    Biting!

Biting everywhere! Underneath her skin, in her eyes, in her nose, her skin, her teeth, her brain, her heart! Luna's skin crawled and her eyes watered, her fingers twitching as she immediately launched away from where she was standing, praying to god that whatever that feeling was would go away if that strange monster of a girl couldn't see her! Her breathing was heavy, but she turned to see the Nyx assassin girl be taken down by @Ezra which made her smile.

But there was another threat. Sloth. But it seemed that @Comet was well on her way to deal with that. Sloth just needed a small push to throw her over the edge.

But Luna didn't exactly push lightly. A pillar of crimson engulfed her the minute that she gripped her staff again, her power growing exponentially by the moment. And from that crimson pillar, a figure seemed to emerge, a giant arcane fist launching itself at Sloth.

    Engulfing her...

    He did hear her.

And as an arrow became a meteor, Cain flashed a thumbs up at @Comet , all the way from the other side of the battlefield. He was in a good mood now, his steps rhythmic, his voice clear, his flag dancing, spotless amidst the carnage. This was where he thrived, casting moonlight upon the darkest night, and even as specters emerged, possessing the corpses of dead children, familiar children, the midnight haired muse remained dauntless.

Shadowflame burned ever darker, while the remains of Youn pulled dark power out from impossible deaths, saturating the world in further darkness. Nyx appeared from nowhere, her blades scratching against Ezra’s armor, and a third, unknown child began to amass magical energy in the direction of their arcane artillery. All the while, a sanguine fog descended upon them all, the repulsive stench of rest settling over them.

But if he would falter where Shana would stand? Hah, fucking hell, there was no way he’d ever allow himself to be so weak.

A blessed arrow cut through the air, almost crippling the devourer.

A pulsating axe dug deep into the assassin, disabling her attack options.

A combo attack erased the bellringer from existence.

    Arcanamancy again, huh?

The scepter of Youn within Cain’s phantom ensemble shuddered slightly at the display, but the flagbearer smiled still. As quickly as they had arrived, the trio of demons were vanquished and disabled. Envoy of Chaos she may be, but Ananth wasn’t a real monster after all. She was naught but a shadow of herself, her red, black, and white aesthetic overused and boring. The Beast may have been awoken. Their Mortality may be at hand. The next round was probably going to be all sorts of awful.

    But Cain wasn’t concerned.

No. He was painting the very image of a man who wasn’t concerned.

Walking through the battlefield with his hands out, his eyes looking straight at the one eyed demon, the Flagbearer of Miracles breathed in. Out.

“Shana, give us your best healing magic and get out of here! Didn’t I tell you? Us immortals are stupidly strong, but we still don’t have enough leeway to protect you as well! So just trust in us and enjoy the show!”

He didn’t need to see her corpse at the end of this.

The Harmonic Symphony surged around Luna, an ethereal shroud that mended her scars, as Cain raised his voice, higher, brighter, a spotlight of azure within the scarlet shroud.

The impeding doom. The soul eradicating flame. In a cerulean starburst, they were all scoured, leaving naught but the light of a small, small miracle.

The party had four targets to take on. They choose to ignore one and instead take on the other three.

El, grant me your power to aid those in need.

Shana whispered with newfound strength as Cain told her to act.

Eternal Flame, gather around and sooth their pain. PHOENIX ROOST!

A warm feeling, not unlike the love of a mother, came over everybody as soothing flames started dancing around the battlefield. A fire that was meant to create, rather than destroy, was something the group had much needed!

I'll leave the rest to you!

And with those words, the red-hair finally left the battlefield.

Nyx fell with some quick attention from Ezra, taking the now unconscious girl into her iron grip, the heartless woman intended well to use her as a body shield.

Youn, or rather Sloth, on the other hand, had to face a much harsher beating. Taking Comet's hit without an interrupt to her cast it was ultimately Luna's fist that obliterated Sloth. It came hard, impactful, quick. Leaving only a little puddle that was, just as any other wound, slowly absorbed by Anath. Youn's corpse defiled even further.

Gluttony, in the mean-time, was supposed to be quite happy about her meal as she closed her mouth despite two arrows sticking from her body. Where Luna had just been moments ago, was now an endless void that even the Red Mist wasn't able to cover.

    Om nom nom~~

Her happy, stuffed, face that chewed on the fabrics of reality suddenly turned into one of rage and anger. A taste was missing.

