Returning @Nikephoros’ nod with one of her own, Alkaid gave their other lively companion a quick smile, “That was some nice footwork there, maestro! I’d say thanks to you two we’re off to a ratical start!”

Was there a special hell for bad jokes and puns? She certainly hoped not.

More importantly, however, the man who come up with their game plan seemed to have another for the library, so she decided to head over there. While she did want to see the Storage Closet, which was one of the more likely locations for the cause of this infestation, she also knew that there were plenty of other places to hide it in a three-story mansion, not to mention the other nearby buildings.

And so it was back to the matter at hand. Stinky, noisy rats.

She could hear them as soon as she entered the library. The sound of sharp teeth gnawing on wood, likely one of the bookcases, resounded in the room, although she managed to pick out the scamper of tiny feet. Likely into some hole, or perhaps a tunnel connected to another room. A quick glance around proved that the library was certainly comfortable enough otherwise, certainly a place she wouldn't mind settling down in during winter.

It was perhaps a bit ironic, then, that human comforts were what were to be turned against their little opportunists this time.

Alkaid had listened to Nikephoros' plan intently as he set about getting a fire going in the fireplace, albeit feeling a bit snubbed with the mention of "somebody with Aeromancy" when they'd just cleared out the Rooftop together. She resisted temptation to give a quick jab, though, at least for now.

"I'll be able to get to work on the chimney pretty soon," she said, giving a glance to the skylights above. "But if you want any help getting the rats together I think I've got something."

With a quick flourish, she sent her cards floating around her. Magical energy began to flow between them as she arranged them in the air, a subtle spell being set into the works as the woman's gaze became a bit distant, her posture completely still.

In her trance, she caught glimpses of steel flashing in the air, rats bolting for their little hiding places. Locations where they loved to take their food, spend the night, and...

    And...

Even in the midst of her trance, she grimaced. Ah, yes. Well, if rats were not eating, there was at least one other thing they'd be up to, both day and night. Having no wish to dwell on such things, Alkaid cut off her spell. A nasty grin formed on her lips as her focus returned. "And there. Now I know where most of these naughty little rats will run off to."

Sending her cards outward, she set about scaring rats out of hiding places and blocking them altogether, relying on a new spell to give her premonitions of where they might go just in case things changed course. Careful positioning would allow her partner's deadly blade to handle most of the rats, a cackle of energy or magical glow from her cards effectively cutting off their escape no matter where they turned.

Summary: Using Aeromancy to air out the smell and draw out rats, Astral for searching for hidden rats.

"Are you ready bud?" Vince turned to ask Haru as he did some light stretches. He was still coasting from the adrenaline of his last slap chop adventure, throwing down with some rats was a great way to stay in shape. Now they needed to keep working, and since he hardly knew any of his other fellow rat slayers aside from one angry witch lady, Haru was his prime choice. The two heroes had made quick work of the armory, netting Vince two usable swords that he'd probably have to give back at the end of it, but still it meant he was armed and ready for a little bit.

Now they had a new challenge, the kitchens.

Vince hadn't worked in a kitchen for a while, but he was pretty sure plague rats were a big nono on the health inspectors checklist. He peeked into the door and squinted for a bit, looking for any blatant signs of rat activity. The occasional scamper or scurry lit him know this room was in fact occupied, so he turned to his friend and gave him a nod.

"Alright, Im gonna try and draw them all out for a brawl, you should try to lock them down again and we'll go hard in the paint alright?"

He chuckled for a moment, and think took a deep breath. He was going for a complicated illusion this time. Perhaps less complicated than making a copy of himself, but still difficult. He took a deep breath and began to focus a bit. He opened the door and let his illusion fly. Several piles of cheese and their illusory smell appeared, and a bright disco ball appeared hanging above the kitchen. A distorted but recognizable tune began to play...

"Lets Groove tonight! Share the spice of life!" As the quintessential Earth, Wind and Fire song came on Vince waited to see what Haru would follow up with and would dash in to throw some hands, er, swords to help him out.

