The day had run like any other. She had spent a good portion of it on her studies, done a little shopping, and taken a shower before heading to work. She had finished her shift and walked the few blocks home. Tossing her bag on the sofa as she stepped through her living room, she had made her way to the kitchen, poured herself a glass of milk and gone to sit at her computer desk. After booting the computer up, she had opened her emails to check and see if she had gotten any responses from her professors. She found nothing from them, which, at this point was a good sign, seeing as she had turned her term papers for two of her courses in just the day before. “No news is good news.” She had mused out loud, as she moved her mouse pointer to click the link that would log her out of her email.
Just as she had been about to click the logout link, her right pointer finger had stopped just above the button on the mouse, though. She had just caught the change in her screen as a new email had come in. The subject line was riddled with odd symbols. Raising a brow as her curiosity got the best of her, she had clicked to open the unknown message. ~Welcome, you have been invited to be a part of Terrasphere. Open this email in your VR adapter to download and install the client. For your personal safety, do not post about Terasphere on social media or admit to connecting to our server online.~ “For my personal safety? Well, that doesn't sound ominous at all.” She said to herself, as she proceeded to log out of her email.
Standing from her seat at her desk, she had made her way up the stairs of her small apartment to her bedroom, intending to sleep, though that did not wind up being the case. As she stepped into her bedroom, her blue hues landed on her VR gear laying across the room from her bed. It had been some time since she had actually taken the time to allow herself the pleasure of a relaxing game or new experience. She was off tomorrow, too, so why not? This was the process of her thoughts as she stepped over to pick up her gear, placing the visor over her eyes and reaching to flip the switch on it, as she moved to lay on her bed. Taking a moment to access her email from the gear she had started the download for the game. It only took a few moments, before she heard the whir of the fans in the visor clicking on and her eyes filled with a bright light, the word TERASPHERE filling her vision in a dark green color.
The brightness of the light lasted for only a few seconds before everything went black. Her optics blinking, slowly to try to adjust to the difference. Through the shifting shadows, she could tell she was in a square room, though it took her a moment to be able to focus. Once her eyes had finally adjusted, she could see before her.....Herself? It was an odd sensation, staring at the un-moving figure; a little unsettling in some ways, but she moved towards the seemingly inanimate thing, anyway. Please prepare to sculpt your character. She heard the sound of the words as they seemed to fill the air around her, and she tilted her head a bit, her red hair falling across her shoulders as she did. It seemed, already, that this game was definitely going to be a new experience. Looking the figure in front of her over, she reached her right hand out and pressed her index finger against its cheek.
As her fingertip touched against the thing's cheek, the 'flesh' seemed to move like clay, and a small smirk lit on the woman's dark pink-tinted lips. “I get it.” She said as she moved her hands to begin pushing her fingers against the face of the figure, her palms sliding against it in places. She stayed silent as she worked, her brow knitting in concentration. After a few moments, she took a step back to look at her work, giving a satisfied nod, before she began to work on the shoulders and arms of the figure. She seemed to become almost lost in her work of reshaping the model of herself. The entire process took what seemed like an hour to her. By the time she finished and stepped back once more to look at her work, the figure looked nothing like her.
It's hair hung in a single ponytail down its left shoulder; it's color a dark, bluish-gray contrasting well with the red tie around it. The figure's eyes were a light hazel green that would have blended perfectly with the mossy bark sometimes found on trees. It's nose was slender, turned up at the end and its cheekbones sat high on its face. Its ears had been elongated and pointed, pushing out from its head, and the frame itself was a bit taller than her own. The clothing it wore on its now more slender; taller frame resembled that of an old-school Dungeons and Dragons rogue, though less bulky and much more maneuverable. The buckles and snaps that ran along the front of the sleeveless trench-like coat holding it closed against the perfectly proportioned chest and down its nearly flat abdomen. The shorts it wore were a dark gray as was the coat. Beneath the coat, she had managed to sculpt a white, sleeveless shirt and she had left the underwear originally on the figure. Satisfied with her work, she simply said “Done.”
As the single word left her lips, she felt a pulse of energy run through her, the sensation almost causing her to lose her breath. The darkness of the room was replaced with bright light, and she had a sensation of falling. Her breath caught in her throat as her body jerked with the sudden motion. She was plummeting, but where to? What exactly was this game going to be like? No sound left her lips as she pondered over the thought; her eyes trying to focus on something that seemed, at this point, to not be there. There was nothing to be seen; nothing to be felt. It was as if she were falling into a bright void in the space around her. At least it felt as such until she felt her body come to a slamming stop.
The sudden stop was unexpected. The impact knocked the air from her lungs and she nearly let out a cry of pain. She felt the stabbing of branches and twigs in her limbs and back as she heard the rustle of leaves and her eyes finally focused once more. Above herself, she could see only green. Beneath herself, she could feel the hard, rough surface of a tree's branch. Rolling, slowly, to her left, she managed to get one hand positioned against the branch to push herself up. Carefully moving, making sure not to slip, she let her hues scan the area she could see around and below her. She had obviously landed in a tree, but what else was near? Where exactly was she?
Pondering over these thoughts for only a moment, she let her eyes travel down, taking note of the slightly large branch below her. The tree was rather large and there were many branches stretching from its trunk below her. Thinking about it for a moment, she slid from the branch she now sat on. Her hands held onto the branch as she lowered herself down to the next one. Her body ached in ways she hadn't known possible as she slowly made her way down, using the tree as a natural ladder. As she reached the last branch she stopped, taking a moment to judge the distance between herself and the ground. It seemed she still had a few feet to go. Taking a deep breath, she flipped from the branch, letting her body plummet to the ground below.
She landed on her feet. That much she was thankful for, but JESUS the realism of this game was already more than she had bargained for. She had taken the realistic setting for pain, too. The bumps and bruises to her body already had her wanting to tear up and the sudden jarring of her frame surely didn't help. She held back the sudden urge to scream, though, as she turned her head to let her light greenish-brown colored hues take in her current surroundings. She was in a forest. That much she could tell, and so far it seemed as if she was alone. As the game had come with no instructions, she could only assume that she had nothing other than her clothing and herself, as well. She also had no idea of the actual purpose of the game, but that was something that could be saved for later to answer.
Taking a deep breath as she looked around, she began to move forward. She wasn't so much knowledgeable on the ways of the woods, so to speak, but she was certain that standing in one spot wasn't going to get her anywhere. She knew enough about surviving to know that would be her best bet. It would definitely be better than standing around here waiting for something to happen; especially in a forest of which she knew nothing of the wildlife or anything else. She could only hope, as she made her way through the trees, her ears twitching to the sound of the leaves beneath her feet, that she would find either another player or a village of some sort before she happened to run into something more sinister than a tall tree.