Urgh... I TOLD YOU! I AM HUNGRY!

And she repeated her spiel again on another victim: Cain.

    img"Victory draws near..."

The Crimson Demon whispered as she was brimming with energy. She had been ignored. Completely. Left to herself. They would now pay for that insolence.

With a sonic boom, the one-eyed Anath crashed into Nyx, into Ezra, into Madison. Her hands grabbing each of them. They were unimportant. Not her main target, but dragged alongside the dirt nonetheless. Even as Anath's horns dug deep into Comet's belly, the demon didn't stop. It were just a few, but nonetheless lethal, meters until her back crashed into a wall together with Madison. Nyx was lost in the mist, Ezra left in the dust.

Anath took a few steps back as she shoved Comet's body off her horns. Her mutilated opponents were left alive. For a moment, Anath crooked her head to the others.

    They killed her child.
    They would suffer.
    A new target?
    Someone would die.

    Something would happen.

But they could always try to run...

Cycle 7 - ...in which Nom Nom just wants food.

    It hadn’t been enough.

Somewhere in her brain, there was a tiny voice screaming at her about using a defenseless child as a shield against a demon battering ram. Before, it was easy to ignore. This was the thick of battle, their lives were on the line, and the stupid little kid had basically done a sneak attack on her. Sure, it wasn’t a lot of damage but even now, sprawled on the ground, Ezra could feel blood pooling inside her armor.

She could taste it on the back of her tongue and as she slowly, painfully, lifted her head from the ground, she managed to spit a large wad of it on the ground. Stark red like strawberries or cherries. The color stood out bright and vibrant against the dead land beneath her ragged body. Perhaps holding onto a child and a demon while said demon went charging down the warpath hadn’t been the smartest idea.

The Death Knight blinked. For a moment, she was confused because the red haze was still there, still circling. It made the rest of the battlefield almost impossible to see. She had completely lost Luna…again and, when she turned her head in the other direction, she was met with the sight of Madison and Comet’s equally broken bodies splayed out on the ground. Her heart fell into her stomach, the spike of adrenaline manifesting as a startled cry of pain slash worry.

But they moved, at least a little, and Cain’s haunting music was still manifesting somewhere…out there. She had to hope that Luna was okay, that Cain was watching over her. Which meant she had to watch over Comet and Madison and if that meant another visit to the temple, to those creepy chanting fuck-faces that never actually appeared, then so be it.

She heaved herself up, feeling the shock of agony radiate through her system. She pushed it away, licked her bloody lips, heaved her great ax up and brought it down on Anath’s head.

    Everything was pain.

At first, the situation was fine. They killed the lazy one and disabled the psycho one. Great! Good job, everyone!

    And then it wasn't fine.

There was a rush of dust, a loud, primal scream, and suddenly a set of claws in the soft flesh of her belly. And then a sharp pain that spread from her back and head, sending electricity through every fiber of her being.

Madison fell to the ground, broken. Even the thought of stirring hurt enough to make her reconsider.

She still had the strength to sigh out an F-bomb with the longest fuse.

Suck it up, Maddy. On your feet. Your friends are dying.

    No. Don't wanna'.

Just get the fuck up. Lucia'll be pissed if you all die here today.

    She doesn't get pissed, though.

Okay, so she'll be disappointed, then. Do you want that?

Madison shuddered, sending a fresh wave of hell rippling through her muscles. Something was definitely broken.

    Get up, Madison.

And so, she did. Despite everything decidedly not being fine. The plagueslinger pushed herself up to first to her hands and knees, then paused. Deep breath. In and out. There you go. Ignore that beeping in your ear of your UI telling you it's time to take a break. No rest for the wicked, or for those who rely on her.

Slowly but surely, Madison rose to her feet, her right arm wrapped around her torso as if it were keeping her intestines from spilling out. Thankfully, her bleeding was relatively minimal compared to the other damage the scantily-clad demoness did to her body.

Madison looked around the battlefield. If she got dragged all the way over here--

And then she saw them. Ezra and Comet. Life quickly spilling out of their broken bodies from the combined attacks of Anath and Nyx.

The druidess fumbled for her corrupted playing cards. She'd need every ounce of energy she could muster to patch the two ladies up.

Her UI continued to scream at her. You're dying too.