Summary: Vince used his illusion mastery to make a rat disco to draw all the rats out and will follow up with his slashing mastery to slap chop some sick boiz

The fumigation of the closet was complete, and as Tetsunosuke opened the door slightly, he then withdrew the stand where he placed the log on, but when he was about to close the door, a rat sprung towards him. Instinctively, he drew the tantou from his hip and cleaved the rat in halves. "This is getting dangerous," he thought as he closed the door before sheathing the tantou. He needed to inform the others who will clean up the number of rats still alive to be vigilant, and so he sent a series of mails. Fortunately one of the cat princesses he had met before decided to shoulder the load of cleaning up, and, as he returned the andiron to his inventory, she appeared at his front.

"@Lycia was it right? Well all right, I hung the gas mask at the knob to be sure, and always be prepared for jumping rats. As you should know, they can jump upwards up to more than twice my height. Ah it's too hard to be a faerin." He then stood up from his squatting position (since sitting in that area was never advisable due to the amount of rat urine and excrement in there) and then said "Good luck," before moving on to the next area.

As he then entered the library, he then marveled at the teamwork of the two people there. One made sure that the rats would leave their hiding places but would not let them go back, while another person kills them with his spear and burns them in the nearby fireplace. Maybe there was no space for him here... wait. He could make sure that all the rats here would meet their doom. Getting three talismans from his coat, he then chanted a spell, to beckon the spirits of the cats that once lived in the mansion to round up the rats in the mansion. He then threw the talismans, and then each of them generated ethereal figures of cats, which started to chase the rats towards the bald person. If he thought that the bald man was taking a lot of rats, he would beckon the spirits to chase them away from him. As he watched on, he then moved his right hand towards the sheathed tantou. He would never know when it would be handy.

Summary: Using Spirit Magic to call the spirits of the cats that once lived in the mansion to round up the rats towards Nikephoros, or away from him if he had too much of a job to tackle. If Nikephoros gets too tired, he would shoulder half of his job by using his Slash mastey to kill off the rats.

There it was again, that low, throaty growl of an angered animal. Ralin pursed his lips in contemplation, then heaved a small sigh. It was better to check, he decided, than to go on wondering. Besides, his gut had never let him down in the past, and having good instincts was an important part of being a groundskeeper.

Peeling himself away from the cleansing process, the burly man strode to the large, double-doors of the menagerie. The thick wood gave the impression of added security, and intricate jungle designs were carved into its face, making even the entrance an impressive piece. What was behind it, however, was far more staggering. Beasts of all shapes and sizes roamed various habitats, all decorated to match the animal's homeland. Tigers paced atop real rock, brought in to reconstruct their mountain lairs. Monkeys hooted their greetings from high tree-limbs, and fish cut like shimmering darts through pristine pond water. Everything was just as it should be, and yet, something bothered Ralin.

The sound continued, but there were no animals here that appeared to be calling out. In fact, now that he was inside the menagerie, the noise seemed more muffled, more distant. Then what was it? If he had to guess, it sounded like it came from directly below him, but only when he was in the main entryway. But that meant...

With added intensity in his step, long strides carried the groundskeeper back to the entrance hall. From there, he shouted to the adventurers. The house was vast, and he was sure that there were some who would not hear him, but his big voice still boomed in the airy space.

I am going to the basement, in case anyone needs me. I will return in a moment.

    General Information
    • Any additions/changes from the previous cycle are in yellow.
    • Word limit for this cycle is between 100-500 words. Please pay close attention to this!
    • Each person can help clear one room this cycle, or search a previously cleared room for treasures. You may not do both actions.
    • The minimum number of individuals needed to clear a room of rats is listed below. Though more can help, that minimum must be met.
    • To clear a room, players must work together to orchestrate a plan. Use your masteries and vocations, and anything that the room has to offer.
    • For example, to clear a barn, you might have a beast tamer calm the animals, a geomancer create a trench to guide the rats out, and a hydromancer to flood the trenches and move them along.
    • The more creative you are, the better chance you have of success.
    • Remember: Avoid causing too much damage! Do not simply set the room on fire, regardless of how much you hate rats.
    • Each player must play a role in clearing the room. Their contribution must be evident - they cannot stand and watch.
    • To search a room for valuables, you will need to roll a d100. Use the roll thread. A roll of 70 or higher means you have discovered something (which will be revealed later). Feel free to add +5 for each tier of hunting or incognito. Use the "search" template below.
    • You can simply describe your character looking for, and/or finding something (in a secret compartment, on a high shelf, inside a safe you picked, etc.). But be careful! You would not want Ralin to catch you snooping.
    • Use the communication thread, PM, or Discord to team up with your comrades, and create your plan!
    • Rooms that were attempted in cycle one can be finished in cycle two (for example, if only one of two people posted).
    • For a better chance at success this turn, please work with different people, and try a new method!
    • Questions? Ideas? Just let me know!

