This old man is off his rocker and we hadn’t even started the whole quest. Perhaps it was best to leave him to his own delusions, though Ms. Caroline did ask them to keep an eye out for the old coot. Noah thought to himself, though he suspected that the other two people in his party probably were feeling similar towards Morpheus.

Greyhowl stuck by his master’s side, keeping his large snout to the ground to pick up any unusual smells. Noah had his bow in his hand and already notched with an arrow on the site of any sort of creature, be it friendly or threatening. The chances currently were that he was probably going to mistake the mad man as an enemy and let an arrow loose right into his forehead, so there was that going for him. “Shall we make things interesting and make a bet on what befalls our old friend up there? I personally think he might find himself tangled up in sort of briar patch before finding an enemy.” Noah chuckled as he tried to make light of the situation that they currently found themselves in.

Noah’s hunter ability kicked in and he started to notice odd markings, clearly just done, clearly by Morpheus. He wondered if there was anything around here that might actually be a clue to whatever is plaguing this region. That’s when he heard the snapping of branches and the feeling of eyes watching him. Greyhowl seemed to be aware of the new presence as well as his ears perked up and a low guttural growl started to be produced in his throat.

“Well, looks like I lost that little bet. Our friend seems to have gained the attention of some of the locals around here huh?” Noah raised his bow and took aim at one of the odd looking wolves that was positioned near the mid of the pack, seeing how Morpheus was already taking on the lead. As the pack started to charge the group, Noah’s arrow would fly towards the wolf he was aiming at, finding its home in the beast’s body. It was a solid hit but not strong enough to take the creature down. Greyhowl seemed to notice his master’s attack and went charging towards the wounded beast, ready to rip his teeth right into the creature as well.

Just the sight of these wolves was causing a twisted feeling in Noah’s stomach. Something was very wrong with them. It looked like they were no longer just a beast but also part plant. Was this the work of those naturalist Caroline spoke of before at the inn?

Location: The Forest North of Fineweald

The Alpha Wolf, having thought that the old man was a walking snack, was surprised when he leaped in and Morpheus dodged his attack, only to strike back twice with his clubs. He yelped, backed up, and lunged forward only for Destiny’s crossbow bolt to sink into his skull.

He dropped to the forest floor like a sack of potatoes, the sickly green sap that ran from his yellow eyes drying up while the light behind said eyes dimmed to nothingness. A mere heart-beat of time passed before your group watched that, while amongst the chaos of battle, the large wolf began to dissipate into the air, his body falling away from his bones like ash.

A blink later, and there was no wolf body to investigate, only a pile of darkened soot that bled into the ground.

You notice the bleeding wounds from the other wolves doens't run the familiar red of a wounded creature, but black. Tar black, like they have sludge running through their veins and giving them life.

The other wolves, seeing their alpha die in front of them, snarl and redouble their efforts!

-10 EN for Noah’s normal attack
+10 EN for Greyhowl’s lack of action

Noah’s arrow seemed to do little more than annoy the foul creature. Still, the beast seemed to turn most of his attention towards Greyhowl, which sucked for the big beast but he was here for that sort of role. Noah took a deep breath and focused his next arrow, poised it straight at the beast’s skull. As a once alive famous man said, who was now dead “Don't Fire Till You See the Whites of Their Eyes". Noah couldn’t remember who to give credit for such a helpful quote, but he would live by their words for the moment.

The beast seemed to charge towards Greyhowl and was even able to sink its claws into his familiar’s hide. As it did this, Noah’s next arrow lined itself up with the creature’s head. His eyes followed the beast’s movement, learning the pattern it would naturally sway its head and soon became aware of the ability to slightly predict this movement. Once he was comfortable with this prediction, he would let his arrow fly towards its mark. A yelp of pain caused Noah’s face to gain a slightly cocking smirk. “Bullseye.” He muttered under his breath.