She didn't care. Wouldn't be the first time she'd be willing to get herself killed for a friend.

But then another ping rang out. A message from Cain, sent to everyone in the party. A promise that he and Madison would revive Ezra and Comet if the two women would throw every ounce of strength they could into taking down the demoness.

And Madison froze. Cain was relying on her to survive just one more attack from Anath. The bard was thinking about the long term play. Thing was, it made perfect sense. If Madison died trying to heal the death knight and the archer, then they were probably all fucked anyway. The demoness would respond with a swipe of her hand, undo all of Maddy's fine work, and Ezra and Comet would fall anyway.

After a pause to think things over one last time, Madison closed her eyes and cast her spell, an apology unspoken on her lips.

Anath's hasty decision to get revenge on the hard-hitting woman, who once triumphantly and courageously stood her ground, proved to be devastating. The tearing of horns at her flesh burned, and Comet convulsed during the impact. She was too shocked to move. She couldn't attack either. A scorching, bone-deep pain traveled from her stomach to the rest of a numbed body. In comparison to the horned demon the tall Archer seemed a little, helpless girl. As they moved she regain focus, much to her dismay, for having to realize what was going on made Comet shriek. But that noise would soon be muffled upon their second collision. Her back slamming into a wall from behind. Anath appeared to be satisfied when letting go of her victim. Bleeding out. Facing traumatizing, dizzying pain and shakes that rendered more than simply her hands temporarily unusable.

With shriveled lungs, a tear-streaked face, and torn armor as well as flesh the pink-haired woman remained on the ground. Watched as her teammates fought back. To regain energy from such a strenuous attack. Such a demoralizing action from the relentless demon. A burning sensation remained, but adrenaline fueled by the unending fight as well as hatred for Anath continued to numb her body as if a medicine. When her vision became clear once more Comet pulled herself up. Refusing to so much as peer down at what may be of her mutilated torso. At what may be made up of bruises and gruesome wounds and humiliating look overall.

Horns penetrated armor, and skin and went deeper. Touched her weak soul. With one last attempt to prove herself the stronger one the Archer drew her bow, an arrow soon shooting through the skies, but stumbled over onto her knees shortly after. Emerald eyes glared. Hoped yet knew the situation wasn't quite in her favor as per usual. Escaping death in-game had been easy thus far. This mission would begin that dreaded, shameful count only existing to grow long after. They watched as a powerful pierce of the tip struck Anath. Though inside she knew - due to previous hits - that it would mean nothing. At least Cain had some sort of faith for the future. A plan that had her back in so quickly after death her pale skin grew whiter. It would take everything within the young woman to carry on as easily as her teammate, but it would happen. There wouldn't be a choice anyways. To defeat the demons? That's their mission to complete or die trying, she reminded herself.

He was sending them to their deaths.

    He was aware of that.

He would have liked to prevent that.

But they were immortal for a reason, and he had power over life and death. So he would watch them go out with a bang and pull them back from death to fight all over again. His dominion was miracles, massacre, victory grasped with bloody hands.

So it was about time he wagered his own body, wasn’t it?

The last whispers of his song left him as Cain flourished his flagstaff, three steps akin to a ballet dance sending him away from the spatial bite of the gluttonous dragon loli. As he did, the Flagbearer smirked, turning around the face the almost-dead girl. A wink, a blown kiss, and then…

“C’mon girl, at this rate, all you’ll be eating is dirt! If you want some of this meat, how bout you try a bit harder? Your attempts so far have been absolutely slothful~!”

Ninety five health points. That was far more than what he had against that bitch Funi. He was going to die for his words one day, of course, but the midnight haired muse had no intention of letting today be that day.

…well, not like things were relaxed enough that he could spend an entire turn focused on defending himself.

A breath, another song, and his voice rang out clear through the hazy battlefield again, an elegy to the dead, promising glory eternal within the mead halls of the ring holder and immortality gained through the bard’s song and dance.

Harmonics melted with the arcane, a myriad of threads weaving and focusing the brilliant spell craft that Luna was already in the midst of casting. But this song wasn’t just for her.

Nay, it was a song for the dying, for the valiants that fought even now. He couldn’t promise Valhalla, but he could promise resurrection.

    Live, Fight, Die.

Cain could promise that eternal cycle, at least.

More fighting, more damage, never stopping. More charge, more death, more power. More power! MORE POWER!

