Arnold Stoutheart Race: Dwarf Age: 67 Sex: Male Sexuality: Straight Relationship: Widower (not looking to remarry) Height: 4’8” Build: Short, stout, muscular – typical dwarven build Personality What Arnold lacks in size, he makes up for in confidence. Even for a dwarf, he never fails to believe that he can get the job done, given the right tools. And if he’s proven wrong, he’s always the first to suggest having another crack at it, usually with a much bigger hammer. It’s not just himself that he’s confident in, though. Unless he’s given good reason to believe somebody is truly, utterly incompetent, he’ll encourage them until his dying breath. There are also few more fearless than Arnold. There are few things that can truly make him feel anything more than a slight need to hesitate. He is the kind that would laugh in the face of those who would tell him that he is embarking on a suicide mission, and is not afraid to fight foes twice as large as him. With his bravery comes recklessness, however. It’s not unheard of for him to just charge into battle, whether a plan has been made or not, swinging his weapon at anything that he thinks is an enemy. It may be that it is just his nature, but those close to him say that he’s actively seeking death. Arnold himself has kept his quiet on the matter. Positive: Confident, courageous Negative: Reckless, impulsive Biography Though uneventful, his early life was pleasant enough. Born the son of a soldier and a blacksmith, weaponry and fighting were in Arnold’s blood from the day that he was born. Not that he ever resented it. The forge and the arena were his homes away from home, the smith’s hammer and the war hammer as comfortable in his hand as a pen was in a poet’s. However, as much as he loved his home, the fact of the matter was that there wasn’t any profit in staying where he had been born. His ticket out of the place arrived in the form of an errant band of misfits, each a different race, each skilled in a different discipline. After he proved himself (by besting two of them in a drinking contest, one immediately after the other), they took him with them to roam the land and seek adventure. And treasure, of course. Their travels took them to many, many lands. Volcanic regions where the ground threatened to open up beneath them and swallow them whole, port cities where towering tentacle monsters were a weekly occurrence, sprawling deserts and vast tundras… Plus, there was the added bonus of there being immense amounts of treasure that no other soul had managed to come across. Not enough to set any of them for life, but what they found was certainly not an amount to scoff at. During this time, the group found themselves tasked with protecting a noble’s young daughter from a group of bandits. A surprised attack had left most of them incapacitated, with only Arnold and some guards the noble had sent with them left standing. With the guards busy fending off the bandits, Arnold found himself face-to-face with one of their war beasts. Outnumbered and out of breath, he found himself threatening them, somehow coming to the conclusion that they would see it as him trying to assert his dominance. That was when he discovered that he had magic. The beasts were kept in place by his spell, helping to turn the tide of battle – and many battles since. Arnold was getting on in years, however, and with the members of his team all having to part ways for one reason or another, he felt that he was only slowing down the younger, spryer adventurers that they had picked up along the way. So, he packed up what treasure his team would let him take, and headed back home to make a living as a blacksmith. A quiet life, to be sure, but he’d figured that he’d seen, done, and looted enough to last a lifetime. For twenty years, he remained in that small town, making a respectable living as a skilled smith. He married his childhood sweetheart, and not long after, they had a child together. Even the ever-present Dwarven greed could not drive him to leave the life he’d settled himself into. A plague, however, was. Though it hadn’t reached the town where he was living, Arnold knew that it would reach them before year’s end without some sort of cure. As quick as he could, he joined the search for the ingredients needed to combat it. Fortunately, the alchemists and officials heading up the operation were competent enough to identify the cure swiftly, and a few months later, the plague was no more. Arnold, proud of his part in the elimination of the disease, returned home – but he was anything but triumphant. Both his wife and his child had been killed by the disease. Those that had been tending to them had tried to comfort him, saying that they passed peacefully, but he knew what the disease did to people. He knew that their deaths had been slow and agonising, their bodies breaking down and letting them die in excruciating pain that no potion could quell. The dwarf, once the very image of pride and bravado, became nothing short of an empty shell. In recent years, he seems to have experienced something of a return to form. While his glory days are far behind him, he has been working under the philosophy that he doesn’t want to just “lay down and die.” Though he misses his family and would give anything to bring them back, he feels that just letting himself waste away would be like spitting on their graves, and now seeks adventure. And, if some rumours are to be believed, death at the hands of a worthy adversary.