Greyhowl took a quick notice that his prey was no longer a threat. He was still snarling towards Corrupt Wolf D, keeping his distance after being minorly injured from the previous wolf. He would though watch and wait for any sort of movement or action that the wolf might try to pull. If the beast would rush for Greyhowl’s master, the large direwolf would attempt to intercept him. Noah would go ahead and notched another arrow in his bow and start to aim towards the next wolf. The allies that were with him seemed rather strong and competent though, so he had little worries that they would need assistance.

_____Morpheus seriously wanted to uppercut the felis for calling him old man, lucky for him he had another issue to deal with before him. Arm moving to move the person using him for cover aside before Morpheus was tackled to the ground and got to glare into the face of one of the wolves. At this point if he was still slightly off his own rocker he would claim the tree clearly turned the wolves to their side as the hunting group, but seeing as he was having to use his cane to stop it from biting he had little time to toy with his conspiracy.

I am not old... I AM AGED WITH EXPERIENCE!"

_____Morpheus pressed against the wolf's chest with everything he had to try and throw it off him, sadly he was only really able to likely get it pushed up enough for him to crawl out from under as Morpheus grumbled and tried to roll his shoulder. His cane had a few bite marks, causing the old fool to growl more as he glared down the one responsible for the bite marks and his sore muscles.

"I'll detain this pesky, we need information! I told you the trees did this!!!!"

_____With that Morpheus rushed forward to try and break the legs of the wolf to bring it down and make sure it was far less a threat to the group, while keeping it alive enough so they could double check what was happening here. if his actions bare fruit Morpheus would sit on the neck of the Wolf to keep the head down so it could not bite someone so easily even if he got hurt Intel was needed.

Well, if she’d thought a bolt to the head was the best way of getting on the pack’s good side, she was wrong. I never thought that! Des yelped in her head as she scrambled backwards, finally managing to plug the damn bolt into her hand crossbow. A (+) sign appeared on the bolt case and then on the make and model of the weapon. The ranger squinted at it, momentarily distracted by the Hunting perk. Did I buy the wrong bolts? Son of a bitch, they weren’t transferable?

A corrupted wolf took advantage of this bullshit to slam into her like a bad day of blackberry picking and Des went down faster than the alpha wolf, yelling louder than a two-year-old who’d scraped their knee. “God dammit!” Thank God she had a one-handed weapon—her other hand desperately tried to hold the animal’s razor-sharp fangs at bay, the furry black glove punctured viciously by the brambles encircling the creature’s neck. “I said back!”

With her other hand, propping up her elbow on the ground and barely leveraging the weapon, Des slammed the trigger. The bolt jammed. Arright. Seems predictable in hindsight. Thankfully, with a swift assist from Noah (did he even know she was here? Did she need to yell again?) the critter was down. As soon as it rolled off her, its flesh began to dissipate and crumble, blowing away like dust.

    Destiny’s eyes narrowed. “Huh.”

No time to think about that—she rolled to her feet, massaging her hand where the thorns had sunk past her hand-armor (what the hell was the point of wearing gloves if they couldn’t even hold off a snakebite or a spiny corrupted monster? No wonder all those Black Wolf bandits had gone down like a stack of cards once they’d raided the fortress). What she saw was Morpheus sticking his whole damn head in range to get bitten off by the damn corrupted wolf he was trying to rip the limbs off of. “Are you kidding me? Pops, get back. You lose an ear in this game, it don’t regrow!”

Not realizing that Morpheus intended to keep the wolf alive, only seeing his (apparent) peril, Des shook her crossbow to break up the jam, lined it up, and fired. She had a good angle on its head and thankfully the old man was keeping it still enough that she could make a headshot without hitting him too. She saw the bolt open a gaping tear in the beast’s cheek before embedding in the roof of its mouth, bolt protruding from the other side. “Hoo! Close one.”

Milah watched as the alpha wolf was slain, the body slumping into the ground even as the “life” energy it possessed dissipated into nothing… before the body followed suit. Much like the blackened flora that the Felis touched earlier, her amber eyes watched the corpse of the mutated wolf turn into ash around the forest. It was gonna be a bit hard investigating these creatures if they were just gonna poof into a handful of soot.

