Personality
Aisling is nothing if not a creature of habit, sticking to beliefs and habits she's maintained for years. Maybe it's just her being old (and believe her, she knows that she's old), but if those old habits
work then why go through the effort to change them? Being nice to people never stops paying off, and protecting your anonymity is still important, though that's gotten harder in recent years. It's hard for her not to reveal that she came from an older, different sort of online world - if her love for some veritably ancient memes doesn't expose her, her clearly outdated interests and knowledge will.
Not that she cares what people think of that. She's just here to have a good time, and maybe make some friends along the way. And, well, if she doesn't, then she's never had a problem going solo in MMOs before.
...at least, she tells herself that, but she does crave companionship as much as the next person. She's just never been great at saying so, maintaining a level of distance that makes her seem aloof. It's not as if she's trying to build a wall around herself - she just doesn't know how else to be. It's part of why Aisling clings to online games so much - it's much easier to run away from yourself when no one else knows you, or to pretend that you're braver and stronger than you really are.
Positive: Clever, Trustworthy, Steadfast, Caring, Determined
Negative: Anxious, Irritable, Suspicious, Inexpressive, Stubborn
Biography
The life of Aisling Lane is one without much excitement to it - she grew up in a stable, lower middle class family, went through school without standing out or getting into trouble, and worked temp jobs for a while before landing a longer term job as a secretary. She's never been one for drawing attention to herself, at least in the real world.
Online, on the other hand... that was another story.
One of the first things Aisling did on getting her first paying job was to start a subscription to an MMO, one that a friend of hers had talked up for... well, a very long time. It quickly became her only game of choice, as well as her primary source of social interaction. Rather miraculously managing to grab the username "Ash", she muddled her way through the game, building a reputation as a consistent and somewhat skilled player. She had a guild, she had friends, she avoided having a lot of enemies (some were, unfortunately, inevitable), and it provided a nice bit of escapism in the midst of an otherwise mediocre life.
And then, after years of a dwindling population, growing server instability, and the advent of VR gaming, the game finally shut down, with a "Thank you for playing" message and a polite suggestion that the remaining players try some other games by that company.
To her credit, Aisling tried those games. She tried other games. She even accepted her room-mate's gift of their old VR headset so she could try out games that needed them. None of them managed to click for Aisling, though - she had too many memories of her old game, and she wasn't sure if she could ever replace that game in her heart. Perhaps it was a sign, she thought, that it was time for her to move on and do something more... adult, or something.
Then she got an invite to Terrasphere.
Aisling didn't jump on it right away, of course. She'd heard about this game, about how it was illegal and dangerous and very certainly not the sort of thing she should be getting into. She read about it - the rumors, the news stories, the risks... definitely wasn't for her. The damn email probably had a virus or something, or it was a prank from a friend or coworker. She should just delete it, pretend she'd never gotten it, and move on with her life.
...
Well, it wouldn't hurt to just give it a try, right?