    Westfall Manor

    Downstairs
    [IMG]
    Upstairs
    [IMG]
    Kitchen
A long room with a low ceiling. There is little room to move about, as the space is filled with cupboards and counters. The metal cookware that dangles from the racks clinks like pleasant windchimes with the slightest breeze. Jars filled with exotic spices in all colors are arranged in precise order.
Requires at least two people to clear.

    Gym
A wide room with few windows. A hoop hangs from the wall on either end, and a variety of balls are piled in one corner. Free-weights, ranging from five pounds to fifty pounds each, are arranged in on a rack. Lines, in various colors, are drawn across the hardwood floor.
Requires at least two people to clear.

    Laboratory
A small room, with a slanted ceiling, tucked beneath the grand staircase. It has no windows, and one door. Glass vials filled with numerous chemicals are housed on shelves. A long table occupies the far wall, with an ornate, complicated chemistry set spread across it.
Requires at least two people to clear.

    Grotto
A one-of-a-kind addition to Westfall Manor. The small room is designed to mimic a grotto, with real rock lining the floor, ceiling, and walls. Veins of multi-colored crystal shimmer from the rockface with the help of magic. Everything is damp, and has a very earthy smell. A small pool, big enough for three or four people, rests in the middle.
Requires at least two people to clear.

    Dining Hall
A massive room, used to host fancy dinners and frivolous galas. A sturdy wooden table, long enough to seat forty people, stands in the middle of an easily-converted dance floor. It is set for as many people, with plates, cutlery, and glass drinkware. Ornate tapestries hang from the walls, and a collection of musical instruments wait in the corner.
Requires at least two people to clear.

    Workshop
Much of Nigel Westfall’s wealth comes from the technological advancements of his many companies. His workshop is littered with half-completed projects, metal husks waiting to be brought to life. A myriad of tools hang from the wall, and blueprints for… something… are spread across the table.
Requires at least two people to clear.

    Armory
Suits of armor frame the doorway, both on the inside, and the outside. Weapons of all shapes and sizes rest on wall-hooks, and a mat covers much of the floor. Twin punching bags hang in two of the corners.
Requires at least two people to clear.

    Menagerie
One of the largest rooms in the house, and Nigel’s pride and joy. Exotic animals from all over Terrasphere are housed here, in small, decorated enclosures. Everything from mountain tigers to brightly-colored birds can be found in the man’s personal zoo.
Requires at least two people to clear.
    Rooftop Garden
Glass ceiling and exterior walls bring in as much sunlight as possible, and bring life to Nigel’s collection of exotic plants. The smell is overpowering, intoxicating, and the space stays warm year-round. The plants are arranged in an organized way, though meant to mimic nature’s chaos, and a multi-tiered fountain bubbles joyfully.
Requires at least three people to clear.

    Library
Skylights brighten the room, decorated in colors similar to those in the recreation room. The thick carpet and dark colors create a snug, homely atmosphere, accented by a crackling fireplace and overstuffed armchairs. The walls are lined, floor to ceiling, with shelves of books.
Requires at least three people to clear.

    Recreation Room
A cozy room with forest green wallpaper and lush carpet. The heads of dangerous animals are proudly displayed along the walls alongside two dartboards. A pool table with rich crimson velvet sits in the center.
Requires at least three people to clear.

    Master Bedroom
Where the man himself sleeps. A large room with surprisingly modern decor, filled with sleek statues of women. There is a king-sized bed draped in white and gray blankets. There is also a writing desk, a dresser, a wardrobe, and shelves containing priceless artistic treasures.
Requires at least two people to clear.

    Servant’s Quarters
A simple room, without decoration, or anything else that might make it unique. It holds three bunk-beds, with space enough for the cooks and housekeepers (those who work outside sleep above the carriage house). There are also six plain trunks along the wall, for personal belongings.
Requires at least two people to clear.

