Madison descended the staircase into the basement, following the high-pitched squeals of the plague rats that survived the afternoon so far and the low rumblings of another beast entirely.

"What the hell is going on down here," she wondered just as the groundskeeper and his grandson or whatever rushed past. The little boy was whimpering in pain and clutching a bloodied arm. The briar witch opened her mouth to stop them, hoping to be given a few gifts from the manor in exchange for a healing vine wrap, but before a word could escape her lips they were out of sight.

Oh well. Their loss. Of blood.

The cursemage descended lower into the basement to get a peek at what was going on. What greeted her immediately sent a small chill down her spine. The floor was literally swamped with rats, their furry bodies scampering over one another, clawing and biting for space around what appeared to be a small dirt tunnel or pile or something in the far corner.

"Right, no cute tricks this time," Madison hissed to herself as she pulled out her tarot deck and shuffled up for a spell. Drawing a grip of five cards, she threw them out into the musty air before her.

As she focused her energy into a shotgun blast of pure malice, wisps of another exterminator's magic wrapped themselves around her, disrupting her focus. She screamed and triggered the spell early. Burning bolts of violent magic erupted from the cards, scattering in every direction and ricocheting off the stone walls of the cellar. Some of them even had the decency to connect with their targets!

Maddy spun on her heels, her jet black hair scattered and messy, a look of confused anger twisting her face in a grimace. Her bright blue eyes darted back and forth between each member of the party. "Whoever fucking did that, keep your grubby buffs to yourself, okay?"

Well, this was certainly not ideal... It seemed as though whatever lucre he hoped to find was too well hidden to gather up in the brief rest he was allowed. In but a few short moments, the house was flooded once more with terrible vermin, sicklier and more vicious than before, which ran about and crawled across everything. No longer concerned with performing the tidiest job possible, Nikephoros too his ranseur in hand one more and began to move through the house, heading slowly downstairs as his polearm stabbed through rats while simultaneously batting others aside as quickly as possible.

Pierce and parry. Pierce and parry... that was the name of the game, for now. But with so many creatures writhing about and rushing past, it was difficult to use such a precision based weapon as effectively as he hoped. He slew a few here and there, but more often than not they merely hissed and ran off, wounded, trailing a sickly looking blood and continuing to assail the household.

Alkaid had been ready to face the man's anger. She was ready to scold him for his carelessness, for not leaving the job to them when he didn't even have any method to defend himself should something else truly be down there. Especially given he had a child to look after.

Which was why she, too, blanched at the young boy's cry, although her own sense of protectiveness simply did not compare to that of a father's for his son.

By the time Alkaid reached the basement the man was already crushing rats underfoot. They may as well have been swarming around a looming giant for all the man's presence in the room, but there was one other problem afoot, quite literally. Alkaid could not help but notice more and more trickle in...

At which point the man was headed back upstairs, and she was left alone just long enough to hear a guttural growl. Not that she had time to focus on that, given the number of rats pouring in. At which point things started to click. "Shit." I'm going be trapped down here.

She immediately drew out her deck and prepared an Aeromancy spell. While Ralin's shout likely had the others attention, for the time being she was alone in the cellar.

Or, once again, so she thought, for a bolt of energy nearly shattered her concentration, flying just overhead. She dodged to the side to avoid another from nailing her head on, forcing her to throw out her two cards early lest she lose her spell.

The cards themselves, the Six of Swords and Four of Wands, for those with keen eyes, were part of the spell. They spun round and round, their edges forming circular blades of wind as they hovered just above the floor. Although even that was not enough to stave off the rats that simply came in a steady, unforgiving stream.

Even Milah stared for a while at the magical tornadoes, mouth slightly agape in surprise as she watched @Yukisa use his skill to trap the rats she and her sister had managed to find with their sharp senses. In no time the rats had been deposited in the various traps from @Tetsunosuke, and from what the Felis could tell there didn’t seem to be any left over… not in the recreation room at least.

    ”That was really cool.”

She nodded her head in affirmation as her sister bounded right into Yukisa’s personal space, her own tail twitching now and again in intrigue although Milah wasn’t quite as vocal and social like her sister Lycia. She smiled lightly, before noises from below caught her attention. Ears flickered around the same time as her sister’s, following a step or two behind Lycia as the other Felis popped out of the room.

The scream sent a shiver down her spine, and soon enough she was bounding through the hallway and down the stairs towards the source of the commotion—there was no way she was going to let Lycia close to all of that on her own. Out of the corner of her eyes she saw the groundskeeper heading out with a young and injured child, his child apparently, and it made the Felis click her tongue in frustration before she turned towards the swarm of rats.