Anyone have anything we can use to trap one of them?!

Just as Milah spoke however another wolf yelped as an arrow found its mark, slumping also to the ground in defeat. Surprisingly it was Morpheus who actually attempted to detain one of the two remaining creatures, struggling to keep the beast’s jaws and claws away from him as he grappled the beast… only to have a bolt from Destiny slay the already weakened beast with one hit.

Really?! Was that necessary when there’s another very lively one not far away?!

Milah frowned at the other player, almost baffled really at the fact that the crazy old coot Morpheus had been the only other one to think the same way as she had… and he’d even grappled the beast very well too, until Destiny killed it of course.

Can we try capturing this last one? It might be useful in figuring out just what the hell is wrong with these things and these woods.

Carefully an arrow was nocked, the wolf seemingly keeping its attention on Noah and the dire wolf, before Milah allowed it to fly into one of the hind legs of the beast. She didn’t have anything she could use to capture the corrupted beast… but if she could incapacitate its movements enough maybe Morpheus could try and grapple it into the ground like before.

_____Morpheus was not so happy his work against the second wolf was ruined, but after a few grumbling seconds he moved away from what was really left of the wolf and set his focus to the next. He would have preferred a less lively threat or weakened but this was war! You work with what you got and improvise the rest like any real soldier did! Rushing to the last seen threat Morpheus figured to take a slightly bolder approach to make up for the difference.

_____With a minor running start Morpheus Jumped onto the back of the wolf, hand shoving his cane into the mouth of the creature before quickly moving to slam the under throat of the beast with his club. Gripping both sides of the club before he tugged back towards his frame with as much might as he could to limit the flow of air the beast could breath (hopefully anyways). Leaning back to further give him room to try and choke the wolf out so it was less dangerous to approach later.

-10 EN for throwing a net

“Oh! That’s a good idea. I have the hunters and beast mastery skill. Maybe I can wrangle up it?” Noah opened up his inventory screen and cycled through until he found the icon he was looking for. The icon was a net like image that would pull forth his net trap. It was a simple skill and not one he used often, so he prayed that it would work alright this go around.

    skill
    Net Trap

Noah’s net would fling out towards the wolf in hopes that it would catch the beast off guard and be sturdy enough to tangle up the beast in its woven threads. The weights on the net would attempt to drag the wolf to the ground and possibly cause the beast to become exhausted from trying to struggle and break free. Noah was a bit skeptical that it would work seeing how he didn’t have much experience using the skill and he probably would throw it in a manner that was less effective than it needed to be.

"Shit, I don't think my net is going to work...hopefully you guys have a plan B or maybe a C..."

No wonder the other hunter’s net trap wasn’t gonna go the way he’d planned—Morpheus was on top of the damn thing! Least that meant it was still enough to get a good shot at, but hell, it needed something stronger than a little toss like you were huntin’ sardines off the side of a canoe.

Des had one trap. But it was a good net trap, she’d used it plenty of times, and it was primed and loaded (halleluiah, she’d known they were gonna need to restrain some critters out here) and she knew the bolts fit on this one. “Here goes,” she muttered as she pulled her spare hand crossbow out of her pack. It was set with a huge, loosely-threaded net mostly made for trapping flocks of bird en masse (and whenever Des wanted a hammock to snooze in.) Just because it was multipurpose didn’t mean it wasn’t functional, though! Never tried to catch a plant-dog in it…

God damn, Morpheus was making this hard being right up in the middle of the action. He was doing a hell of a job, don't get her wrong, but she couldn't avoid catching him in the trap alongside the monster. She’d just have to hope her net was big enough that if it fell, the two would get tangled up independently instead of all in one biting-clawing-damaging package. “Watch out, pops! Net Loss incoming!”