    Storage Closet
There is nothing but rats in this room… right?
Requires at least two people to clear.

  5. Location Room - Entrance Hall

When perhaps about a third of the rats were dead Alkaid had noticed the library's door open, the rats in turn seeking a new route of escape only to have a new intruder to deal with, whom Alkaid gave a solemn nod, her magic requiring she keep her trap shut and focus on the task at hand.

At least, up until the room seemed mostly clear, barring the still burning fire. Letting out a sudden sigh, Alkaid's eyes flickered from Nikephoros to the actual trap in the room, "Nice work, guys. And glad to see you made it, Mr. Tatsuke of the Flaming Bladeworks." Now, that one had to be on purpose. Regardless, the woman headed to the door, "Also, I hope either of you don't mind if I check on things downstairs? I need a quick breather after that one. Maybe open a window."

Or perhaps so she said, for as soon as she made it out into the hallway, Ralin's voice boomed down from below.

He was headed into the basement.

Alkaid began to rush downstairs as soon as she heard him. "Don't you fucking dare go down there without us!" she shouted, a rare outburst from the woman.

The basement, he'd said. Also known as the most likely place rats tunneled to. That place you never went down alone into in monster movies. That place people liked to do creepy rituals in the dead of night.

And he was going in. Alone.

Perhaps it was just paranoia born from Hollywood. Perhaps not. Either way, Alkaid had it in her mind that she would need to save him. Oh, she was willing to play along with the quest and exterminate all the rats elsewhere first, if only to avoid the chance of them swarming the adventurers later, but she knew better. She remembered when her mother had to call in an exterminator once when she was young. And from the rats of Icewind Dale to the reptillian dragon-rat that eventually made its way into Monster Hunter VR, she'd slain them all.

And where did they prefer to nest? Underground, of course, then the attic.

Were Ralin to enter the basement before she could get there, she was fully willing to use spells such as a force of wind to blow him back toward her, or even more deadly Aeromancy if she thought he were in true danger, consequence of damaging the basement be damned.

Summary: Attempting to stop Ralin, or perhaps Alkaid simply overreacts. Willing to allow this to consume this cycle's action if need be. (due to The Matron don't have much choice on that one. Least this is a less damaging action for it though)

  6. Location Recreational Room – 1/3

The next arrow had been knocked and ready, careful aim taken like before, but as the Felis released she found her aim to miss when the sudden shout from the doorway caught Milah by surprise. In a split second the arrow had farted away, smashing into one of the windows of the dining hall and splintering glass as part of it was now damaged. But before Milah could even woo around and complain another sound assaulted her ears, hands reaching to cover them as best she could as the screeching sound of the violin filled the large room.

It seemed the rats were as unhappy of the noise as she had been, fleeing the area, and the brunette found her gaze glaring at the intrusion by the doorway. ”So now they’ve left this room and will probably end up huddled somewhere else in the mansion, or invading another person’s house and causing as much havoc, because you don’t want to kill them?” Her voice wasn’t angry, though she was still a bit upset about being startled, but instead she spoke una more matter of fact way.

Sure, some times peaceful solutions were good, but this problem needed more than a peaceful solution unless they planned to round up every single rodent and relocate them somewhere that they wouldn’t bother anyone; a hard task to do really—though impossible was probably a better adjective for it.

Before the conversation could continue Ralin’s voice boomed from not far away, ears flickering as they zeroed in on the tones of his voice. He sounded… troubled. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion and thought, bow and arrows moved back to a resting position, before the Felis made up her mind. Already Milah was very suspicious at the large amount of rodents in this mansion, the earlier conversation she’d managed to overhear not doing much to calm those thoughts.

If there was indeed something causing all of this… she’d rather make sure Lycia was nearby so they could keep each other safe. And so the Felis left to find her sister, up the stairs and into a few rooms. One of them turned out to be as cluttered by hidden rats as many others, and although the vermin were out of sight her keen ears and nose could easily pick out their hiding places amidst the various items and recreational objects in the room.

It was no surprise the rodents were now desperately trying to hide, what with al the noises and people running up and down and the squeal of other rats as the life was snuffed out of them. Any prey could always tell when it was being hunted and it was best to hide...