Bow was quickly at the ready and the arrow knocked in place, feeling the familiar buff she had slowly become accustomed to from Lycia, but before she could release the arrow as Milah had intended the sudden outburst of another party member was enough to break her focus. So the arrow was sent off, most likely entirely out of Milah’s original mark, as the Felis whirled around towards the female with her eyes glaring and ears pinned back.

Her tail bristled in anger even as a warning hiss escaped her lips; hazel eyes zeroing on @Madison Freebird. ”I’ve got a better one, what if you own up your mistakes instead of blaming others for your shortcomings?” After all they had been hired in to help, which was exactly what her sister was doing with her buff. No way Milah was letting anyone—older or not—scold her sister for doing something right.

His serenity in the garden was so very rudely interrupted. What was that screaming? It sounded like a little child, and he didn't know of any except... oh. That boy. Damn, what was that kid even thinking to come inside down here?!

Haru rushed down the stairs as fast as he could. He almost tripped more than one time in his hurry to arrive at the place but his quickness had paid off as he arrived on the scene as it unfolded. He caught Ralin in the middle floor by chance as he carried the boy out and called to him when he saw crimson leaking, "Hey! Let me get a look at that after we're done. I need to check him for infection. I've worked jobs on disease research. First, though, I'm going to go end what bit you." (@Shibs ) The other man may have also been bolting too fast for a good talk, but Haru hopes that Ralin at least heard him.

The trip down to the next floor was a tad slower than before as the memory of nearly slipping kept him well in the realm of caution by this point. As he arrives, he assesses the situation. That's a lot of rats, and some of his own teammates appeared a tad green around the ears, not that he minded it one bit. It only meant that they had room to grow. Still though, to get through this safely it would be a good idea.

Haru approaches a rather intense man he knows to be Kijin from the escapades in the Bandit King's lair. Ever since the two had (informally) met, he had found the man to be a rather spot-on example on the kind of person he used to be. Haru decides to make this quick. Tapping his shoulder, he reassures the man's very spirit. Resolve, level-headedness and willpower bolster the man who's color contrasts Haru's own. All Haru can do is give the man a nod of encouragement. The tide of rats was grim.

“Er- Um-” Yukisa wasn’t quite sure what to do as the enthusiastic felis came extremely close to him, just inches away from his body. All he could muster was an awkward yet warm smile, and a slightly hesitant, “Thank you,” directed at both of the cat-girls whom complimented his skill with Aeromancy.

Well, even though it was slightly overwhelming, Lycia’s enthusiasm was actually quite pleasant. And hit rather close to home, considering he was also that enthralled by everything this game had to offer when he first dropped in. He had managed to get used to the amazing features of Terrasphere by now, however there were still times when he got as starry-eyed as the blonde before him.

“Maybe I could try teaching you some time,” Yuki told her, unable to deny the eager request of someone younger than himself. He wasn’t all that certain he could teach her if she didn’t have the mastery at all, but it was worth a shot, right?

The scream of a child cut their conversation short.

Yukisa was instantly alert at the sound, snapping his gaze in the direction of the door. “A kid?” he muttered out loud, his voice riddled with concern. “Let’s-”

He began to suggest that they should investigate, however Lycia and Milah were quicker to act than himself, heading out of the room and in the direction of the source of the shout without dilly-dallying. Yukisa hastily followed suit.

The amount of rodents they had seen up until now was nothing in comparison to the blanket of rats that was so thick it hid the basement floor. There was at least 6 times as many critters here than in any of the rooms, and they were all far more aggressive this time, lunging at anyone who approached.

Upon feeling the buff being applied to him, Yukisa acted immediately. Since the rats were far too small and quick for him to land a hit with his spear, he first utilized his Aeromancy and charged the air with electricity. It wouldn’t be quite enough to kill the rats, since his mastery level wasn’t very high, however it would stun them for just long enough that he could stab a good chunk of them… and probably cause the hair of everyone in the room to stand.

As the flow of the rat plague seemed to slow down, he began unleashing a frenzy of attacks with his spear, penetrating through the sea of rats, a few of them getting stuck on his spear as though it were a scrumptious rat skewer. The rats seemed to dwindle significantly.

Hearing a fight break out, his attention immediately turned towards the bickering. Seeing his two feline friends and the woman he had partnered up with earlier arguing over something like that made his heart lurch. This was the last thing that should be happening, especially during combat!

“Please stop fighting!” he called out to the three, his eyes clearly pleading. “We’re all just trying to help here, right?” he attempted to console them, hoping that weak argument would be convincing enough.