It grew higher and higher as she built up and cast, the arcane energy flowing freely, willing itself to be unleashed in destructive waves and blasts. Her lilac energy tinting crimson as she began to lose herself to the hum of the power flowing through her veins. Even with her energy waning and fading away, she felt stronger than she'd ever been. No need to move. No need to hide. She could just blow everything away. Yes. Everything could be returned to dust underneath her power, just like Sloth.

And more power flowed into her, sucked into her staff as Cain added his own words, his own feelings, into her spell. But they were worthless. Everything was worthless now. All that mattered was raw power. More power! More of it! Destroy Anath! Destroy the forest!

    Destroy the world...

A pillar of magical circles formed around her, before multiple bolts of arcane power shattered apart and rushed at Anath at high speeds, pelting her like machine gun fire. Horns and blood. Her friends! Death was coming! Death was coming!

"ANATH!" A scream, so different from her own voice, was torn from her throat. "BLEED! DIE!"

One never got used to the feeling of magical healing it was so much different than anything else; he remembered how brad used to patch people up. His was a glow that worked from the outside and helped the body to repair itself, while Cain’s so was more of a war cry that ran the circuit of his veins. He healed faster, but that was not all he usually did it was like a booster shot in the body that drove a man forward. But Shana’s was different this was like being born again in a certain way. So different from the black flames that brought pain, as he watched his scraps close and his scars fade. Cracking his finger as he took it all in that was the stuff a nice little bit of power. Aalam watched her leave the field; he was grateful at least one of them would still be alive when this was all over; however his focus went the girl and back to the one that was wearing a human’s skin.

Scanning the field for targets, Ezra had managed to take down Nyx and was using her body as a shield. A bit of a laugh escaped him at that didn’t think that she would have been able to do that back in the first event. She was getting a bit tougher that was both a shame and a well a comfort. She might not get killed one day his shoulder still ached from time to time even though he knew there was nothing wrong with him. Gluttony was still up and causing a problem and would have to be killed his shot had missed her heart, unfortunately, however, he didn’t have time to correct that. Anath still loving to pretty and that needed to be changed, so he aimed from his behind his structure trying to get a bead as they moved across the field in and out of his line of sight. However, it was a no-go, too many people moving and Anath herself was a smaller target, he was going to have to move from cover if he was going to make this shot. So, he moved out from behind the piece of wall to get to an open area of the field. He was able to catch Comet’s shot there was a good chance that the girl might turn out to be a better shot than him and that was humbling.

There was still a job to be done, however, so he aimed Anath with a shield breaker, one of the heavier arrows that he had made to but a person down. To make sure they weren’t getting back up ever, so he drew in a breath as he held the weight of his bow. Letting go on release aiming to put it where her heart should be.

    Bloody Rondo

They were relentless in their assault. Attack after attack, they kept pounding away. Without regards to their own safety, without regards for the to death bleeding fighters. Without fear...?

Ezra's ax sliced down, Anath dodged, purposefully. Yet, not completely successful. The Deathknight's weapon sliced into the demon's arm. Soft like butter. She severed it. It did not re-attach.

    Anath was vulnerable.

    "It hurts."

The otherworldly monster roared out in anger, her face held high to the sky. She wasn't done. She wasn't finished. She would kill them all. Kill them all. Kill them all. Kill them all.

    "IthurtsithurtsithurtsithurtsithurtsithurtsITHURTS"

Comet's arrow, conveniently, hit Anath's other eye, making her otherworldly distorted scream just that much angrier. In a rush, the to madness driven beast went on all fours and rushed towards the other side of the battlefield. Towards Cain, Aalam, and Luna. She. Would. Kill. Them. All.

A protective barrier formed around Anath as the magical machine-gun fire started its assault. Magic woven to defend against magic, Luna's magical arrows were just mere pebbles as the Envoy of Chaos kept charging. With each step, one step closer to the demon's own victory.

    "AHAHAHAHAAHAHA!"

But then, it happened. It was quick. It was sudden. It was fast. The moment Aalam's projectile made to kill dragons, penetrated Anath's barrier, pierced her chest, was the moment her barrier weakened.

    Only for a moment.
But a moment was all Luna needed.