Summary: Using her Hunting skill Milah is pinpointing the parts in the room where the rats are hiding.

  7. Location Book Prison- CLEARED

The library had been cleared, thanks to the combined efforts of Alkaid, Nikephoros, and... who was that one? No matter; they had used some form of magic to assisting in wrangling up and casting to the fire the many rats that had been in the room, even slashing through a few here and there with a blade.

It hadn't been as clean a job as Nikephoros had wanted, but it had worked. He moved to the fireplace, extinguished its flames, and examined the pile of soot and ash and so many small baked bones, sifting through them with a wrought iron poker from beside the hearth. The cinders were still hot, but he began to carefully check for anything the rats might have left behind of value; a bauble they'd swallowed. A key that might go to a safe. What have you.

Finding or failing, he then stepped back and examined the room itself. Quite lavish, without the vermin infesting it.
Alkaid had run off in chase of Ralin who had called out and informed them he would return soon. He wasn't sure where the man was going, but it gave him a moment to possibly browse the room and get a leg up in the world but liberating something from it. He began to check for rare book titles, peeking into display cases to see if there was anything he could remove, and examining desk drawers and the walls of the book-drowned room for any kind of safe.
He moved slowly and calmly, as if just appreciating the fine details of the room, and ignored Tetsu as though he had no reason to speak to the boy or feel guilty. Hopefully the lad would run off to another room, but if it came to a confrontation, it was a single witness against a professional actor. The odds favored Nikephoros, so long as nobody else happened to run in like it was the plot to a bad play.

Summary: Casually examining books and decorations in the library, which has been cleared of rats, looking for something worth stealing. Something to sell (for gp), a collection of jewels (for gacha), a Grimoire or Focus to cast spells with. Whatever might be useful or valuable.
Also checking the fireplace for anything left behind by the cremated rats.
Not just stuffing his pockets, but acting instead as though he's appreciating how nice the room is now that it has no rats... and trying to slip something nice into his inventory.

  8. Location Recreational Room- 2/3

Lycia wandered out of the storage closet looking pleased with herself. She clapped her hands together in the familiar motion of someone who has just finished a task and felt that they did a good job. Also, she was smiling, her cheeks stretched to their limits, her tiny teeth on display. She was surprised to see her sister waiting for her outside of the closet and immediately bounced up to her, situating herself in Milah’s personal bubble.

This is fun! she told her, her slender tail wagging back and forth in a display of happiness. I feel kinda bad that we’re killing everything, but maybe it’s for the best? Hey, how about we try trapping some in the next room! And we can let them out when we get back to the main city!

It was actually a horrible suggestion, but who was going to tell this kitten that? No one, that’s who!

Linking an arm around her sister’s shoulder, the pair walked off into the house. One hand held onto the map she had been given and she glanced down at it, mapping doors to paper, before stopping in front of one pair of doors.

Wreck e aye sho nal area. Hm, I wonder what’s in here.

Throwing the doors open, Lycia was amazed at all the animal heads on the walls and that massive pool table in the center of the room! She didn’t even know how to play cool, but it looks really really cool. One of their older cousins was pretty good at pool, but she and Milah were always too young to play or they just get in the way or something something big kids only.

It was not fair, of course.

Okay Milah! Lycia said, puffing out her chest and putting her hands on her hips. I will get the rats out of their hiding holes and you trap them with that cage we were given, okay? No killing this time! And, using her superior speed and agility, she began bouncing around the room, landing on the heads of the animals and swatting at the rats that had taken up residence in the small spaces behind them.

She made sure they fell to the floor and were ushered toward Milah and the waiting rat cages.

Summary: Uses Acrobat mastery to balance on the heads of the animals on the walls and get the rats from behind them and shoo them to the rat cages on the floor. Not killing any, just trapping!

  9. Location Laboratory

A considerable amount of time passed with Madison kneeling on the ground and the rats squirming in the grasp of her thorny vines. A little too much, for her tastes.

Looking over her shoulders into the hallway of the mansion, she called out, "Murderbuddy?"

    No answer.

The briar witch tried again. "Eyas?"

    Still nothing.

Madison was starting to get pissed. Usually the scrappy little girl was a lot better about showing up when killing needed to be done. Well, if she wasn't going to come to the slaughter, then by golly Maddy was going to drag her to it.