    Random Event

When you exist for one purpose only, life becomes very straightforward. There is no more need for food, for water, or for rest. All that remains is a need to serve, a need to swarm, a need to kill. Its entire reason for living was to accomplish one goal, and that was to cause destruction. Had this always been the case? It was hard to remember through the crimson haze. And the more it tried to remember, the tighter the spell took hold. The magic pulsed red, like its blood, through the plague rat's veins. Chaos. Chaos. Kill. Kill.

The anger drew it, first to the mansion, and the basement, and then to the creature with the bow and arrow. This being, too, was angry - the rat could sense the negativity, and hungered for it. The frenzied tapping of sharp claws on tile was amplified as hundreds of rats darted back and forth, looking for more havoc to wreak. But it had found its victim, its purpose, its reason for existence, and it streaked through the frenzy toward the Felis.

Sharp nails, and sharper teeth, found purchase on the girl's leg. It would not be long now, before she would also succumb to the madness, the rage, the red.

Everything was going normally for the first great mission of the Lightning Ironworks Pest Control Division. It seemed that the swarm of rats that infested the place was just some sort of a normal phenomenon in any home, just on the large scale. It only might have seemed that the place was just a perfect breeding ground of rats, and so the uncommon number of rats in this place. And it might be the reason why the pest control services of this world was finding it hard to clear all the rats in the area. It was good that they had called the adventurers at this rate, since they had the requisite knowledge in hunting and analysis and so they knew the methods to clear the rats safely and efficiently. Now they had settled in this normalcy, killing rats, clraning them up, the frequent sounds of rat traps clicking...

Wait, the clicking sounds of the rat traps should not have been more frequent, it should be on the contrary: the clicks of rat traps should have been lesser. Tetsunosuke looked down, and he saw a swarm of rats running amok around the area. He wondered why it was happening; he had only saw this kind of phenomenon for the first time in his life. As he wondered about the cause of this phenomenon, he heard something growling from downstairs, and at the direction of the growl, the rats started to go to that direction. Like hell he would let that. He shut the door of the recreation room, halting the rats temporarily, and then, drawing his tantou, started to hack the trapped rats into halves and quarters, not a single one did he let escape.

When the onslaught of the rats had been nipped to the bud in the recreation roon, he then stared at the mess he did. It should look like he would have a cleaning problem in the future, he was sure of it. But what should be the most important thing was to investigate why the rats had gone amok in the area. The growling still continued, and it seemed to come from the direction of the menagerie, but it seemed to come from lower than the ground floor. He then moved downstairs to the menagerie, and sure enough, he saw there an entrance to the basement. He then proceeded to the basement, and seeing other people also there, shouted, "WHAT HAPPENED?!"

The adventurers came together and, despite a few tense moments, made quick work of the minions. The basement was filled with the sounds of battle: bow strings snapping, arrows whizzing, magic buzzing, and the whoosh of sharp swords cutting the air. The violent symphony was first drowned out by the squeals and squeaks of rodents, but as the fight continued, those sounds died away. By the time the last rat was laid to rest, there was only the sound of labored breathing. That, and the bloodied, mangled corpses of hundreds of rats.

But then there was another sound, low, and barely audible. From deep within the tunnel, an odd half-growl, half-hum reverberated. It was a sound so deep that a person might feel it in their chest, like the bass at a particularly loud concert, or a drawn-out crackle of thunder. Or the rumble of a cannon in the middle of a war. Though it was a familiar sensation, there was nothing pleasant, nothing good, about this sound. And as the earth itself began to tremble underfoot, a moment of celebration evolved into a moment of chaos.

The ground rolled, sending shelves of storage and players alike toppling. Great chunks of debris rained down from the ceiling, like some great, terrible snow. Though the feeling was like that of an earthquake, there was little question that the cause came from within the tunnel. And when it burst forth, all suspicions were confirmed.

The enormous rat threw himself at the entrance, his enormous bulk smacking the earth and causing another tremor. He had bounced against the confines of the narrow passage with enough force to rock the entire earth. That was never a good sign. Red eyes pierced through the haze as the dust only just began to settle. As the claws curled, each punched easily through the carefully-laid tile, sending cracks zig-zagging toward the stunned onlookers.

    The Rat King had arrived.

A swarm of rats fell upon the lot of them. Was it inevitable, or were they spurred into a frenzy when someone showed a particular sign of weakness? Haru kept light on his feet just to avoid any kind of contact with the damn vermin until they started to tire.