    "AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

It was quick. It was sudden. It was fast. But it wasn't painless. As magical projectile upon projectile chipped away on Anath's very being, Luna did not stop until there was nothing left at all. And as the echo of her painful screams dwindled into the distance, the survivors knew. They knew they had own.

    -257/2000 Anath HP

    VICTORY!
They did it! They truly did it! All left was to now deal with Gluttony. The child sat on her buttocks and cried like a baby. Complaining about never getting any food or something. Having done the right call of judgment, and ignoring her, ending the harmless monster's suffering wouldn't be a hassle?

They also had to revive the by now bled out Comet and Ezra. Two immortal corpses. Hopefully, neither of them would experience the joy of UI lock!

And, actually, how long would it take until this dumb mist was completely gone? Over the course of the battle, it had gone so intense one could think they were in a silent hill movie! Even the black sun rays weren't shining through.

    Life Surge activated.
    +510 HP gained.

    253/2000 Anath HP

    "Ha..."

The sound of flesh being pierced. Cain could feel the pain. His heart beat fast. Very fast. He could clearly see how fast his heart was beating!

    "Ha...HAHAHAHA!"

    Anath was still here.

Standing on a single leg, most of her torso missing, half her face gone, her arm piercing right through the Flagbearer of Miracles, her hand holding Cain's heart like a trophy up into his face.

    Anath decleared her presence.

"I REJECT THIS REALITY! THIS OUTCOME! GLUTTONY! DO IT!"

And with these words, the oh-so harmless Gluttony that the party ignored for their own convenience sprung into action. She could eat reality itself. So a bit of conceptual anime shenanigans should be totally doable too. Right?

Something like chewing on the Seal that separated Anath from her true form, or power.

Promptly opening her mouth, Gluttony aimed her next attack towards Anath and Cain. The moment her mouth closed, her teeth met, everything started to crumble.

    Reality shattered.
    Laws started to bend.
    Their visions started to distort.
Cracks appeared on the very fabric of existence.

    The shattering of a mirror.
Shards in the shape of Applesun.
The second coming of the Apocalypse.
No longer did the group find themselves amidst the same ruins.

A black Sun. A burning landscape. A town in ruins. Vague shades, resembling starved down humans, peeked from their crooks and crannies with slight curiosity. Yet, their eyes had long lost the light of hope.

Anath herself. Itself. Had taken on a new form. A form beyond human description. It resembled everyone and everything one may have ever seen or known, and yet nothing familiar at all. It was pure instinct telling those present that this was indeed, Anath.

It was still behind Cain, who now had a small black hole in place of an actual wound, yet wasn't. The Envoy of Chaos was everywhere, yet nowhere. Everything, yet nothing.

    "Welcome ...."

Anath's voice resounded and, much like anything else, resembled people that they could recall yet so otherworldly, too.

    Another crack.
    Another shard.
    Another splinter.

    "Urgh... AAAAAHHHH...."

    Anath was in pain.
This was not meant to be.
Reality rejected the Envoy of Chaos.

    "NNOOOOOO.... you... STAY HERE!"

They could feel it. Something weighing down on them. Something draining their very soul. Something that amplified their deepest feelings of fear.

    Something was coming.

But not all was lost. They had to keep struggling. To keep fighting. For the laws of reality itself were on their side. Not all was lost, for both Comet and Ezra were on their side once more, too. Much like Cain, they too had these holes, albeit much bigger.

In this realm, where their masteries meant nothing. Would they ultimately fall or struggle for a brighter future?

Cycle 8 - in which reality was rend and the world was banished.

  5. Ba dump.

Ba dump. Ba dump. Ba dump.

    Badumpbadumpbadumpbadumpbadumpbadumpbadump

It hurt. Hurt enough to pull him out of his fantasies, his delusions, his grandeur and his glory. He could feel it now, tighter than ever before, the phantasmal noose that branded his throat, sealing his words even as he desperately tried to claw out those last words.

    Kill Gluttony.

But his heart was in the Envoy’s grasp, long tubes still connecting it to the rest of his body as his symphony dissolved around him. This was a mortal wound, enough to stop even an immortal’s rampage. And it hurt, hurt, hurt, a physical agony that could not be compared to pulverized legs, scorching flames, soul-rending spirit. His stomach did flips, his lungs rasped empty, his mind kept on blinking in and out, as if in a fever dream. His legs quaked, warm wetness dripping down as he lost control of his bowels.