She poured a chunk of mana into her wrapping vines spell to keep it fed. "Don't move," she grumbled at the swarm of pests while she collected her cards and stashed them in her inventory. Turning on her heels, she left the damp darkness of the grotto and back down the ornate halls of the manor.

"Eyas? Where the fuck are you?!"

Madison rounded the corner and walked by the empty laboratory. Pausing for a moment, she noticed that no rats were around, having completely abandoned the room in search of their peanut butter treat.

The plagueslinger checked all around for any prying eyes. She had a bunch of things earmarked for thieving if she could've ever made her way back--and the coast was clear for the moment.

Ducking back into the lab, Madison decided to look around for anything else that might have been valuable that she could slide into her inventory.

When all the rats had been successfully scared off, Yukisa placed the violin aside, lips slightly pursed as he contemplated whether or not that had been a good idea. Mila certainly did not make him feel as though he had done a good job, anyhow, as she scolded him severely with an “I’m not mad, just disappointed” tone of voice.

The male cringed slightly, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand and glancing aside awkwardly. “I… didn’t think about that,” he confessed before looking back up at the girl apologetically. “Sorry.”

Just as he finished speaking, a shout came from the direction of the entrance, its voice belonging to none other than the groundskeeper, Ralin. Yukisa hadn’t even been aware there was a basement, as Ralin had not mentioned it needing to be cleared. Don’t rats enjoy dark, damp places..?

Before he could continue that thought, he noticed out of the corner of his eye that the girl had vanished, having disappeared while he was distracted. His heart skipped a beat. This felt like one of those horror movies where people disappear one by one as nobody’s looking.

… And now that he was alone, would he be next?!

Yuki then quickly rushed out, unnecessarily afraid of a nonexistent threat. He desperately attempted to find company… until he stumbled upon the recreational room, where he found that same girl again, alongside another similar felis.

The room appeared to be clear of rats, yet for some reason, the felises were sniffing about, likely in search of rodents. Initially, he watched in confusion, however he noticed that the two stumbled upon various nooks and crannies where pests could easily hide.

“Oh…” he muttered in realization. “They’re hiding.”

Trailing after @Milah, the boy took note of each location that had rats sneaking about in it. By the time she seemed to have found all the spots, he had managed to come up with a plan to draw the rats out.

Yukisa made his way to the center of the room, before taking a deep breath and shutting his eyes. Winds began to swirl around him at a slow pace, gradually picking up in speed. It seemed that the air was being drawn specifically from the holes where the rats were potentially hiding. Then, when the whirlwind was at a certain speed, fluffy creatures began flowing along with it, lifted by the powerful force. Upon reaching the center, they would begin to slowly descend, until they eventually landed in the various cages that had been sprawled across the floor prior to this whole ordeal.

Eventually, all the critters were rounded up, and even those that happened to have missed their designated cage seemed to be far too dizzy to escape. The male couldn’t help but grin up at the girls. “We did it!” he called out excitedly.

Summary: Following after the felis who he probably annoyed enough already, Yukisa helped her clear the room with the use of Aeromancy. Creating a powerful gust of wind, he drew them out of their hiding spots and unceremoniously dropped them into

  11. Location Armory

After dabbing on some rats, and helping clear out the kitchen on accident, Vince found himself puzzled. He'd found some nice swords, but for some reason he felt himself compelled to return to the scene of the dab. Like some sort of burning curiosity was compelling him to go fiddle around a bit and try to find out why on earth this dude needed so many god damn weapons. Sure, the rats proved the point kinda nicely, but this fucking mansion was in the middle of nowhere. Nobody needs that many weapons, except maybe some sort of ex hero or something. And Ex heroes have nice swords, maybe.

    Unless they're lame casters.

The moral of the story boils down to Vince deciding to look for neat stuff, to kill rats, he would assure himself. If he maybe forgot to return them well...that wasn't necessarily his fault? It was the pesky rats. He would kick aside a minced up corpse and turn over a piece or armor, or peer under a rack of spears looking for some sort of...secret lever or something. He wasn't sure, but finally after about three sweeps of the room, he noticed a box tucked away in a dusty corner, under some spears and behind a big ole suit of armor.