As he backed up into a wall, he realised that the flow of beasts had subsided for now. After that, he saw what they had given way for. "How did these things even get into the castle..?" Haru idly mumbles complaints to himself. If this was what any trip with Vincent entailed, they could keep apart.

Well, that huge rat wasn't his job. Yet. It might be his job if nobody did anything about it, but not right now. How did his teammates fare at the moment..? They seemed fine to him- no, there was Milah, with the very same cruel gash on her leg that he had briefly seen on the child. His stomach felt heavier all of a sudden. He didn't know how many bacteria existed in a computer, but...

Better safe than sorry. Haru found himself walking to her, first for her injury, then the worry of disease. When he thought to look to her soul to see if she was holding up well in the face of a wound, it was all he could do to keep himself from sprinting when he felt the bloodlust that rose in her.

He didn't know what odd sort of ailment she felt, but he had to stop the effect. Grabbing Milah by the shoulders and spinning her around to face him, Haru stared into the window that was her eyes to stare at her soul. Seeing it clearly as he could, Haru could feel the gaze over her mind.

That wouldn't do. Haru settles into a glare. His own soul reaches out to her and brings with it a wave of cleansing purity. "Get a grip on yourself!" A pulse of light surrounded the two in what was the effect of a Dispel. He hadn't meant to cast that, but hopes it would help. At the very least, the 'haze' was crushed.

Letting go, he sighs in relief. "...Sorry about that. Let's kill that rat and look at how you're doing later, ok?" He makes a request. As much as he'd like to give a pep talk, there was a lot of urgency on their plate and nobody here was a waiter to balance it on the palm of a hand. The rats came first.

Booya! Ratties taken care of! Heck, she barely even had spare room to stand in. Which just left...

A growl came down from below. That.

Alkaid focused intently on the hole, sparing only a moment's glance towards the other person in the basement proper, Tetsunosuke. As if in answer to the boy's shout, the growl only seemed to grow louder and louder as the floor rumbled beneath them until one final tremor sent her stumbling onto the ground, crushing a couple rat corpses under her weight.

Alkaid shook her head, thankful that she didn't land headfirst, although the sound of the floor cracking nearby drew her attention to where she saw something that made her heart sink.

One big fucking rat. Teeth fashioned like a myriad of large daggers.

    Perhaps even sharper, too.

Panic rising, she needed no further motivation to scramble to her feet and ready her Aeromancy in effort to keep the beast pinned. Cards swirled in the air in front of her as she readied a spell that wouldn't do much damage, but instead continually batter the beast with what would normally be staggering winds, "I'm going to try to create an opening! Feel free give that thing hell!"

Vincent came running, faster than he thought he could run. He'd been too busy looking for slapchop 2.0 that he'd forgotten they were a bit busy dealing with rats. Ya know, the thing he'd been hired to do. He could practically hear Ray or Mags chewing him out for being suck a dingus, breaking the number one rule, never split the party. What the fuck had happened? Why was everything so loud? He rounded the corner and...

HOLY SNOT ITS THE KING OF ALL RATS.

Vince stopped dead in his tracks as he stared at the creature that had appeared. He quickly ducked around a corner and took a deep breath. That thing was big, mean, and probably had an intimidating name like Zabadaya the Plague bringer. It was the raid boss, and he certainly wasn't ready to be dabbing on any raid bosses, he didn't even have his food or potion buffs. Or his thunderfury, blessed blade of the windseeker. Instead he had his really bad Fate rip off character. He wasn't proud to admit it, but he'd just finished Ultimate Blade Works when he'd made this avatar, so he really wanted to be like the MC. So if that was all he had, he needed to go all in on the rip off. He took a deep breath and focused on his illusion magic.

"I am the bone of my sword."

He let the chant focus him, help forge his phantasm to something real. Or at least close to real as he could make it. Two more Vinnies, each armed with his makeshift swords. He could see their steps, feel their breaths, all the way down to the pulse. Visualize it Vinny, every fucking hair and freckle. Satisfied, he took a deep breath and let the magic fly. The first one was damn near perfect, or as close to perfect he could get, the second one was a bit wobbly, shaky, his hair was the wrong shade of silver, his skin too pale. The form was barely solid in appearance, but it would have to do.

      "Try this on for size!"

Madison turned to @Milah as the stray rat sunk its teeth into her flesh. A cruel smile crossed her face. "Talk shit get bit, bitch!"

As the rat's plague began to flow through her veins, the cursemage turned towards the rest of the exterminators. A sick look was in her eyes--it was almost time to science!

"Nobody touch her, nobody heal her," she commanded them. "I study diseases for a living, and if this is a new plague I'd very much like to be able to observe her, alright?"

