Preface
Magic is not common in the world of Terrasphere; the majority of people do not have access to it. Magic comes from a variety of different sources. Below are the 4 most common ones.
- Natural These people are born with latent magical power and can often express magic naturally. Rather than learning magic, they feel it.
- Academic These people are born with little to no magic and have to study it extensively to be able to use magic. Spellcasting often requires a large amount of memorization and practice.
- Faithful These people receive magic from their patron or matron gods. Instead of reciting incantation, they offer prayers. These people still expend their energy to cast spells, however.
- Enabled These people have little to no magic and can only cast spells because something else is enabling them to do so. These may be different beings or a magical item. These types are incredibly rare, however.
Spellcasting
Spellcasting requires an incantation specific to the spell be recited or written in the air. Powerful spells take longer to channel and consume more energy. Injury or other distraction may interrupt spellcasting. There are two methods to cast spells in TS.
- Assist Mode In this mode, the user can simply swipe their hand in any direction to bring up a panel with available spells. Tap on a spell and they will automatically begin to recite. Once a spell is completed, the game will also assist the user with aiming to reduce the chance of missing.
- Free Mode In this mode, the user must memorize the incantation of their spell and pronounce every word correctly or the spell will not cast. Worst, the wrong spell may go off. Once the spell is completed, the user will have to aim using their own skills. This mode allows one to quickly cancel their spell, switch to another one, or weave it into other attacks seamlessly rather than having to open your UI and scroll through the spell list.
Miscellaneous
Energy - Spellcasting consumes a great deal of energy (NPCs call it mana). Given that the energy to cast spell is the same as stamina, spellcasters should best avoid strenuous physical activity while they are using magic.
Mind Down - A condition that triggers when a user's energy level hit zero, they will fall unconscious until energy recovers (if energy is fully depleted, it will take longer to recover naturally). Given this, physical fighters who use magic at the same time should carefully manage their energy.
Magical Instruments
If you have a standard magic mastery, you are able to use any of the magical instruments in the table below. Although they all differ in theme and function, these tools all make your spellcasting more efficient. The various effects described are mostly for roleplay, however.
Rod | (One-handed) Rod-like items such as wand, branch, etc. Rods often contain "Cantrips," which are weak spells that cost little energy to use. |
Focus | (One-handed) Embellished items such as chakram, idol, skull, ceremonial dagger, effigy, icon, etc. As its name suggest, focus improves the user's concentration during spellcasting. |
Spell Ring | (One-handed) These rings are worn on the dominant hand, which allows the user to write the spells instead of reciting the incantation. The written spell will appear as glowing words that float in thin air before the spell is cast. |
Rune Stone | (One-handed) These are made with a variety of stone or cystal. The rune stone will float alongside the user, helping them cast spells. Rune stones allow the user to insribe runes onto surfaces, which can be activated from a distance. |
Charms | (One-handed) A set of three flat-surface magic papers float along with you. Since charms are expendable, they improve the user's energy management./td> |
Grimoire | (One or two-handed) These spellbooks range from small and light to large and heavy. The advantage of wielding a grimoire comes from the fact that they contain a large number of spells, which improves the user's spellcasting speed. |
Staff | (Two-handed) Long and slender scepters that are often full of ornaments or magical energy. These staff are too flimsy to be used for physical combat. (Flavor) Staff often empowers spell that take a long time to cast since it acts as an energy absorber, drawing in mana from its surroundings. |
Tarot Cards | (Two-handed) To cast spells with tarot cards, you must shuffle the deck and pull these cards out and arrange them in the air (they float) in a particular pattern before the spell materializes. Optionally, you may also pull out a card to cast a random spell, this is the fastest way to cast a spell. Think Astrologian from FFXIV. |
Harmonic Instruments
Only those with Harmonic Magic may use these magical instruments.
Musical Instruments | (Two-handed) These encompass all medieval style of musical instruments such as lyre, harp, viol, lute, gittern, bagpipe, flute, tabor, timbrel, tambourine. No modern musical instruments. |
Flow Apparatus | (One-handed) These embellished items aid in dancing or other display of flow. |
Progression
Beginner | You have about 1 or 2 useful spells that you struggle to control. |
Novice | Your insignificant spell now actually hurt a little. You can kind of levitate things and cast other utility spells that all magic pratitioners are supposed to know. |
Trained | You have a set of spells that you use regularly and can use them effectively, although, your energy efficiency isn't quite up to par. |
Proficient | You are starting to get the whole concept of magic now and can cast spells competently. You are now starting to explore the more complicated spells. |
Adept | Complicated spells aren't so bad for you now. You can cast some of the big spells and continue to power up your previously simple set of spells. |
Expert | You are now a very capable spellcaster who can use both simple and complex spells without a problem. You have learned to manage your energy effectively, making it easier and less costly to cast smaller spells. |
Mastered | You have mastered your craft and can now cast two different spells simultaneously without exploding. |