"Aha..." Vince mused aloud. "Come to papa Mr. Slapchop 2.0" He ducked under the armor, sliding along on his belly like a sneaky snake as his slithered under the armor with all the grace of a sneaky snake. "Oh boy I hope there are two of you, or I'm gonna feel real off balance"

  12. Location Rooftop Garden

Haru walks up a great set of stairs to the upper floor of the mansion. Wow, this day was getting pretty hectic. He had followed his friend Vincent into the kitchen as per his request to slay more rats, but then he had entered the room to a dreadful scene. He is standing in rats. It is the scene of some unnatural slaughter, the result of human conflict.

...Seeing it this way, it's nothing much. Haru bets that the rats he killed were not even in the hundreds. He cannot even be called a professional with such a number, nor would he be promoted to a seasoned exterminator. But the number isn't important. The qualification of Vincent, he who surpasses humans, is to be able to kill rats that are fated to die.

It is an act of fate. It does not matter if he does not have power as an exterminator, as long as he had avoided a disaster that involved vermin, no matter how small in scope.
Haru suddenly stopped his musing, thinking that his train of thought was being influenced by something that most likely had to do with a work of fiction. Right, time to stop thinking about that kitchen. Regardless of how effective that buff of Haru's had been on his friend, he needed to walk away to go get some fresh air. It only helped that he had needed to obtain more plants to continue his rather effective tactic so he headed to the garden up top.

The breath of fresh air he had been blessed with told him all that he had needed to know- this trip was well worth the trouble. The place was wonderfully maintained to the point that the rat corpses hardly even ruined the fresh air nor disturbed the soft sounds of insects that probably required a different kind of exterminator to remove. Idly letting his eyes wander the room, Haru relaxes in this artificial scene of nature.

  13. Location Recreation Room - 1/3

The library having been finished, Tetsunosuke then moved towards an area where it would be the next most vacated following the infestation: the recreation room. Surely, with the infestation going on, either the regular visitors of the Westfall mansion would be frightened to go there because of the rats and the sickness they were bringing, hence the vacation of the area, or the owner being too concerned about his status in the society if he would show a room infested with rats, hence the same vacation of this area. And so it might have become another habitation of the rats except the storage closet. And so this should be his next mission: to clear the rats here.

Materializing a lot of rat traps and a vat of bait really attractive to rats regardless of their tendency to become bait-shy, Tetsunosuke took a sizable amount of bait and placed some within the bait mechanism of each trap, and placed them anywhere he see a rat burrow, and also under the pool table. And then, whenever he would hear a trap being triggered, he would go to that area and quickly stab the rat within the trap with his knife, would throw the rat outside that room, and after cleaning the trap and placing another batch of bait, would place it again near the burrow where he had placed it. Over time, he would have killed a sizable number of rats before they would be aware of what was happening with their comrades, and then, he would stop and make another strategy.

Summary: Using Tinkering mastery to produce a great number of rat traps and ample amounts of very attractive rat bait beforehand, proceeds to place a lot of them in every area that the rats would tend to hide. Would instantly kill every rat he would capture using his Slash mastery, throwing them outside of the room.

The abrupt outburst caused Ralin to pause. His face contorted in first surprise, then confusion, and finally, frustration. Who was this woman to make demands of him, in what was arguably his own house? Though Mister Westfall paid the bills, he spent much of his time away. Ralin was the main occupant, the protector, the caretaker. The house was his, and yet, this stranger thought it appropriate to boss him around?

The initial edge of concern at the sound below him was dulled as he watched her draw nearer, and then stop. Though his cheeks were still flushed, and his eyes stormy, he forced his thinly-drawn lips into a tight smile.

Why do you stop me? I just heard a noise, and thought it may be more rats, so I -

A scream cut him off, shrill and sudden. It was unmistakably the sound of someone in distress. A young someone. The red tint that had risen in the man’s cheeks drained instantaneously, his leathery face bereft of all color, and all emotion, save for horror. He did not even spare @AlkaidZexis a panicked glance before throwing himself toward the open basement doorway. It was quite a sight, watching a man of such bulk streak down the steps like a bullet fired from a gun. He nearly crashed into the railing where the stairs turned, but was able to throw his broad shoulders the opposite direction at the last second. And as his boots thudded on the tiled floor of the basement, and long strides carried him to the far corner of the massive space, his voice boomed.