Because I'm sure as shit that none of you saved me a rat to study, she thought sourly.

No sooner did she ask her fellow adventurers politely to leave Milah alone that one of the foolish bastards stepped forward to play the hero.

Madison spun on her heels and glared at @Haru, her eyes ablaze with the burning passion of a thousand suns.

"Did I not tell you to leave her alone,"
she shouted at him as she took a step closer. "Do you have any brains underneath that thick mop of hair?"

The cursemage's hands clenched until her knuckles were white. She nearly rounded around and boxed him in the ear with her fist. In the corner of the basement, the king rat emerged. Giant by every definition of the word, the monstrous creature roared, rattling the windows and shaking everyone to their core.

"Wait your fucking turn, asshole!" Madison wheeled around and threw a handful of cards in the air, pouring her anger into a spell that sought to tear away chunks of the king rat's matted fur and flesh.

Teamwork. It was exactly what there team was lacking. After all, they were nobodies to one another, with nothing tying them together but the mission. And even that barely got them all on the same page, as he himself had proven by trying to loot the library in secret earlier. He was not unaware of his own hypocrisy, but he chose to conveniently ignore it as he raced downstairs towards the booming noises coming from it. Debris fell from the tunnel he entered, causing blood to pour down his bald head without any hair for it to simply soak up into. Fantastic... it made him look like a madman who had been seriously injured, but the truth of it was, heads just bled a lot. Like, a lot a lot. He'd simply have to cope with it until the battle was over.

Focusing on the enemy at hand, Nikephoros noted how each person chipped away at it, hoping to bring the beast down... but little coordination. Until Alkaid shouted out her intentions, sending cards into the air to blast away at the beast and create an opening.

"Right!" Nikephoros shouted as the enormous Rat King staggered back several steps, barraged by @Alkaid Zexis and her magical onslaught. Raising his ranseur in his hands, much like a pole vaulter, but instead of striking it into the ground and making a majestic leap into the air, he kept its tip trained high and honed right on the beast's throat. The opening allowed him to close distance, but the Rat King turned to regard him at the last of moments, head dropping to protect its previously exposed neck, closing off the target. It was too late now to stop, though... Too late to slow, too late for caution. Lowering the tip of the polearm, he shifted his step at the last moment and thrust. The Rat King had raised its terrible claws to catch the blade and stop the attack, but he slipped past its swiping paws and felt the weapon sink deep, deep into the flesh of the shoulder. Stuck, between muscles and bones, a heavy font of blood pouring down the weapon. He held firm, pinning the beast back against the rear of the tunnel and against the wall.
"FINISH IT!" he shouted, to nobody in particular, trying to keep the monster stuck and vulnerable for the final blow.

No sooner had Tetsunosuke shouted when a pile of debris fell from the ceiling and towards the whole party. As the falling debris surrounded him, he was not able to dodge everything and eventually was buried with it.

As he woke up from being buried from the debris, he felt a sharp pain emanating from his right foot. He then looked towards his back, and he saw his right foot was crushed by a boulder generated from that huge tremor. He lifted the rock out of his leg, and he was horrified at what he saw: his right foot got twisted the wrong way, and the sharp pain was freaking him out as he let out a groan. But what he had saw later surprised him the most. He did not know if he was too small, or that rat he was seeing was freakishly large. Its length was more than twice his height excluding the tail, and its height on all fours could reach or even exceed his own height. A freakishly monstrous rat indeed. Tetsu thought that everyone was in danger, and so he tried to stand up, but the bad foot and the pain was halting him from doing anything. As he was helplessly watching the others fight off the rat, he thought that he might be the weakest link of the group. And then he saw the spearman that he worked with in the library impaled the rat to the wall, and it seemed he needed help, but as he saw the others, they were well-spent. Anytime that rat could be freed from its impalement, and so he needed to finish it off.

Mustering his willpower to stand up, he then aligned his right foot to its rightful place. As he did that he felt excruciating pain, but as it seemed that the foot was partially fixed, he then started to charge without delay. He felt pain in every step as he hobbled, but he could care less, as he would just heal it later. Drawing his tantou, and then jumping towards the rat, he then dealt a lateral slash to its neck, but it seemed it only sliced through the flesh, and it would almost mean nothing. And so, mustering his momentum to spin while he was nearing the body of the rat, he then dealt again another lateral slash on the neck of the rat, as the tantou then dug on the wall. As he then stepped on the right shoulder of the rat to maintain his footing, he then pulled the tantou from the wall, and then he fell to the ground, his left foot the first to land. He then twirled the tantou and then sheathed it back to its sheath at his hip.