And yet, he did not collapse.

    Did not falter.

Clenched his teeth, ignored the agony and humiliation, and grasped on, with the ferocity of a dead man no longer beholden to matters of life or death.

    Flagbearer. Slaughterer. Daughter.

It pounded in his skull like a war beat as his two hands grasped upon the Envoy’s bloodied wrist, his eyes still smouldering, smouldering with those inhuman embers. The eyes of a savage, violence and tenacity swirling in an eternal struggle against the world itself. And even as reality broke, even as everything was reconstructed, Cain did not fall.

He held on, smiling through bloodied teeth, and stared into the heart of subnatural darkness.

    What was he here for?

This was what he was here for.

    “I…REFUSE!”

To herald the beginning of the counterattack, to bring light upon this wretched, dejected world.

With bloodied hands, he tore his heart out of Anath’s hand, sanguine droplets baptizing him as he raised it skywards. Offer it, offer it, offer it! And if the heart isn’t enough, then…

“Give me love, give me light, GIVE ME LIFE!”

Azure converged upon the darkest reality, as ten thousand spirits burst out from the ground, a phantasmal orchestra that raised their voices in a glorious battle cry. A Goddess of Machinery, a Goddess of the Sword, a Goddess of Thorns and Light, a Goddess of Golden Ideals, a Goddess of Small Miracles. Higher and higher, fireworks bursting into cerulean brilliance to overlay the cursed surreality that would beat them back over and over again.

A warrior fought evil, but a muse brought hope. Even as the Envoy of Chaos’s realm rejected it, his Symphony, his history, rang clear as a clarion call, crescendoing to the moon and the stars. Dread, despair, fear did not befit a finale. For something like this, only the most beautiful stages could be presented.

“I declareth myself Cain, Flagbearer of Miracles, Blessed by Humanity and Divinity Alike, and offer myself wholly! This fight is not lost! This reality is not lost! Chase back the darkness, save every lost soul, and cement your status as heroes! We are immortals that understand mortality, legends that know weakness! And even shackled with regrets, obligations, fears, afflictions, we still stand!”

This voice was not just for his allies, not just for himself. This was for all those down-trodden individuals who had forgotten what it was to dream.

“Look upwards and remember again! What you must do to carve out a happy ending! Rise and FIGHT! Against Chaos, against Fear, against Death!”

And, bloodied as he was, Cain’s index finger extended, towards the sky.

“Welcome to the finale, the Astrasphere!”

The sky that was no longer consumed by a Black Sun.

The sky that was drowning in a million stars, sparkling like the frozen tears of a forgotten God.

One by one, those stars fell, lines of transient light, each of them carrying a dream, a hope, a wish.

Each of them a piece of a miracle.

The Flagbearer smiled, eyes locking onto the omnipresent Anath.
    Ursa. Eldhi. Magi. Seigi. Youn.

  6. It was supposed to be fun.

A nice little afternoon jaunt into the woods to deal with some cultists. A way for the girls to bond with one another. Something to make Ezra and Luna hate her a little less. Disrupt a ritual, murk some robes, maybe slaughter a devil or two. Back to Honeyhome in time for dinner and drinks.

It was supposed to be fun.

Now, one of them was dead, and it was all her fault.

The plagueslinger didn't care about all the shit happening around her. Reality torn asunder, Anath's true form revealed, Cain getting his heart ripped out of his chest yet inexplicably not dying--none of it mattered.

They were so close--so fucking CLOSE--and in her moment of selfishness, Madison chose to heal herself. And as she was preparing a second spell to patch Ezra's wounds, the Death Knight succumbed to them.

The buzzing in Maddy's ears drowned out the chaos around her as reality itself continued to warp and tear. She couldn't hear her own terrified screams, nor the bard's words as he rebuked the demoness that threatened to consume them all. All she could focus on was the body of Ezra, lying on the ashen earth, her armor covered in blood and pitch-black holes.

She let the knight down. She failed Ezra.

No no no no no no

Madison knelt down, her fingers shaking as she fumbled around for her deck of cards. Giving them a quick in-hand shuffle to charged them with mana, she nearly dropped the deck a couple times. Her movements were erratic and sloppy as she was further consumed with guilt over the woman's death.

no no no oh gods no no no no nonononononoohgodsplease

One by one, she began flipping cards from the top of the deck. Three of Clubs. Nine of Hearts. Jack of Spades. Something, anything to try and help her friend as she grew colder with each passing second.