She pointed her crossbow trap overhead and fired. The trap activated and a bundle of netting spun overhead for about a second before it ballooned and descended on the battling duo. Hope this works. If not, well, they were gonna have zilch to examine after this little encounter, and the trail to uncover what the hell was going on would be cold. Cold and ash.

Milah hadn’t really worked much with the hunting mastery, aside from the usual forest tracking and pursuing skills. In fact the Felis had put more effort into discerning the weak points of creatures to try and max out her damage output versus actually thinking about capturing anything. As a result she didn’t have any nets like Noah or trapping tools… but she could improvise of course.

With the other teammates rushing the beast Milah took a few moments to rummage through her backpack, finding a long rope after a few moments. Hastily she tied it at the end of one of her arrows, nocking the item into her bowstring and taking a moment to aim. Eyes closed as the Felis focused on her breathing first, reaching a stable rhythm, before amber eyes finally focused on the corrupted creature.

She spotted an area that looked somewhat weak and already wounded, firing the arrow after making sure the other end of the rope was safely tied around her hand and gripped. Her attempt would, with some luck, embed itself into the hind leg of the beast and give her a way to try and restrain the movement of that particular limb.

True, it wasn’t the best of plans… but it was something.

    Captured!

Location: The Forest North of Fineweald
Time of Day: Late Afternoon (think 2:50pm)

The corrupted wolves fell to the forest floor and disappeared into what seemed like black ash. There was nothing left of their forms, not even the bones that would’ve held them together. Only the cloying scent of dead flowers perfumed the air, sinking into your nostrils and making you gag.

However, your ministrations against the final wolf seemed to work. Through ingenuity and team-work, you manage to restrain the beast which also allowed Morpheus to move out of the way/off the creature (if he desired to do so).

Now, looking at the creature, you can see the similarities between it and a regular wolf of the forest. Their builds were identical, but the differences between it and a regular wolf were varied. The fur, for example, seemed to have been completely replaced with grass, moss, and leaves from the forest. Not a spec of actual fur remained. The tail was a conglomeration of briars and rose thorns. The talons looked to be made of tree bark, though just as deadly as regular claws.

The eyes, rolling in their sockets due to fear and being restrained, were an odd hazel that seemed luminous in the little bit of light that managed to filter in through the canopy. The teeth were the only thing that seemed familiar, though these were much sharper, and the muzzle had seemingly elongated to fit all of them within.

In the places where the Corrupted Wolf has been wounded, you can see the familiar black tar seeping out of those injuries. The scent reminds you of blood, but the look is nothing of the sort. Vibrant neon green sap continues to feel from the Wolf’s eyes, even as he snaps and snarls at the lot of you, trying to get his feet beneath him so he can break free of your trap and scamper away.

However, for now, you have him.

What would you like to do?

    Investigating Corrupted Wolf

It worked… somehow, and against plenty of odds no doubt, the group’s makeshift and rushed attempts had succeeded in securing the beast.

A sigh of relief escaped Milah’s lips, regaining the breath the Felis hadn’t realized she’d been holding onto until their success had been apparent. It was then, as the adrenaline slowly ebbed away, that eh stench of the fallen creatures hit her sensitive nostrils--causing the Felis to gag audibly as her hands quickly rose to cover her hose and mouth.

Fortunately she hadn’t eaten or drank anything in the Drowning Guppy, so there was nothing immediate for her stomach to return as the teen managed to regain control after a few moments. Only then did Milah dare move closer to the restrained beast, amber eyes carefully going over the creature with some admiration.

It’s like… it’s like the forest turned into a wolf.

Though baffled about how such a thing could even happen the teen couldn’t help but be amazed the more she studied the creature. Of course nothing like this would ever be possible IRL but here, in a game world filled with magic and mystery, well the game was quickly showing Milah that anything indeed seemed possible. Milah wondered just how sentient the creature truly was or if it was acting out of some type of instinct from… whatever had aided in the creation of this beast.

Caroline had said the beings that passed through the two had been looking for nature spirits, right?

