Progression

Beginner You can sense attacks, but doesn't have the skill to parry them.
Novice Your parrying is slow, allowing quite a bit of damage to go through. Going to have to work on that.
Trained You can fend off attacks and trading a few blows, keeping yourself safe.
Proficient You can reliably keep yourself safe with proper guard techniques and is slowly practicing more complex skills.
Adept Guarding yourself is a cakewalk now. You are starting to grasp the more difficult techniques as well and take advantage of it in combat.
Expert You can use many of the advanced defense techniques now, making you a formidable fighter.
Mastered Your enemy should be extremely wary of you as they fight or duel you since you can defend against attacks that come your way and perform ripostes that will leave them devastated. Your visual perception is incredible at this point, you understand combat at a much deeper level because of it.