Eight of Spades. Three of Hearts.

This always happened whenever Madison made friends, wasn't it? Desperate for their attention and appreciation, the sense of worth they gave her... She'd always end up pushing them away, or getting them hurt.

Queen of Spades. Three of Diamonds. Queen of Clubs.

The assembled full house began to glow, thrumming with an emerald energy that should not have existed where they were.

"Come on come on come on," she hissed through teeth that would soon crack from the strain of he clenched jaw. Her blue eyes scanned every inch of Ezra, looking for a sign of life. She didn't dare breathe, she didn't dare move. Nothing to interrupt the spell she cast.

The ping came ten seconds later, crimson letters in the corner of her vision.

    REVIVE FAILED
Madison didn't react at first. She remained perfectly still, staring at the message that floated before her, taunting her. Her brain processing it, but still refusing to believe it. The message blinked once and reappeared.

    REVIVE FAILED

    AND IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT

WAY TO GO, YOU FUCKED UP AGAIN LOL
And to think, this was supposed to be for fun.

Fresh streams of hot tears trickled down her cheeks. A primal, broken cry filled the air, almost as powerful as Anath's own. The glow of her mana disappeared from the cards as the witch threw herself on top of Ezra's body, wrapping her hands around her and lifting her into her lap, squeezing her tightly.

I'm so sorry. The words were on her lips, but she couldn't find the energy to whisper them. I'm so sorry, Ezra.

Light trickled out from the druidess's fingertips. Green light, soft at first, that seemed to diffuse into the death knight's body. Pure, unaltered mana, untouched by a focus and fueled by raw emotion. A last, desperate attempt to save a life when she should've been the one to perish.

    Double revive on Ezra
    3 + 13 = 26 (FAILURE)
    13 + 33 = 46 (SUCCESS)

  7. The floor was cold.

Ezra could feel the chill through her armor as she lay there, spread eagle with her eyes pinched closed and her lower lip snug between her teeth. There were flashing red lights behind her eyelids and this warning beep in her ear that wouldn’t shut up. She knew what it was saying because she could hear it, the echoing thump of her heart and the beat increased tenfold. She could hear the blood rushing through her veins, her temples throbbing with an upcoming headache, the back of her throat parched from anxiety and nerves combined.

Still, she lay there. She didn’t dare look. The sickly-sweet smell of flowers was already clogging her nose and she knew, instinctually, that she was no longer on the battlefield. There was no grass here, no ominous crimson fog that hovered and swirled around them. Here, there were priests and priestesses and she Ezra could hear their faint chanting in the distance. She swallowed the stone in her throat, nearly choking on it as her fingers curled into fists. She didn’t dare move. She didn’t want to be here, didn’t want to see the temple nor the Woman Who Waits, the ivory hood covering her features so that only that Cheshire grin peeked through.

She knew the floor was marble. A toffee color with streaks of ivory lighting that broke it up into something artistic. She knew there were four rooms on their floor and two staircases, one going up and one going down. She knew that the windows were blacked out, that the candles couldn’t be put out, and there was no escaping through the front door. There was only the Woman, standing at the podium with her gloved hands crossed before her, waiting for you to kneel and pay homage before she sent you back with her dark chuckle in your ears.

    Ezra wasn’t going to move.

“Useless,” the whisper said. The Death Knight knew who it was, but she kept still, like prey caught in the headlights of a quickly moving vehicle. Frozen with fear. Maybe this fucking game would eject her before she had a heart attack. If the flashing lights, ringing, and buzzing in her ears were to tell her anything, it would be soon.

    “You have to move eventually.”

No, she didn’t and no she wouldn’t.

“Humph. Well. It seems someone has come for you after all. No worries, dear Knight. You will soon stay here…forever.”

Shock forced Ezra to open her eyes, the silver lights peeking over Madison’s shoulder as she gazed off into the endless abyss. The Blight Druid was holding her and sobbing and rocking back and forth. Ezra knew she had died, had expected it when she dragged her broken, bloody body to stand and forced it to charge the child demon. But, she hadn’t expected…this.

@Madison Freebird , she croaked, her voice reminiscent of sand-paper rubbing against a stone. Is she dead? Where’s Luna? What the fuck is going on?