    Jaydon!

The groundskeeper’s son was perched precariously atop a barrel, his right arm cradled in his left, his face tear-streaked. The dark blood that leaked from a deep gash in his forearm shimmered like rubies in the dimly lit basement. At his feet, plague rats skittered about in the mad, jagged paths of enraged beasts. A few threw themselves at the base of Jaydon’s barrel, drawing a pitiful cry of fear from the boy. The sound broke his father’s heart.

He pounded toward his child, no longer worrying if his footfalls landed on tile or rat, crushing more than a few of both in his haste. When he finally drew within arms-length, he scooped his boy into his arms, and pressed him to his chest. Between sobs, the boy managed a tearful explanation.

    I just wanted to help.

Of course the boy had grown restless protecting the horses, and had entered through the exterior cellar door. Ralin grimaced, and held his son tighter. Then, careful not to jostle the boy any more than possible, he climbed the stairs back to the main entrance hall. He called to all within earshot.

More rats in the basement! I’m taking my son to the safety of the carriage house. I will return when he is settled.

And then the giant of a man was gone, moving with the speed that came only from a parent worrying for his child.

All around the house, rats seemed to pour from their hiding places in the undisturbed rooms. They moved like a river, arching around corners, dashing across torn rugs and scuffed granite, all heading to one place - the basement. And from a corner of the large, under-ground space, where a deep hole had been dug into the earth, came the same low, foreboding growl of something far too big, and far too irate, to be a mere rat.

    General

    • Many things have changed with this cycle, so read this portion carefully, and in its entirety!
    • If you searched successfully last cycle, you will learn what you found at the end of the challenge. Fear not!
    • Minimum of 100 words, maximum of 500, excluding OOC information.
    • You will have two options this turn - attack, or support. Read below for a full guide on what to do (as seen in the Reclamation of Pride event)!
    • For a more realistic approach, please actually write your character using the mastery you've chosen for the damage formula. For example, do not choose pierce just for the higher damage amount, then write your character using hydromancy to fight.
    • Use the roll thread to see how effective your attack or support action is.
    • Questions? Ideas? Just let me know!

    Basic:
    • Below are the list of actions you can perform. Carefully read what each one does.
    • Once you have decided on an action, go to the roll thread and roll what the action is telling you to roll.
    • In order to roll, you can just copy the template in the roll thread and post that. It will give you a number that you can apply modifiers to.
    • Next you have to fill in a template, which I will talk about below.
    Attacking Template:
    1. Edit the 000 inside health and energy tags
    2. Edit the name of the target you are attacking
    3. Link your tracker and roll

That was so cool! Lycia exclaimed, backflipping off of a stag’s antler and sticking a three-point landing in the middle of the room. Her lavender eyes were wide with awe and her cheeks were slightly flushed from exertion, but her entire attention was on Yukisa. She immediately rushed up to him and got into her face, her tiny frame poised on her tip toes while her tail flicked back and forth in a display of excitement.

How’d you do that? Can you teach me? Milah, did you see the tornados? Wasn’t that cool?! The kitten felis eagerly clapped her hands together as a wide smile stretched her mouth. Maybe she could have taken more time to read the other masteries instead of just selecting the ones that sounded the coolest. Granted, there were a few on the list she didn’t even know how to pronounce so of course they got skipped…

Lycia’s ears flicked at the sound of commotion in the hallway. Curious, and immediately forgetting that she was in the middle of a conversation, she walked toward the door and stuck her head out. The commotion was louder now and there was something about a basement and growling. She was confused, but she didn’t see a reason not to investigate.

Hey, something is going on downstairs, she told the two players behind her before stepping out into the hallway. Immediately after she did, she heard the cry of someone being injured and rushed off, her lithe frame drifting around corners at breakneck speeds and stampeding down the stairs two at a time. There, at the bottom of the stairs in the basement, she saw the rats converging and skittering and the young girl immediately frowned.

Alright! Time to get rid of these beasts for real! Time for an attack buff! The chime of her zils sounded in the air and the magic that poured from the tiny symbols wrapped around Milah, Yukisa and Madison as they too entered the fray.
