings also reformed these theories went straight out of the window, or at least hopped dangerously close to it.

Which left her wondering what their next step should be. Keep fighting? But the ghosts didn't appear to be aggressive right now, and she didn't want to keep going if there was no reason to believe it'd actually have any effect. Frowning she noticed that the strange marking she had received when she struck Mango had been spreading, so she used the lull in the battle to place her good hand on the marked one, channelling her energy to at least counteract some of the corruption so it wouldn't get in her way. She couldn't undo the... curse? But she could heal the effects.

So if we let you have this ship you will be able to stop haunting this place and we'll no longer have to deal with disappearing ships?

Mizuki looked at Rumbottom and Lumberface, who both didn't seem to care for the proposal. But from a realistic perspective... There was no reason to believe continuing the fight would work out well, and even if they won wouldn't a cursed ghost just keep coming back? They'd never get rid of the actual issue if they didn't solve the issue of there being a ghost pirate.

What about the two living sailors over there? Neither of them was responsible for your death and without this ship they'll have trouble meeting ends. I'm all in favour of helping a ghost find peace if it'll mean there'll be no more ships getting lost but... Well, if possible I'd prefer to not leave captain Rumbottom without a ship.

With some luck they'd be able to steer this to get the ghost pirates to finally disappear. She didn't think they could save the ship but maybe they could get something else in return? For now Mizuki kept a more relaxed pose, making it clear she wasn't planning to attack them or anything like that as she instead wanted to see what talking could bring them. Although if talking didn't work... How to make them stay down?

When all seemed to be said and done, a few attacks had struck true and it seemed like they might actually be starting to make progress, but things weren't exactly going the way that they hoped. In truth, Luna found herself mighty lost with the things that had been happening, completely unsure as to what the full story here could possibly be. As far as she'd heard, Rumbottom had stolen something from Olly, at least according to Olly, but Rumbottom insisted that Olly hadn't waited or something.

She wasn't sure. It was all super confusing really. She wasn't entirely convinced that either man was telling the whole truth, really. And everybody seemed more intent on either fighting or giving the man their ship than actually getting to the bottom of whatever mystery that laid beneath all of this. And that was fair, she supposed that their job never had been to actually solve the mystery of this specific boat or feud. Or maybe it was? Maybe that was how they'd get the old ships back and find out exactly what had happened?

    "W-wait a moment!"
She called out, to Olly and to Rumbottom, Natiri pressed gently into her side for some sort of moral support. "What.....what kind of past d-do you two even share?" Hopefully it was the kind of question that everybody wanted to ask, but nobody had asked yet. "Um, is it something you'd care t-to share? B-because I mean, i-it sounds like you u-used to be close..."

Finally, the pressure of his gaze upon the two sailors was relieved, the younger at the brink of quaking. Olly turned his eyes towards the others in his presence. Certainly, he saw them only as the mercenaries brought along by his true quarry. Obstacles. But perhaps they could see reason. As already shown, one in particular had a decent sense of humor! How could the great and jolly Mango-Leg be true if he could not appreciate such a thing? Maybe they were worth his time. He was in no hurry, after all.

"I've a question for ye, lass. May-haps it could answer yers in the askin'." As Olly turned away, he took a swig from the mug that had somehow, magically returned to his grasp. Perhaps one of his sneaky crew mates had rushed it over to him. "If ye were to fall in a way fate did not deem, ain't you think there may be some... Loose ends? Some bargains unbargained! Some deals undealt. This ship here," He muttered, smiling faintly at the mast, sails torn with sand and winds. "It be me last loose end."

"Aye captain!" Penelope saluted to Mango-Leg, shoving her fist, clenched around the handle of her own ghostly scabbard, into the air. "This Grubby Skipper be what we been lookin' for!" @Ueno Mizuki spoke up, posing the next question. "True as my dyin' wish, lass. It be me promise. As the tales foretold, when--"

"When the fruit pirate sinks, it will be upon his unstollen vessel..." Rumbottom spoke up, finishing the pirate's statement. This time, he was unshielded by Lumberface. standing upon his own two feet, chest held as high as his aged muscles could muster. "Some say fate ain't no such thing, but if ye returned, Olly..." His brows furrowed, as he squinted at the undead opponent, contemplating something very difficult within his mind. "It still be my ship. A ship with the living, not with the dead."

"A shame..." Finally, Mango-Leg turned to @Luna Avalbane , "Oh, close? Hah, I'll tell you, lass, we--" He was cut off, as a sudden approach from behind had his back impaled. The tip of a rusty blade had found itself protruding from the front of his chest. Staring down at the wound, his gaze turned into something more mortal than the players had seen before. He winced, as though a great agony had begotten him, writhing through his dry veins. From the blade, an illusory, greenish-blue mist began to leak from the wound. His fingers twitched, and his grip upon the spirit cutlass began to loosen, dangling in his grasp.

"Captain!" Penelope Peachy-Pie shouted, darting towards her captain, but before should retaliate at his attacker, Lumberface had already been struck down. In a swift turning, Olly Mango-Leg's wound, his aching agony, had all been in jest. Truly, a simple rusty knife could not cause him so much harm! In a rapid turn, he had pulled himself off of the blade, and sliced down towards his attacker with great haste. Umber Cucumber Lumberface's body fell across the deck. Whether her heart still found rhythm, no one could tell... "No more interruptions!"

"Now, one less corpse to worry about if ye all would still like to make your way off me ship! What do you say?" He presented to the players in front of him, a proud grin across his face.

The knight in the black suit could only stand in silence towards Captain Mango-Leg's response. That's right, what did she expect? A loose end is a loose end. If only there's another way. No, they have already tried fighting. Fighting solves nothing.

She slowly walked around the starboard side, looking at the sea that's not as chaotic as it was a moment ago. Her hands touching the weathered sides of the Grubby Skipper, while her emerald eyes scanning to see if they have some kind of a lifeboat. Nope. They'll have to swim, or rely on Mizuki's ability to create wooden structures. She didn't care, the blonde would just swim and drown herself for a while.

The girl turned to the rest of her crew, shifting between @Ueno Mizuki, @Magdalyn, @Alric Stalwart, @Luna Avalbane, and Captain Rumbottom's eyes. It looks like they have agreed on a single outcome, the one she did not want to happen. But it's for the best if Mango-Leg stopped terrorizing the seas. If he's telling the truth, of course. "It looks like you guys have come to an agreement, then." She switched her view to Captain Mango-Leg, whom started to feel impatient about the deal already.

She walked toward the port side and sat there on the edge, eyes closed, her hands brought together as if she were praying while waiting for her comrades to take action. Whether they take a smaller ship or swim all to the shore, the girl identified by Corvella would emerge to jump down and follow them, hoping that by letting the pirates seize the Grubby Skipper, the nightmare would be over.