A part of Milah wondered if perhaps there were any clue on the body of this wolf that could help the team discern if this would be a creation by such entities, carefully moving closer and inspecting the beast. The tar like substance that leaked from the wounds smelled like blood, though that was the only similarities both substances would ever share. A hand reached to gingerly touch the fur like moss that covered the hind leg, wondering if there would be any muscle fibers underneath, before moving up along the body of the wolf--keeping away from the claws and jaws.

Milah wasn’t an expert in RL biology of course, but she had spent hours and hours researching about the world in TS on her free time… perhaps something somewhere in the various forums and wiki pages the teen had read could explain how this was possible?

Des actually was learned in biology. The fact that Des knew what she was doing in her daily life, unfortunately, didn’t actually help her. Like it did most of the time when she tried to apply real-life knowledge to a Terrasphere situation, it tended to made things harder. Terrasphere was the most realistic game out there, but that didn’t mean it always stuck true to real-world logic.

Destiny Divebird squatted down by the animal, tangled in netting, and looked it over without touching. Made of plants. Oozing sap. Its fellows disintegrating into ash upon death, as if whatever had been animating them had been snuffed out like a candle flame.

She rocked back on her heels. “Yep. Magic.” And she stood up.

That was it. No biopsy, no tongue-checking, no system of cause and effect the way someone might treat a real wolf brought in from the field. The thing was magic, and magic didn’t necessarily follow science. It burst into ash when it died. She didn’t need a microscope to tell the damn thing was powered by something bigger than biology, and whatever that was had corrupted it and turned it into some kinda walking venus flytrap. That was the virus. This was just the symptom.

“Where there’s one, there’s gotta be more. These guys are comin’ outta somewhere.” Des looked around, squinting, and held her thumb and forefinger to her temple as she triggered Investigation mode. Tracks lit up like constellations across her vision, the Hunting skill pinpointing the wolves’ path before they’d ambushed the old man on the path. Des walked in a circle, following them backwards, before sighting a clear line towards their source. It vanished further into the woods.

    Figures. Well, let's try this.
She pursed her lips in a whistle. There was a distant whistle back from the treetops, the first sign of birdsong the party had encountered. Without looking, Des waved her hand over her head towards the trail, whistling another long, lilting note. A small shadow passed across the ground as a little blackbird flitted overhead, disappearing into the trees. There.

“Mm. Trail leads that way.” Des pointed, turning back to the rest of the group. The black-haired ranger trotted back over to the bound wolf. She clapped @Morpheus on the shoulder. “Nice one, way to hold this critter steady while we bagged him down.” Destiny hitched her mouth to the side, nudging the beast’s paw with the toe of her boot. “What d’you all say we string this one up somewhere safe and come back for it? Might be good to hang onto it alive, hell, maybe some alchemist can make a cure we can test on it later or somethin’.”

Damn it.. His net missed the wolf, thankfully he was not the only hunter among the mix and they were able to still rangle the wolf to the ground. They all seemed rather curious on what sort of beast it was, even Greyhowl went over to sniff it. Seeing the black liquid seeping out of the wolf caused Noah’s stomach to turn slightly. “Could nature magic alone do something like this? I’d think they’d need to be using something a bit more malicious. Seems like the exact opposite of nature’s whole deal.” He tried to run his fingers over the various vines and other odd plant extensions on the beast’s body but with it constantly wiggling around it was hard to do that.

Noah stood back up and started to look around the forest. It was clear that the path from which they just ventured down was much greener than the forest that was up ahead. “Jeez, I can’t see anybody that loves nature do something like this. Its supposed to be spring in game right? Why does this area of the forest look like winter or summer during a drought? Nothing is alive anymore. I’m afraid just leaning on a tree would cause it to tumble on over.”

He patted his trusted companion. “Why don’t you go ahead and do some scouting bud. Stay close by though, don’t want you to become like one of these guys.” The beast licked Noah’s hand and trotted off down the trail that Destiny had found a moment before. “Probably a good idea to do that, it might try to go warn whomever turned it into this monster that we’re coming.”
